I'm seriously surprised the Internet is freaking out... no wait, not surprised at all. They should have done this from day 1 and it's always been something you shouldn't have been doing and now they choose to enforce it. Business works because people pay them money. Fascinating I know. So if you share your password with 10 other people, that's potentially at least some of those people who wouldn't pay Netflix and get it for free.

Simple. Not even worth a story.
I'll just leave this right here...simple.

Oh for sure. If a customer no longer feels they are getting the proper value for their money, by all means cancel. I just don't get why Netflix is demonized.
Netflix condoned it and even semi-encouraged for so long (even as other services stopped allowing it) that it’s become an expectation that this is part of using Netflix for a lot of people. Not saying Netflix is wrong to do this but loosing some goodwill is unavoidable when they actually start enforcing this rule.

It’s not that I think “ermagerd I deserve to share my account with the world if I want!” but moreso that I already found the value offered from Netflix lacking, and this makes it even less appealing.

I share an account with my family members, all of whom live in different households. None of us particularly love Netflix- we each use it once in a blue moon when we can’t find anything else to watch. Collectively, it makes sense to split a single membership as each of us will get some occasional use out of it.

But if each of us has to essentially pay a separate membership fee? What little value it had to us is now gone. There’s not a chance in hell we’re paying for 5 memberships for something we all use a couple of times a month.

We didn’t subscribe to Netflix because we LOVED their content. We did so because it was convenient and cheap once we shared the cost.

It’s just odd that Netflix is choosing to do this *now* when the streaming wars appear to be at their most competitive… and most expensive.

Can someone give me their Costco login?

Can I also have your Xbox Live info? I don’t want to pay for that either.

Can I share your car insurance?
Can't comment on Xbox Live as I don't use that service, but....

(1) Costco allows up to 2 people to be card members, a primary member and someone else who lives at the same address as the primary member... such as your child who may be momentarily away at college. Netflix won't allow this and wants to charge you extra for it.

(2) Car insurance has always only covered one person, so I don't even know how this is comparable to a Netflix account that allows for multiple simultaneous streams. Now, if you meant homeowners insurance, yes, homeowners insurance will cover your child who is away at college.

Again, Netflix won't allow my away-at-college child to use our Netflix account because Netflix's definition of a household does not refer to the people but rather the "collection of devices."

"A Netflix Household is a collection of the devices connected to the internet at the main place you watch Netflix."

Yes, I agree Apple’s way is better.

Netflix should have implemented a sub account system like Apple.
Sub accounts on Netflix would be way less impactful than family sharing. Apple ties up all sorts of things in Apple ID's that discourage adding randoms to your family. It would be like Spotify which gets shared heavily vs Apple Music.

It's interesting how Apple quietly shut down account sharing at launch without any backlash just by making it a tougher choice.

This is the wrong approach. I'm much happier terminating my Netflix account subscription.
Netflix has gotten so greedy. It's pretty sad.
Netflix has gotten greedy? 🤣

If you think Netflix is bad, let me tell you about this company that charges $999 for a monitor stand, $699 for wheels, $19 for a piece of cloth, $200 to upgrade computer memory from their lousy 8GB to 16GB,....

Youtube Premium is a great product and Youtube is not forcing sh*t like this.

Netflix is officially cracking down on password sharing in the United States and the United Kingdom, more than a year after it first announced the move.

Netflix-Smaller-2.jpg

Netflix explained on its U.S. and U.K. websites how viewers who shared their account password to people outside their household would be affected, and what the additional costs would be if they still wanted to let out-of-household users access their account.

Going forward, account holders on the Netflix Standard plan will have the option to add one person outside of their household, but they will have to pay an extra $7.99 a month (or £4.99 in the U.K.) for the privilege. Account holders on the Netflix Premium with 4K package can add up to two extra members, but they will still cost $7.99 each.

As for account holders on the Basic or Standard with adverts plans, they don't have any option to add out-of-household members at all.

Extra members will be given their own account and password, but their membership is paid for by the person who invited them to share their Netflix account. Alternatively, they can use a new "transfer profile" feature to prompt extra users to make their own accounts that they pay for.

Netflix said subscribers living in the same household would still be able to access their account when traveling or on the go, but the streaming company said it had begun sending emails about the "paid sharing" plan to out-of-household users on Tuesday, explaining what their options are.

Netflix has been testing the new sharing restrictions in Canada, New Zealand, Spain, and Portugal since the beginning of the year, and said in April that it was "pleased with the results." In Canada, for example, paid sharing resulted in a larger Netflix membership base and an acceleration in revenue growth, which has given Netflix the confidence to expand it to the United States and elsewhere.

Netflix claimed last year that more than 100 million households are sharing accounts, which is impacting its ability to "invest in and improve Netflix" for paying members.

Netflix's 4k plan is way too expensive, that's why they only get approx. 4 months subscription out of me annually, if it was £10, it would probably be on the whole year round.
With this, they're taking the pee, a streaming service you pay for should be available everywhere !

Sure but why would it matter if it’s actually family vs strangers as long as they are all living apart? It’s not like NF will save on bandwidth in either case.

Why go through all the effort of developing profiles, if you're just going to crackdown on the only method needed to make it work?

Maybe you were not around "Day 1" when they actually said, "Love is sharing your passoword"

Yes. Hense my saying, "they SHOULD have", I forgot about that.

But AGAIN they changed their mind. Deal with it or leave. Just stop complaining that people freeloading, mooching days are over and a business actually wants to make money.

This is all so very sad.

Damnit Canada! First you let Rogers and Bell give you the thumbscrews and now this? Why?
Canadians are obedient citizens. They will NEVER protest, question or revolt. Need proof? Look how insanely expensive housing is in Canada and how much people are making per year. Yet nobody seems to care that the government isn't doing anything.

Why are you so upset? LOL

People will find ways to freeload as always.
How am I upset? Why is that the go-to for people having zero ground in an argument? Strange.

Anyway, sure yes, freeloaders, etc will always try to find a way and it's 100% within Netflix's rights to do everything to stop them.

People who think they should be able to create an account and share it for free with half a dozen other people are just crazy. There is no other service on the planet that allows you to sign up for something then share it for free with other people.
Actually, there is. American Express allows you to add additional card members (such as my away-at-college child) so you can share your account with them for free.

Netflix doesn't allow this.
