how about you give me a lower tier plan that doesn’t include all the netflix originals...?

...which will be a howling wasteland once all of the third-party rights holders have "done a Disney", pulled their content and started their own streaming services.

I'm actually very happy with what I'm getting from Netflix: I'm in the UK, so getting things like Star Trek: Discovery, The Expanse is a pretty good deal, along with things that UK broadcasters let go, like Black Mirror and Orphan Black* - far better value than Virgin cable or Murdochvision even if you have to buy the occasional big-ticket show.

If you’re going to raise the price, renew Sense8.

...or think of a less indulgently expensive way of making it that doesn't involve continually flying the entire cast around the world so that they can enjoy a group hug (or a bit more) in five different countries in every episode. I confess to having lost interest about halfway into season 2 - its really great to have something written for a > 5 minute attention span, but given the freedom, creatives tend to go to the opposite extreme. Knowing that its going to be wrapped up in a "special" next year actually makes it more likely that I'll finish watching S2 sometime. Its a pity they didn't plan for a 2-season arc in the first place (given the likelihood of such an expensive concept getting cancelled) - there are always spin-offs. (Babylon 5 hit its peak when JMS had to cram the last two seasons of plot into one).

Looking at the new crop of shows, there must be some sort of middle ground between trying to squash a novel's worth of material into a 2 hour movie and spinning it out to 10 hours.

(*if you like Sense8 you might like Orphan Black)

It’s a freaking dollar. A month. 12 per year. 3 cents a day. I can literally find that in my cup holder in my car. Or you could maybe cut out 2 coffee runs....a year, for you know, hours and hours of entertainment. Btw, you’re on a Apple forum complaining about one dollar a month.

I don't think cord cutting is just about money. If I want to watch a certain movie, I can just go to one of the services and most likely stream it. Same with shows.

Can Comcast do that? Can I decide to watch a show when I want to and not care about when THEY decide I want to watch it?

Yeah, we had that with Tivo 15 years ago and Tivo still exists and does a great job. not only that, you can skip commercials. Hulu and DirectTV now have commercials (crappy ones at that).

Just got T-Mobile to pay for my Netflix. I upgraded to the higher quality tier for $2/month, so now $3/month? Maybe T-Mobile will kick in the extra $1.

No, no, Tivo is a DVR. That means I have to actively know what shows I want to watch and tell it to record those. That's not the same.

Since I watched Defenders, I haven't logged on since. I felt $9.99 was a waste of money. $10.99 even more so. Time to cancel them again.

T-Mobile help on twitter said they will still cover the cost of the standard plan. I would assume that means the credit will be $1 higher if you upgraded your plan. (assuming can be dangerous though )

Not the end of the world but I do echo the feelings of their movie collections getting worse and worse every year. For example at one point they had all the star trek movies and james bond movies. Those days are over. More and more B-movies now. The only thing keeping me from canceling is all the TV shows and documentaries they offer.

I am not bothered by this increase. It happens. Netflix is still my first choice for what I want to watch. I have Hulu and Amazon and they are always the afterthought. Content is not as extensive for what I want. It's a small increase and worth it. Some of that original content is really entertaining. Not all, but some.

I'm always amazed at how little money can make people freak out.

$2.99 for a useful app
$1 per month additional for Netflix
$0.05 in gas price increase

Yeah, price increases suck, but most of these things are rounding errors for most people in 1st world countries.

Contrary to economists hired by governments, people don't like inflation.

LULz at you thinking T-Mobile pays for it. They roll it in to the cost of your service. It's not like they're a charity organization handing out money for free. If they give you something, they have to extract that value elsewhere. As a publicly traded company they're required by law to do so. They just word it nice and you think you're getting something free.

On the one hand, increasing prices for content many of us don’t care about (original content and that budget) sucks.

On the other, annual or bi annual increases that are small makes sense, as costs increase and inflation.

Depends on your plan. The cost of my plan didn't change and they now pay for my netflix as well, so...

I agree but a lot of people have anywhere between 5 to 10 things that require a monthly fee. As all of those go up a few pennies or a few dollars each it starts to add up and people start cutting things that aren't essential. Netflix is not essential to most people.

It all adds up and frankly it gets pretty annoying when they continue going up and up and up. At some point you have to decide to throw in the towel or not.

It looks like if you purchased netflix from your apple account a while back your basically grandfathered for life. 7.99 cant complain

Netflix, $13.99
Hulu, $7.99
DirecTVNow, $35
YouTube Red, $9.99
Amazon, $8.25
= $75 a month

Yeah, take that Comcast. Cord cutting is WAY cheaper than having just one bill with 250 channels.

Why would anyone pay for YouTube Red - still not sure.

For me, it's Netflix + HBO + Amazon = ~$35/month, plus free 2-day shipping on Amazon.

Also, the "one bill" counts against Comcast. Comcast always screwed with my "one bill" and added fees without asking and required endless calls to customer support, that would never reverse the charge but rather apply a credit to some future bill. I wasn't a fan of lending Comcast $10 here and there at 0% interest.

None of Netflix or HBO or Amazon bill me - they just charge my credit card the right amount with any issue.

If 1$ a month is enough excuse to pirate, you were just looking for an excuse.

I would say it's not the dollar, but the product itself.

I just can speak for the german Netflix (they raise prices here too), and now it's the second time they raise the price, but since the start of Netflix here their catalogue was shortened a lot and most new tv shows are not full seasons but one episode per week.

Means they want more and more money for less and less product.

I understand raising a price when the product stays the same or gets better. But Netflix only got worse.

What first was the reason to get Netflix is all gone.
