Still think it’s a flop?

Apple's profits from gaming outweighed those of major game companies, according to a report, with Apple earning more from App Store games in its 2019 fiscal year than Nintendo, Microsoft, Activision Blizzard, and Sony combined.

So, did you know that there's people with way too much money that spend in the area of $1000 PER WEEK on Clash of Clans? A number that EA saw, salivated over, and then tasked someone I know dearly as their own target for when they resurrected Dungeon Keeper?

Maybe that insanity is the reason why Apple makes so much money on games... micro-transactions. And why Epic was so willing to take 20% off their micro-transaction costs in order to not pay 30%.

The revenue isn't a vindication for the quality of Apple Arcade, in any sense. But... Apple Arcade is at least the bugs that fly above the swamp, not the green film growing on top of the water that freemium games are.

I like Apple Arcade now. I cancelled my two first attempts, but this third one, I think I am going to keep it. It’s getting better and better. And it can only be better, as it gets new games regularly and the list of games is starting to be pretty large and interesting.

I just checked this morning, Oddmar is coming. I never bought it because platformers have low replayability. That’s a perfect fit for the service.

I like the idea of having the same game available on different screen sizes. That’s a new experience. For example I can’t wait to try Kingdom Rush Frontier, one of my favourite, on big iMac screen.

Don’t know which is worse, Apple Arcade or Netflix game streaming.
Who do they think they are tying to impress?

Either way both companies don‘t know AAA gaming, don‘t employ the people who know to lead AAA gaming and will not appeal to those who enjoy AAA gaming.

Neither are going to attract PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and soon to be Steam Deck/handheld PC gamers away from their devices for questionable selection of games dependent on one having to keep paying subscriptions and reliable Internet connections for gaming requirments (mostly in the case of Netflix) let alone the biggest issue being ownership of games.

Games as a good >>>> Games as a service.

keep playing, NOT keep paying.

I seriously doubt AA is competing with Xbox and ps5. Doubt Netflix is either. PC Gaming is a competitor to Xbox and ps5.
You are correct as these (Apple and Netflix) are two very different groups.

It is why InApp is such a money maker and Apple pushes this model in the App Store.
and Apple doesn’t want the competition.

That Snoopy table tho’ LOL
I love the Snoopy table!! Certainly better than My Little Pony...lol.
For you maybe not but reality says otherwise. No AAA titles (only remade iOS junk titles), runs on subpar software & hardware etc. Then again it is only like $5 so you get what you pay for......
Yes, for me. Which is why I stated that.

Subpar software and hardware? Compared to what? An Xbox or PS5? Come on. You’re not going to have a PS5 in the palm of your hand anytime soon. Your hand would burn just holding it...lol. Not to mention the storage space issues you would have trying to pack the size of game console game files into the storage space of an iphone. Apples to oranges comparison. It’s not the same target market.

I mean really what are you expecting here? Be realistic.

If they close it, they will seriously lose a LOT of Mac users. And what are they going to do anyway, remove the useable file system?
Apple don’t have to change the file system. They can enforce any application, including CLI applications must sourced from the Mac AppStire.

If Apple tried this stunt, they certainly would lose a lot of users, like you say. Macs are popular for ( non Apple related ) software development for instance, which would make it very awkward with a walled garden Mac.

And I just recently got a notice that my subscription fee is going up again. Apparently "It's included in the price" means everybody will be paying for it, whether they want it or not.
I don't like paying more for stuff like the next person, but to believe that it's going up because of this addition of Android games is wishful thinking. They were going to up the rates anyways. They just need to throw extras on to "provide a better value". Leaving the games out to save $$ was never an option (and even if they did, the savings wouldn't be anything above trivial. A few cents really?).

Can I opt out and receive a bill reduction?
No more than you can get a dollar knocked off your sandwich if you have them hold the bread. Or telling the AYCE (all-you-can-eat) buffet to give you a discount since you won't be eating that much/won't touch their most expensive food items).

It would render it useless as a dev machine. Apple aren't going to wipe out their entire dev community, they have a huge number of sales from them. 30% for professional devs use macOS (https://insights.stackoverflow.com/survey/2021#most-popular-technologies-op-sys-prof).

There's also an endless list of anti-trust cases hanging over Apple, threatening to open up iOS and iPadOS to side loading. Which I suspect is what is holding back Apple's stock price at the moment. It should be going gang busters, but is crawling instead.

All that tells me that macOS isn't going to close up.

Ha! Netflix won’t survive. Good luck. Apple Arcade is way too good.

They are going after PS5, XBOX and other major gaming competitors.

Well, the same could be said of Apple TV+. Apple took a jab at Netflix, now Netflix seems to be doing the same. As Apple offers a subscription including every service (Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, Apple Music, and more), competitors may feel inclined to do the same to not lose their market share.

I don’t believe Apple will close up MacOS, but they could make it more awkward for non AppStore apps.

My point was, if they wanted to, they certainly could, even for CLI applications.

True, it is already a bit more awkward with the annoying "this app was downloaded off the internet, are you sure you want to open it", and so on.

Probably not, but maybe sandbox it further. Their goal is a fusion of iPadOS and macOS and I can see them switching to the "App system" for any apps in macOS, meaning no more "sideloading".

I’m still of the opinion that people will just not be interested in Macs and will have stopped purchasing them long before there would be an opportunity for any lockdown actions to be taken.

I like this trend of playing games without ADs and IAPs. It makes the game fair for everybody. Nowadays, almost every single game on mobile is P2W. Pay contents used to be limited to just cosmetics, that is not the case anymore.

I wasn't too excited about Apple Arcade when it first launched. But now I'm all in. Admittedly, most games there are recycled and boring but there are some gems in there too. The Lego Star Wars game is pretty fun for one. And I appreciate not having to gain an advantage by paying for units and upgrades.

Maybe, yes. Might be sooner than expected. Apple is locking down people in their eco system, in the past 18 months or so more than ever. macOS these days, at least for me, is reading/writing and Capture One and Final Cut, all the other things I have to do I had to move to Linux and Windows. I see many people in my line of work (scientific research) leaving macOS behind, which is sad.
