or chatting at any reasonable speed or, for that matter, posting on here without having to type it out on your iPhone. I love the iPhone keyboard and everything but let's just be honest here - it's not even close to typing with a real keyboard...

Perhaps I should clarify. I didn't mean I couldn't see the uses, I just meant that I couldn't see myself using them unless I was traveling for work or vacation.

I have 'real' computers both at home and at work and anyone's house I visit. The ONLY time I can see using this is if I'm at an airport or a hotel without wi-fi.

Don't get me wrong, I'll need that EVENTUALLY, but I figure I'll buy it when that trip comes along. No need to rush out and get it now.

Has anyone got it to run on a windows XP machine?
I would love to use this instead of the USBconnect 881 that I have through AT&T...

A one time $10 fee vs. $60.00 per month is a huge savings....

are you referring to the mail app on your mac or can you not even log into your mail account on like yahoo or gmail for example? Cause that wouldn't make sense..

Use thunderbird, it supports socks5 proxies I believe. (Of course web based mail will work!)

Wow!

Works like a charm thanks to the tutorial by Mac-Addict! Tethered my MacBook Pro and got almost a megabit in the speed tests. Very happy! :D

It is quite fascinating to watch all this unfold. Apple just made the NetShare guys rich. This is sure to be the #1 app in the "paid apps" section. I am sure other developers are asking Apple to pull their apps for a day. ;)

Because it's not really tethering. It's not routing you onto the net. It's just a proxy app on the iphone doing the data transfer. It's legit.

LOL, not really tethering?

And, that is exactly what it does, is "route you onto the net".

If it didn't "route you onto the net" you would not be able to view a webpage :p

The data the iPhone is transferring is your internet connection either via EDGE or 3G on the iPhone.

Actually it works over the wifi, not the cable. "Tethering" is now a misnomer.

He just meant you obviously want to plug it into the USB on the laptop so you don't drain your iphone battery. Nothing to do with networking.

Are people really having problems finding it? Searching for NetShare and Nullriver in the iTunes Store both brought it up immediately.

Well - other than the fact that if you're in the US it might not be available for long... That was enough incentive for me as I know for a fact I'll use it, just not today.

It works!

So happy. I got it via mobile app store on my iphone when I saw this story updated on my phone.
I got out at 3:30 and set it up, works like a charm, very cool. Excited

Searched the Thread but did not find anyone mention Cisco VPN tunnel with this. Does anyone have this setup and using Cisco's VPN software on top?
That would be great. I would primarily use this to get back to the office in if I were in a real pinch.

Thanks,
Alan

See what I said before...

If the powers-that-be don't like this, they'll find a way to block it from working, no doubt. I think it's here to stay, but I'm just saying that IF it goes away, it goes away for you too. So I see no reason to buy today.

Originally you could only access the App with the direct link, after a bit, it appeared in the Mobile App Store and in Search.

No, it's different. If it was using NAT and actually routing you, you wouldn't need proxy settings. That probably would be against the agreement (and that *would* be tethering.) The laptop is *not* routed onto the net. It is on a private network without Internet access.

The way the proxy works is it runs on the iphone and does all the data transfer. Your app (say Safari) on the laptop talks (on your own private network you created) to the iphone and says, hey can you please fetch this for me? And it does. Just like providing a remote control for the iphone on your own private network. Your laptop is *not* routed on the internet, therefore it is *not* tethering.

OK - The app store method vs. the jailbreak method....

Which one is less of a PITA to use AFTER it's set up. Say if one wanted to do a quickie tether for 10 min every few weeks? I'd pay $10 for ease of quick use post set up.

Thoughts?

If you create a "location" in your network prefs that has all the settings for your computer in it, it's as easy as cranking up your ad hoc network and then starting netshare on the phone. Simple.

This is Apples responsibility

As far as I am concerned, if Apple allows the application on their store, then its completely fine for me to use with my iPhone in the country whose store allowed me to download it.

I'm in Canada. It appeared in the store, I've paid for and downloaded it. Apple has guards at the gate to make sure any app that violates the user agreements for the phone do not make it into the store. Period.

If my service is disrupted as a result of me using this Apple approved app for my device, then Apple can settle the matter. :)

Here's what AT&T says :

UNLIMITED PLANS CANNOT BE USED FOR UPLOADING, DOWNLOADING OR STREAMING OF VIDEO CONTENT (E.G. MOVIES, TV), MUSIC OR GAMES. FURTHERMORE, UNLIMITED PLANS (EXCEPT FOR DATACONNECT AND BLACKBERRY TETHERED) CANNOT BE USED FOR ANY APPLICATIONS THAT TETHER THE DEVICE (THROUGH USE OF, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, CONNECTION KITS, OTHER PHONE/PDA-TO-COMPUTER ACCESSORIES, BLUETOOTH® OR ANY OTHER WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY) TO LAPTOPS, PCS, OR OTHER EQUIPMENT FOR ANY PURPOSE.

That implies a person cant stream music on the iphone either..
I'm guessing the rules have changed otherwise Pandora and AOL Radio would be against the rules too.

Heh. That says you can't download games either. Theoretically AT&T could terminate your connection for downloading Crash Bandicoot. :p
