I spoke to an AT&T rep about this and your account will be flagged. I am not sure what they will do but it would be interesting.

Works pretty well! This will pay for itself the first time I don't have to buy $10 wireless internet in an airport. Cool.

What the hell did you expect him/her to say? That it's fine to use it? Christ.

Don't worry, it might not be. If they are examining packets and looking at IP addresses, etc, they'll never see any indication that any other device than the iPhone is talking TCP/IP, because it's not (the proxy app is the only thing talking to the net and it's on the iPhone.) Again, that's the difference between a proxy and true tethering.

Vraiment? Theres no way, if thats the case I'm about to go nuts.
Yes, really. If you are in Quebec, why would you be on AT&T? There is no such thing as unlimited data on a cell network. Imagine if everyone started using GBs of data per month. The data layer would crash under the stress and possibly interfere with the voice network. Cellular technology was never meant for high throughput data access with everyone on the network. It can handle intermittent bursts but not sustained traffic of thousands of users in a cell area. If you need high bandwidth data access, I would suggest using WiFi hotspots or using your home network.

Cannot get the app to work...

The phone is sending data, but it's like EDGE shuts down and won't receive anything. I've followed the instructions and tutorials to the T.

Could anyone offer some words of wisdom?

Here's what AT&T says :

UNLIMITED PLANS CANNOT BE USED FOR UPLOADING, DOWNLOADING OR STREAMING OF VIDEO CONTENT (E.G. MOVIES, TV), MUSIC OR GAMES. FURTHERMORE, UNLIMITED PLANS (EXCEPT FOR DATACONNECT AND BLACKBERRY TETHERED) CANNOT BE USED FOR ANY APPLICATIONS THAT TETHER THE DEVICE (THROUGH USE OF, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, CONNECTION KITS, OTHER PHONE/PDA-TO-COMPUTER ACCESSORIES, BLUETOOTH® OR ANY OTHER WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY) TO LAPTOPS, PCS, OR OTHER EQUIPMENT FOR ANY PURPOSE.

That implies a person cant stream music on the iphone either..
I'm guessing the rules have changed otherwise Pandora and AOL Radio would be against the rules too.

Yeah, Youtube comes to mind. Doesn't it stream video? It's been on all iPhone's since Day 1! :)

I got the App, but I'm waiting to use it until someone releases some sort of statement.

Why? So if you can't use it you just wasted $10?

People, if you are going to download the app, USE it. Otherwise why waste $10? Surely Nullriver is in it for the money yes, but it's like donating for no reason. :)

Pc Instructions????

For the love of anything.....Can someone please provide setup instructions for PC???

5GB cap on UNLIMITED data plan

http://www.gearlog.com/2008/03/att_more_than_5gb_of_data_cost.php
"We've heard elsewhere about both AT&T and Verizon throttling connections to 200 kbps/sec if you go over 5GB. But what about that new "DataConnect 5GB Overage Plan?" You can't find it anywhere on AT&T's Web site. But if you call in, you'll find it's $350/month for 5GB, plus $0.50 per megabyte (really, $.0005 per kb, but my megabyte formula is more readable.) Since you're probably a heavy downloader, let's think of that as $500 per gigabyte."

I think I'll pass on paying $10 for the privileged over going over 5GB. Good luck. Of course AT&T is going to approve tethering with a gold mine like this working for them.

Step 1: Visit your local Apple store.
Step 2: Buy a mac.
Step 3: Profit.

But seriously, if you don't know how to configure a proxy on ANY operating system, that's a little sad.

For posterity.. have you bothered trying Windows' help function, or google?

To everyone mentioning youtube, etc..

Na man, you missed a step.

Step 1: Visit your local Apple store.
Step 2: Buy a mac.
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit.

Last I checked, this wasn't PCRumors.com, funny how folks keep asking for Win/PC instructions. :)

The people who have iPhones but not Macs have no idea what they are missing out on :p

Assuming they haven't changed the terms and conditions since agreeing to the initial contract, tethering is specifically off-limits: http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/articles-resources/iphone-terms.jsp (just search for "tether")

I looked at the TOS you linked to, and while I;m including the tethering line, the line above is interesting as well...

That also makes it sound like Pandora and AOL Radio are in breach of that clause, so it makes me wonder completely...

If my service is disrupted as a result of me using this Apple approved app for my device, then Apple can settle the matter. :)

I'd have to agree. I wouldn't worry at all about data increases considering this was approved and is currently hosted by Apple on the App Store.

Maybe I was feeling.. charitable? You spend your money and I'll spend mine. ;)
