My guess is one of two things:
1) The A14 has a USB 2.0 controller so that is what the iPad is limited to, be it Lightning or USB-C.
2) Apple is intentionally restricting performance to USB 2.0 speeds as part of the differentiation from the iPad Air.

As for iPhone 15, I am very confident it will support 10Gbps over USB-C.

The iPad Air 4 has an A14 chip and it supports 5Gbps USB-C transfer speeds.
This was likely intentional by Apple to make potential tech-aware buyers think twice about going for the base iPad 10. Makes it more tempting to go for the higher-end iPads.

Well that sucks. Typical Apple. Ultra cheap chip. I was going to buy one, my 1st Gen ipad pro's battery is dying, but not any more. I'll look around for a used newer Ipad pro
You should be able to get your battery replaced I think, but someone else has said that they tried and Apple said no, but worth checking as it IS on their battery replacement website. If you don’t need the speed, you can’t beat $99 for an battery.

My guess is USB 2.0 speeds on base models, fast speeds on Pro models.
Or they can just keep all current models with USB 2.0 speeds and come out with a new iPhone 15 “ultra” (a la Apple Watch ultra) with USB 3.0 speeds, better battery, etc and other features and charge alot more money … and it will sell like hot cakes.

Lol the same connector will be used on the 1600 dollar iPhone 15 pro max. At some point their general public will catch on that Android phones are years more advanced, way less buggy, and like half the cost of Apples latest stuff.
The general public already knows. That’s why around the world Android outsells iOS by a wide margin. It just seems that, in the US, people just prefer iOS to Android, but even still it’s still roughly the same.

Yea I guess you’re right, I just can’t keep thinking about what a value the pixel phones are, pretty much better in every way for much less money.

With the price hike is there any reason to even consider this thing? The Air is a lot better value, let alone picking up an older refurbished Air/Pro. The 9th generation is a better buy if you want a cheap base iPad.

I guarantee this means only the iPhone 15 Pro/Max (Ultra?) will get USB 4 speeds.

Also toss this one onto the "I want Tim Cook gone" pile.

So Apple gimps their latest 'entry level' device and that means USB C is a mess?
Poster is speaking more to the overall mess that is USB-C. Is it USB 2? USB3? USB 3.2 Gen 1? USB 3.2 2x2? At least with the old A type connector you could look inside the connector and see the extra pins for USB3.
There's a fairly reasonable expectation that if it's got USB-C, it's a USB 3 capable device. It was reasonable to expect some devices were usb2 when the connector was new, but that was years ago at this point. It's not like USB3 is some kind of exotic technology at this point.
