I'm not an iPad owner so this is an honest question: How many iPad owners here use the cable to transfer data?

I transfer data on my phone using Wi-Fi or AirDrop. I occasionally move images to a backup drive using Image Capture, so that's a wired connection. That's like twice a year.

But that's about it. New apps, software updates, data/docs/image transfers are mostly done wirelessly. So many people use iCloud for backups, image & video storage, etc., they probably use a wired connection even less than I do.

So for you iPad users out there, does the throughput speed of a wired connection even affect you?

The port in question on the 10th gen iPad supports 4k video up to 30fps. You can’t do that with 480Mb connection. BTW, max tech is clickbait trash, I can’t believe anyone would believe anything they say.

Exactly. All it took was one look at the hysteria-inducing video cover for me to remember why I never watch their videos.

I suspect the people that are transferring videos or large files have an iPad Pro. I’ve never transferred anything with a cable to any of my Apple devices.

They might as well have stayed with lightning on this one seeing how it only supports 1st gen Pencil and you need a stupid adapter to charge it.
Well I think they probably would have but some government bureaucrat decided what port they needed to use. Apple simply complied with the regulation.

See this is a case where everyone asks for USB-C, Apple gives people USB-C, they complain. No matter what you do people are going to complain about it 🤦‍♂️

Yes and no. Yes because I dream about fast connection. No because I have no other choice than use this old slow crap connection served by Apple.

I kinda love this because I’m one to seek revenge out of spite myself. EU makes us use USB-C, fine, gonna be at the same slow ass speeds as Lightning on purpose so no one can benefit since you forced us to do this. I love the balls in the FU to all. Whoever made this decision has some grapefruits and I respect that.

Now this isn’t good for any consumer, but if you’re gonna buy it, you’re going to buy it anyway regardless.

Man we live in exciting times, I’m gonna tweet about this on Elons new and improved Twitter platform ❤️❤️

Plz understand sarcasm 😆

You can see where the USC protocol needed comes from when looking at the external display support for each iPad model:

iPad 10th Gen -
  • Supports one external display with up to 4K resolution at 30Hz or 1080p resolution at 60Hz
iPad mini -
  • Supports one external display with up to 4K resolution at 30Hz
iPad Air -
  • Supports one external display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz
iPad Pro -
  • Supports one external display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz
The Air and Pro look to be designed to work with Apple's high end displays whereas the mini and 10th generation don't. I guess that's why they don't need anywhere near as much throughput.

Apple gonna punish customers because of EU. As EU forced Apple to remove lightning port, they have decided to keep lower speeds for certain products. In that case Apple could limit the storage capacity as well.
For first time, I did a backup of my 12PM last night. It felt like ages to do a backup of 145GB.

Next iPhone lineup will have USB-C for all. But 15 and 15plus/mini will be limited to 480mbps like new iPad, 15 pros will have standard USB-C speeds upto 10Gbit/s and iPhone ultra will have upto 40 or 80 Gbits/s

You absolutely have a choice. If you just bought the 10th-gen iPad, which appeared in stores yesterday (so it's certainly possible), then you have 2 weeks to return it and buy a different model. Or get a different model from the refurb store. Or buy Android/Windows/etc.

You have an abundance of choices. This is one model of iPad that was just released yesterday. No one is being forced to buy this.

I'm sure that Apple gonna talk 10 minutes on how fast their USB-C is in 15 pro. And 15 will have unapologetically slow speeds. Definitely a bunch of paid developers will have surprised faces over the latest connectivity.

Lets see what's so good about this 10th gen iPad....

Landscape stage cam
Bigger rear lens
Cool looking iPad body

But what about the the rest?

Keyboard$$$
Usb-C speed

(vomits in the airplane barf bag)

All of this for a measly $120 more?

No thanks.

(Looks like the mini iPhones are preparing to welcome 10th gen iPad into their club)

AFAIK, iPhones don't even output video via the port so I can't see it needing anymore than USC 2.0
Video outputs from the port.. but more importantly, ProRes takes up A LOT of space… we need usb C 3.2 speeds otherwise the phone is a paperweight

You are fully right - the only use case I see is a wall mounted iPad with an ethernet connection.

No worries here - nobody in our family is buying one and the bad reviews have turned away several friends. All of us will just hang on another year. personally, I'm far more interested in what will happen with the 14" MB Pro in the future. It can replace laptop and these confused iPad releases that don't run serious software - apart from Resolve.
