Of course. They must have plummeted due to this single limitation that’s not even a downgrade compared to the previous model, which no one knew about until today. That’s definitely the reason for plummeting sales. 😉
In addition to the high price, Apple Pencil (1!), the dongle, and now this cheap usbC, it’s definitely a bunch of reasons to not upgrade.

This doesn’t matter. People buying this iPad are only going to use the port for charging and nothing more.

For most users, I think you’re right. But it’s still a scummy move that leaves a bitter taste and will cause reputational damage amongst people who follow these kind of details.

I'm not an iPad owner so this is an honest question: How many iPad owners here use the cable to transfer data?

As someone who only uses their iPad for consumption, I don’t. However if I was using my iPad as a laptop replacement I would be using the port for data transfer. The overall price of iPad 10 and keyboard ($700) means there will be people buying this instead of a laptop.

Even sub $200 laptops support usb3 speeds. The iPad really should too.

This iPad serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever, much older A14 chip yet the ATV gets A15 🤔, gen 1 pencil and now USB 2.0 speeds! Just WTF is Apple thinking?
Should there should just be one (cheap) iPad with all the same bells and whistles of the high end ones?

That it'd cannibalize Air sales / Pro .

This is the current BASE MODEL, with base specs. Car manufacturers do exactly the same thing

Need more, Pay more, Get more.

So the current iPhones are paperweights?
To me, yes. I like to shoot video in 3 hour blocks. Getting 80 GB HEVC off my phone is a hassle. Camera connector dongle rarely works for large files. Airdrop takes forever.
If you do any long form video, it’s unmanageable.

So let me get this straight. It is basically slightly bumped upgrade from 9th gen (and even that is 2 year old tech), with slow USB-C, non-laminated display which is only sRGB, and they still dare to charge 170 € more for it.

This means that despite being equipped with a USB-C port, the 10th-generation iPad has the same data transfer speeds as the ninth-generation iPad with the Lightning connector.
Correction:

This means that despite being equipped with a USB-C port, the 10th-generation iPad has the same data transfer speeds as the first-generation iPad with the 30-pin connector.

This is what I said would happen. (in most topics about people complaining about lightning on iPhone) iPad Mini is only 5gbps, so the "base" iPad would even be slower.

I am sure the iPhone 15 will have USB-C but only at 480mb/s (USB 2.0) the iPhone 15 Pro might allow USB 3.0 speeds, but I would not hold my breath.

Like lightning, USB Type-C is just a connector. Nothing more. Nothing less. It does not define the link speed. The first gen iPad Pro could do 5gbps (USB 3.0) over Lightning. And I'm sure they could've kept updating it to USB 4.0 speeds if they (Apple) wanted. Without changing the connector (enough pins to do it).

Fully agree.
I am not surprised that no one here describes concrete everyday situations in which he suffers painfully from 3 seconds of loss of lifetime.
I use Airport, or snchronize with WIFI and only use USB for charging. I do not transfer 10GB mkv's via cable and do not synchronize with Windows/iTunes. Who rants here will have a different everyday life than me.

But now, it's "EU proof..."
And this is important. The base 9th Gen iPad will probably be discontinued in about a year partly because of the EU USB-C port regulation going into effect in 2024. Apple will not be allowed to sell the 9th Gen iPad in the EU anymore because of the Lightning port.

So the new 10th Gen will take over the low end of the lineup. I suspect we'll see a price drop to $399 to come close to the appealing price of the 9th Gen.

At $399, I can live with all the compromises this model brings over an iPad Air with a net gain in colors, speakers, better rear camera, and webcam location over the 9th Gen.

Incorrect, completely. The law will only apply to new products.

They should have least made it public knowledge in their tech spec page.

Apple are always hiding the finer detail.

I’ve been trying to tell people that USB-C on a future iPhone 15 doesn’t necessarily mean 3.0 speeds.
That would be a shame if apple gimps it’s pro device to usb2.0. but at least it will still work with existing usb-c/thunderbolt/usb4 cables; lightning cable no longer necessary.

Apple cutting corners whilst pushing up prices. Not the first or the last time they’ll do it.

Not really, the spec hasn’t changed at all, just the connector. As many have mentioned, this is not the iPad anyone buys who cares about things like data transfer rates. It’s the base ipad, it’s not expected to have high end features, especially if those features are largely irrelevant to the target audience. It’s simply the charging port to most people.
