So I get it now, apple doesn't want to cannibalize sales of higher end iPads and it wants to offer some entry level products at lower price points. I still think it's bad PR for apple.

And here I was contemplating getting an iPad finally this year... then I see this one released with it being overpriced and it's Apple Pencil $10 dongle and this... and the iPad Air with peeling screens? (wtf) ... Anyone looking for a decently priced or more economic iPad in a more modern form factor should SKIP this generation. Maybe even the next one, we'll see... Such a mess...

The difference is not in the connector. Apple could have chosen a better chipset to support something like USB 3.2 Gen 2. The USB 2.0 speed is probably within spec.

A9X supports USB 3.0 and since that micro architecture supports it obviously A14 supports it too

heck even the A13 supports thunderbolt 3 as evidenced by the studio display

They will use slow USB C port out of spite even if for no other reason.
Just wait until the official announcement...

"Apple believes in innovation and convenience. To save the environment, we came up with one charger that works across all of your devices. Announcing USB-C with our patented USB-C security enclave chip, allowing speeds up to 15% faster than the leading competition...

We also designed a special new cable that can achieve 2x the speeds of existing USB-2.0 devices. We've decided to name it the Dynamic-Plateau braided pro-max Cable, available for only $39 starting February 30th."

This is why usb c is a mess, imo. Specs and capabilities are left up to a companies discretion. Apple can do this with the iPhone 15 but I hope they don’t.
Don’t put the blame on USB-C. In this case, it’s Apple just being a cheapskate. Now, if we get inferior USB-C with the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro next year, then it’s more of Apple being vindictive rather than a cheapskate.

And Apple wonders why iPad sales have plummeted.....
“literally no one” cares about this. Obviously there are the niche power users. I 100% agree that for the money we pay it should have the latest and greatest on every aspect. We want to feel like the money we spend makes it worth it. But the number of people who actually care about this is very likely TINY.
But then again I guess it boils down to what you expect and need out of your devices.

They probably were able to save $0.10 cents per unit. Every penny counts for Timmy.

That's why the losses from MS and Google are 20x those of Apple. Why should they spend millions of dollars across all those units for the tiny percentage of people who would even need a faster data port on the low end iPad? For all 50 those professional photographers and designers who decided to buy THIS model for work?

Gee I wonder what happens when oppressive and ignorant governments forces technologies that neither work well nor works together on industry? Oh! A nearly dead tech sector just like the EU... It's ok, I'm sure they will impoverish their own people to make up for it in sentiment.

But the Pro iPhones could get the higher speed, perhaps?
iPhone 15, 16, 17 with USB 2.0 480 Mbps speeds over USB-C and
iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max with USB 3.1 with 5 Gbps speeds.
iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max with USB 3.1 with 5 Gbps speeds
iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max with USB 3.1 with 10 Gbps speeds
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max portless and big middle finger to EU and India.

I am on the fence between buying the Pro or the 10, transfer speeds matters to me.
Have you considered the Air? Each step up is $150 difference. iPad 10 + $150 = iPad Air..... iPad Air + $150 = iPad Pro

The Air gives you a better display, 10GBps USB-C, Apple Pencil 2 support, M1 processor and Stage Manager for that $150.

My question is, WHY? Is it cheaper to put gimp the product?
It's more profitable to get you to buy the higher margin product instead.

Anyone seriously looking at the 64GB 10th Gen iPad, pay $20 more and get a refurb 4th gen iPad Air 64GB.

Same cpu, same size, improved display, faster USB-C, Pencil 2 support.

Only thing you lose is a higher MP front facing camera.
True, although I wouldn't put it past them to end support for the Air 4 the corresponding two years earlier than the iPad 10.

I’ve longed assumed the iPhone will have USB 2.0 protocol over USBC. There’s just no real need for anything faster when it’s basically just a charging port.

A very few percent of people are transferring data between their iPad and something else.

People don't want to hear that. I haven't connected my iPhone pro to a computer in years. The Lightning port could have supported 10Gbs and it wouldn't have made a difference to me.

I also have an iPad Pro. It's also never been connected to an accessory. That's not to say that nobody needs the fastest speed supported by USB-C. But that also doesn't mean that everyone needs or expects the highest speed.

I don't see the logic behind these arguments of "I don't need it so it doesn't need to be there". ProRes video recording alone should have forced Apple onto a high speed USB connection several years ago. The fact that the feature is already built into the A14, and the connector is fully wired up for DisplayPort Alt Mode means this is a gimping via software, all to force someone who wants a feature the hardware can physically do to upgrade to higher end hardware.

Typical Apple BS
I really hope 10th gen bites them in the rear, they made too many of these decisions.

I'm not saying "I don't need it so it doesn't need to be there". It's not an important feature to me. If it doesn't have a feature that you find important then don't buy it.
