And yes, the Ice Lake naming scheme is as follows (Let's take i5-1038NG7 being used in the base $1799 13" MBP):
- 10 = 10th generation
- 3 = Unclear but i believe Spectrum's theory is correct that 3 refers to i5 parts. I've only seen i3 parts using 0 (i3-1000NG4 in base MBA), i5 parts using 3 (i5-1038NG7), and i7 parts using 6 (i7-1068NG7)
- 8 = Wattage. 0 = 9/10W "Y" series, 5 = 15/25W "U" series, 8 = 28W "U" series.
- G7 = Graphics level. G1 = 32 Execution Units, G4 = 48 Execution Units, G7 = 64 Execution Units.

Nice work here. That third digit was really throwing me, and seems like something Intel could have shared publicly.

I'm loving the back and fourth over whether Apple messed up by not choosing AMD for this release (spoiler alert they did,) but for the love of god can someone explain to me why laptop benchmarks have to be ****ing videos these days? I really hate this trend. I don't need a video to look at charts and graphs and get a simple interpretation of what they mean. Guess I'm just getting old :/ ... Wait no I'm pretty sure being able to scan a page in 10 seconds is better than spending at least 30 scrubbing the video to get to the parts that I want... :(

Does anybody have an idea what's up with the different kinds of cameras in the MacBook Pro's and Airs?

I gathered they're all 720p, for a while now, and people are upset about it.
But there seem to be different versions.
Is it different sensors, different lenses, or is it just different processing of what's captured?
Apparently the latest one in the 2020 MBA is worse than the 2019 one.
The one in the 16" looks better. Or lets say different at least.

Does anybody know what's up?
Kinda hoping of course that - while still being 720p - the one in this new 13" Pro gives better quality..

Because the money is in YouTube these days and laptop makers have discovered that YouTubers are fairly good at showcasing their products.

As for Apple messing up by not going AMD, I think Apple are just not nimble enough these days to switch away from Intel when they are planning another switch to their own CPUs in the near(ish) future.

Any buying advice?
MacBook Air with 1,2 ghz i7 or entry macbook pro? Mainly usage for low-mid cpu programs and 4k monitor. Touch Bar not relevant.

I'm going to wait for an extra year and see what it will be
I will not buy a LPDDR3 laptop in 2020 it's crazy
I assume you also will not buy a PC OEM laptop with LPDDR3 memory as well, since there are plenty of those on sale.

What is your budget? Ideally, how much do you want to spend maximum?

There's space on the lid and they don't use it, for no good reason. Your display is your main point of interaction with the device and yes it matters. Having even an inch more screen can mean that suddenly those two applications you often use together can now go comfortably side by side. That can increase productivity substantially. In my experience my exact display setup is the single most important factor when it comes to that. That's why people obsess over Apple wasting away valuable space to make sure you have half an inch of black plastic to stare at.

The good reason ... not to reduce space on inverter or cabling used for it within the hinge.

Many laptop manufacturers follow the humdrum complaints for and demands of slimmer bezels. Only to those demanding consumers find out that faulty inverters for their glorious laptops end up failing going fully blank or dark. Apple had this famously with the 2011 MBA to 2012-2015 MBP lineup and since changed the hinge design and layout for the inverter and cables into the screen.

Slimmer bezels ... look nice but we're after daily and longevity of performance not a 1 stop show.

As per my previous response here, the base $1799 model is using i5-1038NG7. This is a brand new 28W part currently exclusive to Apple and not announced during the initial ICL-U SKU launch.

The BTO i7 model is i7-1068NG7 which is the same exact spec as the previously announced i7-1068G7 but with Apple's modification (most likely Apple's smaller packaging) but also 28W part.

Despite being announced alongside other ICL-U parts, the 1068G7 is currently not being used in any other laptop. 2020 13" Macbook Pro will be the first to use the part (or in this case... Apple's variant of it)

Some food for thought:

Last year in May, Apple released a refresh of the 15-inch MBP. Six months later in November, they released an updated 16-inch MBP that blew the earlier 15-inch release out of the water. So for those deciding whether or not to purchase the new 13-inch (and can stand to wait 6 or so months), it might be an idea to just wait it out- especially since the relative conservativeness of this update only adds credence to Apple following suit on last year's release schedule.

The starting price has been $1799 for 3-1/2 years and with the DRAM and storage doubled, it’s much more reasonable than before.
Where I live it's more than 2k€ after tax so more than 2k5$
The 1400€ option is muche more reasonable for me, but was unfortunately left behind

Not if Apple couldn’t get a big enough supply of 10th Gen CPUs, given that not all 10th Gen have Iris GPUs, there are no 9th Gen 15w or 28w CPUs, which left 8th Gen for a reliable supply. No one seems to mention that Intel never released any 7w, 15w or 28w 9th Gen CPUs for mobile. Maybe Apple wanted segmentation, but I suspect that Intel still cannot supply enough 10nm parts.

What proper tests, So you are telling me corona, V-ray, Blender, Code compiling aren't proper tests? Besides apart from Photoshop & Imports in premiere (which depends on Quick Sync) 4900HS trashes 10875 in premier (warp stabilizer), After effects and also in 8K video playback.

Da Vinci is more GPU dependent & taht Aero model has better GPU ( 2070 super) thatn G14 (2060 MaxQ).
BTW another reviewer Hardware Unboxed validates Jarrord's finding & both of them are well known Laptop reviewers.

Regarding Battery life, G14 runs 10 hours with video playback. It's not just Linus Dave Lee also had the same experience with the battery life of G14.

Please provide some more reliable testers? I wouldn't trust content from these YouTubers, let alone tests. I'd take a look at my aforementioned link. Let's say though, those tests are correct, it certainly doesn't invalidate the other tests done by the link I provided, therefore, it just shows that Intel even with a four year old architecture is beating this so-called amazing AMD CPU.

We haven't even got started on the fact there's Thunderbolt support (and it's integrated).

how likely will they do this again...?

The MacBook Pro 16 and Mac Pro (nice wheel kit Apple) are the only really new products on the computer side. The biggest feature on notebook new releases (for the most part) is putting in a keyboard that should have been there all along. They correct a FU and call it New!. Everything else the last few years has been a phone in upgrade.

Exciting pipeline my a**. Heads down creating my a**.

And as usual, most folks here, after seeing the "new" releases, are looking forward to the *next* update. Tim has to love this.

It’s so funny how the Apple bashing trolls are always the first comments in any article. They truly are trolling constantly and once anything comes up they do their thing and bash it immediately. Then gradually as you scroll down the trolls are replaced with the intelligent educated and super informed posts which everyone appreciates. So funny.

It's your comments that is uneducated. Peoples are pointing out correctly that Apple's new Macbook Pro is using a 2 generation old Intel cpu and still use the same design.

No.

DelayedGratificationGene’s comment is spot on. And it’s yours that’s uneducated because you talk as if “specs” and performance are the same thing. A bunch of numbers on paper are only a fraction of what is needed for performance.

It’s been the same story for 25+ years. Ever since the original iMac after Steve came back, Apple’s specs were always lower on paper than PCs at half the price or less, but they were still faster (look up the MHz myth). Of course part of the reason for that was that comparing PPC MHz to Intel (Pentium etc) MHz was meaningless Because they were fundamentally different architectures. But even since the Intel switch when we can compare similar “specs”on paper, Macs still PERFORM better with the “same” specs.

Why? Because the “specs” are only a small part of the story.

1. The rest of the hardware: There’s a lot more in a computer than CPU, GPU, RAM, storage type, etc. and if you think the rest isn’t important then you should educate yourself. It’s like saying Hyundai’s 2L engine is the same as BMW’s 2L engine. Ludicrous.

Apple doesn’t just cobble together a bunch of parts with certain specs and call it good like the cheap competition do. They spend a lot of time and money on engineering an entire hardware package. And if you look at any of the competitors that give as much attention to engineering the entire hardware package as Apple does, then you find prices are the same or MORE than Apple.

2. Apple’s kernel, OS, development frameworks, and everything on top of those perform better and faster than competition with the same hardware specs. Partly this is because Apple’s OS etc. is just fundamentally better but also because Apple builds their own hardware and software to work together to complement each other better than is possible without that.

In most cases (some specialized exceptions) doing a task on a Mac and doing the same task on a PC with the same hardware, the Mac will do it quicker or better in some other way.

So Apple can keep a cheaper 2-generations old CPU in a *Mac* and it’s still better than its competitors with today’s gen CPU in it. And because of that cost cut it costs us less to buy than if they’d put something more expensive in it. So why should they? Why do they NEED to? What is the problem with fixing the old model’s keyboard and keeping it around?

3. And all of that is before we start talking about the overall user experience. Sure, Apple has screwed up some things (and that’s not unique to Tim - remember MobileMe, antennagate, etc.?) but the overall experience is STILL better than the competition (you think MS, Google, etc don’t screw stuff up?). If you don’t think that’s the case then why do you even care about anything Apple? Why is Apple even a blip on your radar? Why are you (All you complainers) even here?

Lastly, your comment on “same design”? Who cares? The design is renowned as one of the best in the industry - except the keyboard, which... breaking news... they fixed!! Why do they need to change the design NOW?

They most likely do have a 14” and/or ARM (which will most likely start in the MBP 13 and/or Air) and/or some other new design in the works. But It’s just not ready yet. If it’ll be many more months or a year or whatever before they can release it, then what? So they should wait and not fix the keyboard issue until then? Think of the uproar we’d have here if they’re STILL selling butterfly keyboard 13” MBP’s a year after they’ve fixed it on everything else.

So no. They release an update. Fix the keyboard. And double the ram and storage for the same prices while they’re at it, and you’re still going to complain???

Or... perhaps you think they should release the next redesign 14” (or whatever other redesign while it’s still half assed and they haven’t ironed out all the kinks. How’s that going to fly here?

This is what DelayedGratificationGene’s comment is getting at and as I started with its far from uneducated. It’s spot on.

People buy Apple stuff in droves despite all these supposed “deficient specs” because Apple caters to - and delivers for - people who care more about RESULTS than specs.

Meanwhile it’s the people (and their comments) who don’t get that that are “uneducated”.

That is good to know, and the answer I was looking for. I see 10th gen vs 8th gen and immediately assume the 10th will be better.

Exactly the problem with many people here. Except where you then had the fortitude to ask instead of just assume and complain.

As a result you’ll make a better, educated choice, and contribute something positive to the universe instead of sucking the life out of it. 😉

I mean it sure seem plausible given the credulity and amount of the analysts claiming so, Apple's relative release predictability, and again, by how marginal this update is.

It’s definitely plausible but I don’t think it will happen. If I recall correctly, analysts like Kuo are calling for miniLED to be phased in from late 2020 through 2021. What makes sense is that 16” gets a refresh in late 2020 and 13”/Air gets another refresh in 2021.

Apple is going to continue its slow-drip in the Mac line. There will be big updates ahead for sure. But, for example, I highly doubt we’ll see FaceID introduced at the same time as MiniLED. There is only so much tech Apple can bring to the table at once without increasing price to the point where it affects sales/lowers demand.

On top of this, we are on the brink of a global recession w/ high unemployment, and many companies are bracing for lower demand of products overall. The market isn’t very conducive to new products and there are many supply chain challenges and risks. Not to mention much of Apple’s team working remotely, and the setbacks that come with that (especially when it comes to prototyping hardware).

I think this 2020 13” update was quite solid. Better keyboard, faster RAM (faster than the 16” even), spec bumps all around, and slight improvements to both speakers and microphone. There is likely some thermal improvements too but we won’t know for sure until testing can be done.
