Foxconn in North Vietnam

Whilst I was on holiday in Vietnam 2 weeks ago, travelling on the coach to Hou Long Bay I happen to notice along the way a Foxconn assembly plant next door to a Canon factory...
So if indeed Apple are assembling Apple products in Vietnam then this may explain some of the recent activity happening there...
I did also see a couple of 'Apple' Cafe's using the corporate logo in reverse which was funny....

Bring production back to the US and they might have better luck keeping leaks under control!

The current MacBook has an LED LCD display so it'd be a step back if the new one didn't have one. Overall, very predictable update. Incoming UK price rise to £849 too of course.

What's a viable alternative at this price range?

10+

This will be the go-to entry level mac for high schoolers and such. Excellent product specs.

What we really have to worry about is Apple funding a clandestine army to invade Vietnam.

Some people prefer the look and feel of the white MacBook's(which also have a unibody enclosure) so I didn't really think it was worth mentioning.

Just because some people prefer the plastic material to the aluminum doesn't change the differences in cost of manufacturing.

Did anyone else notice the different magsafe power cable?

It's not different. The previous generation had the "L"-shaped MagSafe.

They Ain't No Spielberg

Could we possibly have any more hammering, barking dogs, screaming children or 315# fat lady passing a 2 foot stool two Portacans over as background noise to this production?

Wow those leaks keep coming! I'm wondering how Apple is gonna readjust its security after the last few weeks of constant leaks. It could very well be that some other company pays some workers serious money to motivate them to breach security or to share Apple's trade secrets.

So for 150$ now you get 2 GB RAM, Aluminium case with black bezel, illuminated keyboard, and Firewire-800...

Hum... somehow I don't see why you'd get this over a MBP 13".

Is the MacBook made of aluminum? Will the MacBook dent instead of crack if you drop it? The fact is, it costs more to make the MacBook Pro than it does the MacBook. You also get FireWire, an SD card slot, and a backlit keyboard for starters.

I'm not even sure how to respond to this ridiculous statement. Clearly you have no idea what you're talking about.

Nice strawman. They both go through the same unibody manufacturing process, aluminum does not cost more than polycarbonite-plastic.

The fact is that it DOESN'T cost more to make the MacBook Pro. Just because it's more expensive doesn't mean it's more expensive to make. The black MacBook was more expensive than the white one, does that mean it costs more to manufacture? No.

Unless the price is very low I agree. There is no point to this MB. The MBP is much better. Although I like the look of the white plastic MB.

I've got an old Core Duo macbook from 2006.

Generally, how much of an improvement would I see with the specs of this new model mb?

Thanks :)

So here's what the 13" MBP has then over this:

4Gb ram vs 2Gb
320Gb HDD vs 250Gb
10 Hr. battery vs 7 Hr.

That's excluding the aluminum chassis with backlit keyboard. I really don't know why anyone would buy a Macbook given for $200 you get so much more.

I doubt polycarbonate which requires petroleum to make costs less than Aluminium.

However, Aluminium should in the end be a bit more resistant to bumps than plastic (chips/dents vs cracks) so it might be worth a bit more to the consumer.

Anyway, at the volumes and number of units we're talking about, the difference isn't more than a few cents on the dollar

All we need next is the MACBOOK AIR leak and a hands on review and that will complete the notebooks :D

I love these leaks, people know whether or not they will buy, who cares if it's shown early.
