I have a feeling it's an 8GB RED nano... I think there's a real market for people who want an 8GB iPod nano, and WOULD buy red... but skip it because they need the capacity. A 30GB red video might work too... but it would be ugly, methinks, because its not metallic.

Impact? I don't think the wheels of science and research are powered by "impact". They need hard cash to solve this.

You can raise the awareness to everyone, but without the cash it's fruitless.

To say that someone's awareness is better than giving cash to a charity that funds research is harmful to that research!

Taking the awareness campaign to the (presumably) intended conclusion, I think you underestimate the power that it can create. If enough people are concerned by the cause being promoted it goes from simply a charity to being a political issue. At that point, political parties & governments can see the benefit of supporting the cause as more people voting for them.

A few tens of millions from companies certainly would be a great help to the charities, but it would be dwarfed by the money that governments have available if the will of the people is behind it.

Because it's about visually raising AIDS awareness among the public.

A mass amount of individuals seen with (PRODUCT)Red iPods is going to have a MUCH larger and longer lasting impact than a company donation, even if they had a press release and media event about it.

Other than in an Apple store I have never seen one. Not sure where these mass amounts of individuals are with these things but they certainly arent living near me.

Well, it IS only two weeks old... of course, remember Livestrong bands? Seems like everyone in my school back when I was in 7th grade had one (or two) of those...

Well whever you put ur hand where it would get slapped...... I don't think people hide iPods there. Especially not RED iPods.

The difference is that Livestrongs were like $1 and iPods are $200. I haven't even seen a 2G Nano yet, but they are only 2 months old.

The 30GB iPod is $249, but I highly doubt it's a replacement model. I don't think Apple whould release a new iPod without a "Super Special iPod Event", so it's most likely a (Product) RED 30GB iPod. Plus the RED iPod nano was released on a Friday. Anybody see a pattern?

bleh

i dunno, i think $10 is pretty thin considering it costs apple about $75 to make a nano. I'd be a lot more willing to buy one if the margin was greater, like $20 or $25. But I also imagine that's more the corporate penny-pinchers than anything that are responsible for that. They probably wouldnt give up more than $10.
oh well.
Still, Red colors going into other product lines is cool. I think a red macbook would be sharp but i dunno about other products. even the iMac in red i think would possibly be a little too much on the eyes.

Exactly. The more people who know about it the more likely people would donate. Thats why its called awareness.

I'm pretty sure whats he saying is raising awareness while donating cash is the best. I don't think apple wouldn't do this unless there was a clear marketable advantage that could be seen. A RED iPod could drive further sales, add to their philanthropic prestige, and well just be an excuse for another color.

Those are great arguments, but that is not what was said. There are those that believe they are making a genuine contribution just because they care. As if caring is somehow helping research.

Example the ribbon campaigns(Hollywood Awards, ect...). It's a feel good thing to put a ribbon on your shirt to show how compassionate and caring you are about a cause. It doesn't really do anything but make you feel good. Raising awareness just for awareness sake is the same thing.

Wear a red ribbon and you make yourself feel good, or donate a $10 to Aids research and you make an Aids victim feel good! However; Buy a red Ipod Nano and both feel good :)

Don't get me wrong, I fully support (product)red. I just have a real hard time with the ribbon wearer's feel-good attitude. If I mis-read the original post I appologize, to me it sounded as if the "impact" of awareness was greater than donations.

If this even happens, it's got to be a (product) RED iPod 30GB. I can't imagine Apple would launch a new touchscreen iPod without an event, and at the same pricepoint as the just-refreshed 5.5G.

If it's not (product) RED it'll probably be some other special edition iPod or something. (product) RED iPod HiFi anyone??!

Of course, it could be the iPhone! :D

Or a G5 Powerbook, sold at $249 as a way to say "we're sorry".

I completely agree with you. Thats why I support talking about donations and donation instead of merely buying red stuff. But, if it pushes Apple to release a non-8GB Nano thats plenty of charity work theyve done already.

Bono's campaign centers on the color red, so it's specifically tied to red products (actually, it's called Product (RED)). Without the color, the statement is really just a clever donation.
I feeling ornery at the moment, so I feel the need to point out that not all (Product) Red products are actually red.

I Got It...

I feeling ornery at the moment, so I feel the need to point out that not all (Product) Red products are actually red.

All of Apple's are

.................................................................

It's a (RED) iPod Shuffle Pro... duh

most wearable iPod ever... stronger professional clip
most storage for it's size... 30Gig

^ so obvious

It's certainly possible that they are releasing it, but it seems unlikely that Apple would do this solely based on the Red Nano sales, the production change seems like it would take more time than that. My guess is they probably just wanted to release the Nano first and then bring in the full iPod so they didn't overshadow one another.

I hope this would replace those hideous U2 iPods already

Why not abolish the Red iPods and get Apple to donate a %age of all iPods sold to the charity? I'm never going to buy a red iPod but would like to support the charity.

What's stopping you from making a donation?

Also, I can't believe anyone would think twice about not choosing a RED iPod Nano, over a Nano that doesn't donate a penny.
I think the point is that people who don't plan to buy iPods of any kind would rather see Apple donate the same total amount via all of its products, rather than only for particular ones. That way we can help the cause with any purchase, rather than not helping at all because we have no interest in the promoted product.

However, part of the idea here is to distinguish products that contribute to the charitable cause, because that helps attract attention and gives the purchaser something that reminds them, or shows others, that they are supporters. So I can understand why this campaign works this way.

why red and not pink? is breast cancer not as important as aids? just a thought....

According to this stats website, there were just over 1 million new cases of breast cancer worldwide in the year 2000.

According to UN statistics, an estimated 4.1 million new cases of AIDS are diagnosed each year.

Not saying that breast cancer isn't a horrible and prolific disease, but lets not go down this road, eh?

Plus, there is already a pink iPod Nano ;)

I agree....and hope you are correct.
I am one of those who wants the capacity but do not like the black.
I'd happily take the (red)!

.......just got my Shuffle...OMG...:D

Why not red headphones?

How often do you even see the "body" of iPods? You see their headphones much more often, and they're still white for the (PRODUCT) RED iPod nano. I wonder how useful it is.

Not to mention, seeing a red iPod would just seem rather normal, but seeing a bunch of people with red headphones might be weird (just like it was weird when everyone started wearing white headphones)

This idea probably interferes with Apple's branding of white headphones, though.
