I just hope it's not an 8GB Silver Nano; I just bought a 4GB Silver and would have gone for the 8 if it had the color choice ::grumble::

Does this really matter?

I'm surprised apple isn't waiting until the true video iPod to launch this, unless they have another U2 or red like charity already designated to the true-vids. These iPods are going to become obsolete, hopefully, by christmas, if macrumors is correct, so why would apple go with a red vid. iPod now?

that being said, I'm sure it will be the video. for $250? remember the u2/bono?

How often do you even see the "body" of iPods? You see their headphones much more often, and they're still white for the (PRODUCT) RED iPod nano. I wonder how useful it is.

Not to mention, seeing a red iPod would just seem rather normal, but seeing a bunch of people with red headphones might be weird (just like it was weird when everyone started wearing white headphones)

This idea probably interferes with Apple's branding of white headphones, though.

Pure genius.

WOW! Photo plus photography and design conference is in new york tommorrow. Could we see the fabled aperturePod
I think shuffle wil not be red yet because apple will want it to create it's own popularity apart from product red. $249 to spend and im at photo plus. man i would want a preview and transfer pod so i could move and store data and see my results in a way that speed up my process as a photographer. If the new ipod plays towards the future of itv and the fabled true video ipod, then the new pod will be an interfacing device for drives and displays. Perhaps we will see the touch bezel ipod with a track pad like bezel and smaller than, or as big as an ipod, but all screen. big internal hard drive? not if it can interface an idrive or any external drive. wires or no wires.

this would be cool. and one more thing........ it's and iPod too. :D

I feeling ornery at the moment, so I feel the need to point out that not all (Product) Red products are actually red.
True, but they are all distinctive products in some visible way. In Apple's case, actually making them red is about the only way to increase distinctiveness ;).

Impact? I don't think the wheels of science and research are powered by "impact". They need hard cash to solve this.
Cash which is shaken from interest groups, government sources, and private researchers based on what is "hot" at the moment. By tracking a subset of products with this campaign, they're effectively running a huge public opinion poll including the entire population of this country and the many others that participate in (Product) Red. Imagine 100 million products sell in this country alone. That's a HUGE statement with a tremendous n-size and practically no administrative overhead. It's like holding a public referendum that doesn't involve any added cost (in money OR time) for anyone involved.

red ipod

I think most people heard of AIDS...

they think people are gonna by RED stuff, so that they can showoff that they are aware of the crisis and are "doing their part".

turns out no one is against charity. but people care more about color choices.

sooo... donations for all models! and make more colors!

But tomorrow isn't Tuesday.

Personally, I like the Nano lineup as it is now. I don't entirely see the need for another Red iPod, but if it raises more money for AIDS, I'm not against it.

The current nano lineup is moronic. Limiting the colors available in different capacities is only hurting sale. My wife (and I'm betting a lot of other people) would have snagged an 8gb pink nano in a heartbeat. But she can't, so she's sticking with her 10gb regular iPod for the time being. 4gb just isn't enough for some people, and let's face it, iPods are at least part fashion statement.

Why not abolish the Red iPods and get Apple to donate a %age of all iPods sold to the charity? I'm never going to buy a red iPod but would like to support the charity.

You can cut out the middlemen and donate directly.

why red and not pink? is breast cancer not as important as aids? just a thought....

That would be because the groups addressing breast cancer haven't opted to get involved in this type of promotion. They do have other sorts of corporate tie-ins though.

i dunno, i think $10 is pretty thin considering it costs apple about $75 to make a nano. I'd be a lot more willing to buy one if the margin was greater, like $20 or $25. But I also imagine that's more the corporate penny-pinchers than anything that are responsible for that. They probably wouldnt give up more than $10.

I'm curious to see where you're getting your information. According to Apple's financial statements, their net profit margin is 9.6% for the 2005 fiscal year and only 3.3% for the 2004 fiscal year. Unfortunately, they don't report profit margin by product type for external financial statements, so I can't validate the profit margin on only an iPod. However, if they are only making 9.6% off of an iPod, 10$ is over half of their retained earnings. That's a BIG DEAL.

Those lowball numbers come from raw materials reports, and even those include some guessing. Manufacturing, marketing, logistics, shipping and taxes are apparently free in those reports.
