Who all acquired a New 3DS XL here in good ol' North 'Murrica? How do ya like it?

My household has just about every generation of DS (including the original) but this is our first XL. Not sure I dig it -- bit too lacking in the portability/pocketability department.

Form factor aside, quite a zippy device. I booted this thing up side-by-side with my normal-sized 3DS and the N3X was up and running in about 1/4 the time.

Screen quality seems subpar. Very warm color tone (I played with auto-brightness and level to no avail), uneven backlight on the upper display and a bit of light bleed along the left edge (upper screen) that will drive my OCD into overdrive. :/ Are these gadgets still made at Foxconn?

I got the red variant at my local Best Buy on the 13th. Took them 30 mins to find them; the overnight crew didn't put them out on display, or so I was told. They didn't "do their job", as the blue shirt guy helping me out stated.

Picked up Monster Hunter 4 and Majora's Mask. Didn't know didley about the MH series; as for Major's, didn't get to play it during my college years & I'm looking forward to it now. Got 5 Zelda titles on DS/3DS to chug threw. Eep. (Spirit Tracks, Phantom Hourglass, Ocarina of Time, Link Between Worlds, Majora's Mask).

I'm still waiting for my Red new XL that I preordered on BestBuy.com on 1/17 to even ship out. Pretty stupid, lame, preorder I think. I don't think I'll bother to do that again...

Lame preorder for sure. Even lamer they cancelled a bunch of those limited-edition Majora's Mask N3DSXL pre-orders.

For grins today my wife sent me out on what turned out to be a hopeful yet unrewarding quest. In the Sunday ads in the paper was a Target advertisement for that elusive Majora's Mask edition of the N3DSXL. We checked online, one store ~ 12 miles away claimed "in stock". The wife called & the person she spoke to claimed "out-of-stock". I drove out anyway -- in 1-degree weather. First-world needs, ya know?

Unfortunately the rep on the phone was right and the Target website was wrong. The dude I spoke to in-store said they had the Majora's Mask editions on Friday -- very briefly. Sold out quick.

On the way home I stopped at the Best Buy up the road from that Target, not expecting anything in particular. They didn't have any N3DSXL stock at all and the rep I spoke to searched other stores in the county and all were out. Meanwhile that Target had about a dozen in red/black, as did a Toys R Us I visited yesterday. Guess Best Buy either got a short supply or is better at sellin' 'em.

On another note, be careful picking up any cases for this new gadget -- especially those that are tightly form-fitted and made for 3DSXL but not specifically N3DSXL. While at that Best Buy I grabbed a "Vault case" which is a hard carry case made for the 3DSXL and fits a regular-sized 3DS. Unfortunately the new 3DSXL is just a touch too wide to fit in the case.

Cheers,
Keith

I'm getting mine next week. No fancy Majora's Mask edition (though admittedly, I wouldn't mind having it). I'm going basic black with a couple of fun games starting out.

Anyone got any good recommendations for me? The Zelda games are, of course, must haves. I'll likely end up getting all three of them. Beyond that, I've got my eye on Shin Megami Tensei 4, and the soon to be released Xenoblade Chronicles. But what else is there past these? Anyone got any recommendations for me?

But what else is there past these? Anyone got any recommendations for me?

I strongly recommend;
Fire Emblem Awakening, one of the finest strategy RPGs I've ever played
Mario 3D Land is a very meaty game, loads of stuff in it. Took me about 30 hours to 100% it!
New Mario 2 is okay, doesn't do anything amazing but a joy from start to finish still.
Animal Crossing weird village building/mayor game.
Fantasy Life like Animal Crossing but with a big RPG behind it.
Monster Hunter 4 and again like Fantasy Life but with even more RPG behind it.
Smash Bros huge huge fighter/brawler game, so much content.
Bravely Default is a real refreshing JRPG. Lots of new ideas in this.

There's more but those are what I've recently been playing. Other good uns: Starfox 3D, Kid Icarus, Pokemon, Kirby Triple...

Just curious if you guys buy the new 3ds games the old fashioned way or do you download them? How many games could you even fit on the sd card before you would have to delete some to fit on new ones and I'm assuming if you did delete one, you could get it back using the original code if you wanted too, right?

Cool, thanks. I'll keep those in mind.

A question about Mario 3D Land, though. One of the reasons why I don't love Mario games as much as I used to is that they've become far too easy as of late. It isn't just because I've become better, either. I played Mario 64 recently, and getting all the stars is still as tough a challenge as it was back in the day. That challenge is almost completely absent in the later games in the series.

So is 3D Land pretty tough in places, or is it something you breeze through, have a bit of fun with, then put away?

First half of the game is kind of easy, the second half though... I almost didn't make it. But that's only if you're going after completing it. A lot of people are happy just reaching the final boss!
If you've got a Wii U, Mario 3D World and Luigi U are proper sinister games in terms of difficulty.

Depends on the size of the card. I've got a 32gb in mine (supports 64gb) and I'm nowhere near filling it and I've had a 3DS since launch. Games are 500mb-2gb, but few go that big.

Cool. I'll grab it after I work my way through my big list 'o must plays.

Also, what do you think of Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon? It looks kinda neat.

I'm afraid i'm one of the people really disappointed about this. I'm not getting the XL, it just doesn't work for me and it's too big. Also the colors available are kinda ugly and I REALLY wanted the white one. I'm just holding out to see if they ever release the normla ones..

It sucks because my normal 3DS is broken ;_;. I can't play any of the new titles.

I wonder if the feedback people are giving is making any difference. I did send a feedback email. There's a Reddit thread here where people are contacting Nintendo.

I prefer the "old fashioned way" for the sole reason that cartridges are not "node-locked" to an account or device. This is to say that a cart can be used with multiple devices, whether those be family members or friends or whatever. And they can of course be re-sold. They have nostalgic value; when I was a kid it was very common to trade cartridges with friends temporarily in order to get exposure to more content. Carts obviously have downsides which are very similar to the downsides that physical music CDs or tapes have versus MP3s ;-)

I only buy digital variants from the eShop if for some reason I can't find (or am too impatient to look for) the cart version.

SD cards will still get tons of use for game patches and such, granted you won't need a huge SD card. I use a 16GB with more than enough room to spare, but I also only have about a dozen 3DS titles.

I find certain games work better being always to hand, like Smash Bros, Animal Crossing, Fantasy Life. I'll definitely pick up Monster Hunter 4 on download too. But when Nintendo do those Collectors Editions like Majoras Mask and Pokemon I'd rather get those than downloads.

Is there still any value in reselling these days? When The Last Of Us PS4 was announced I sold my PS3 version but only made 1/4 of the original price back. I sold a bunch of Vita games too and they were 1/5 the original, heh. Maybe I've just had bad luck with it.

I prefer to buy all of my games "the old fashioned way" so I have a case and artwork I can look at/display/admire my collection. Just not the same feeling scrolling through a list of digital games...

Legitimate point. Another weak spot for carts is that they can be forgotten....at home -- or left someplace else entirely. The only way one could forget a digital copy... well, it's harder to do for sure.

If I didn't have a need to share games with other people, digital would be much more attractive.

No (though I'm sure GameStop-esque stores would state otherwise) but it's an option nonetheless. Personally I would trade a cart for another game (with a friend or something) before selling. Or pass down to kids in the family.

Donkey Kong 3DS offers really tough but rewarding game.

Also if your after a really tough game Wii u, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze represents the biggest challenge Nintendo have given us in years. Very tough but not unfairly so.

Wasn't going to rush to buy one until there was a new game I wanted but then everyone raved about Zelda MM. Of course they are all sold out. If anyone is trying to find one, I got one on Walmart.com. Shipping to home takes about a week.

I've been increasingly wanting to pick up a 3ds, but with the whole college thing, it's not really in the budget right now. I'm curious to try out the new Pokemon games and relive some memories, try Zelda games for the first time (I've never played one), and of course smash on the go. Ahhh well, maybe some day.

Woot my New 3DS XL came today. I got the new red one and I think it looks really nice. My 2DS seems pathetic next to the XL, lol!

I haven't done anything on the XL besides initial setup yet. On one of those steps it tests the 3d on you and it was pretty much impossible for me to focus on the image. I'm not too excited about that. Maybe it'll be better in game. Oh well it's a shame but I'll still be happy with it even if I have to leave 3d off.

Now I can get back to finishing up Pokemon Y!!! :)

Congrats! -- it's a fun device for sure. The 3D does take some getting used to and doesn't work for everyone. I have a hard time with it and game with it off more than on. Like having the 3D option regardless.

I've had the N3DSXL for a week and there's at least one kind of annoying thing about it that I just ran into last night while playing Ocarina of Time. First off I have to admit that I'm kind of babied by auto-saving games of current generation consoles. On the 3DS, with this game in particular, manual saving is required and admittedly I don't do so often. I take it for granted that a game isn't going to crash & that I have enough juice in the battery to play for a couple hours and then save at the end.

Last night Ocarina "crashed" on me twice. Or so I thought. I got the "Software Has Closed" screen, with the option to power off the unit.

I frantically searched the Internet for clues and I came across some random dude's angry post (I'll dig up the link and post below), and had a sigh of relief.

It wasn't the game crashing -- it was my posture, and grip on the device. I hold the N3DSXL with my left/right pinkies along the bottom edge for leverage. When I then go to use the L or R buttons, I wind up sort of squeezing the device between my index and pinky.

Well.... that power button is along that bottom right edge, and for me, it's apparently easy to press accidentally. Hitting the power button immediately closes whatever software was open. The power button has to be pressed-and-held, but not for very long.

So I lost my progress twice, fortunately I wasn't very far along.

Sadly I will be returning the N3DSXL after a week of wanting to love it. I just don't dig the form factor. It's too chunky. I'm holding out hope for a release of the New 3DS here in NA. The decision not to release it here doesn't make sense at all; I bet faceplates alone would be a cash cow. (Yes I saw the Reddit post about contacting NoA and conveying such feelings to them; done twice now.)

Reverting back to a normal 3DS from a New 3DS is a pain in the arse. System transfers are not permitted from newer hardware to older hardware. Fortunately I have no data on the N3DSXL I care about, but I do need my NNID moved over. I had to call Nintendo to request they move my NNID from the N3DSXL to the 3DS, which they are now stating can take up to a week. Pretty large window for what likely equates to a few database transactions lolz.

The 3D does seem to be much better in-game. I can barely tell a difference with it turned all the way up in Pokemon Y (guess it's only there for battles and some cutscenes) but at least I don't feel like I'm going cross-eyed like in the initial setup. Must have been an issue with the pure white background with black text.

bummer. I'm liking my new XL more than my 2DS.

There's hardly any 3D in the Pokemon games. Very few environments use it, and it slows down battles considerably (even on the New 3DS).

I still think the best 3D was found in Ocarina of Time, and now Majora's Mask. Wonderful depth to it.

Have you played through Majora's Mask? I have a problem I was hoping you or anyone else could help me with. I missing how you are supposed to deal with time resetting or the world ending or whatever happens in three days. When the moon crashed, the game almost restarts and if you have to do everything over, how do you progress? Do you just hit home when that happens and restart from the saved game but if you do that don't you just have to do all that other stuff over again and wind up running out of time all over again? I missing something here and the guides I'm reading online isn't really clearing this up for me. Any advice to get past this brain fart would be much appreciated....

If you talk to the citizens and follow the directions given to you during the first three day cycle you'll eventually wind up at the top of the clock tower were you'll learn the Song of Time which is what you use to go back to the dawn of the first day.

So I did that and what I do now is right before the third day ends, I play that song and start the three days over without losing any of the stuff I did and earned, right? Thank you
