The irony is that Apple used to pride themselves on selling smaller phones than the competition. Now, it seems like Apple is ashamed of ever having sold such "puny" devices.

What makes you say that? They still sell the smaller 5s. And when did they ever pride themselves on "smaller" phones. iPhone was among the largest when it was first released.

Apple makes thinner and lighter than others. Much different than smallest.

Apple haven't just given up resizing the same 7 year old idea which was 5 years ahead of its time in the day - they're reissuing the old resized stuff. That's not just retro. It's smart-retro. Gotta give em credit when it comes to misdirecting the public. Move over Dynamo! Tim Cook is THE new master of illusion. Respect, man! :D

I definitely understand your points, but you (and probably most of us on these forums) do not represent the entire market. A lot of people are perfectly happy to use the device as a phone and to stream music, read mail and exchange messages, check the news, shop for something, pay a few bills, that's about it. 32GB to them is like 128GB to me, like... overkill. I have tended to like 64GB on a phone but I haven't found 32GB a hassle with the 5c and I might even get a 16GB 4" phone (whatever Apple decides to name it) after I see the actual specs. The 64GB I used to favor was from before I had a mini iPad, and before music streaming.

This is a dumb argument. The 64GB model didn't just magically lower in price. Storage is cheaper than it used to be. The only reason Apple doesn't bump the default storage to 32GB is because they don't want to lose the $100 upsell they can get on all the people who need more than 16GB but less than 64GB.

Exactly,,, and what I just posted

That will never happen... That would cannibalize the rest of the lineup. Tell the MILLIONS of people to stop purchasing the 16GB and you'd have something. But the one percent of one percent who complain here on MacRumours will not change Apple's business model,,, especially when it costs them a quarter to raise the storage from 16 to 64. Say it all you want...

I did miss this form factor when the 6 came out. It took some getting used to, but I don't think i could ever have a smaller screen than the Plus size.

Lots of people want small phones. Do you know why there is so much demand for large phones? Because no one makes a small phone that people want, they are either gimped on specs or are from some no-name manufacturer that no one knows about.

I strongly disagree that they make them low end because of the size. Look how thin they are able to make phones now, the ability to make small phones isn't that difficult. Most of what takes up large phones is simply the display and a bigger battery. The actual circuitry of a phone is very small and could easily fit in a 4" body. Also, seeing as how Sony has a 4K display in a 5.x" phone proves that you can get much higher PPI than what Apple currently offers. Besides, the display is the biggest battery culprit. Smaller display = ability to use a smaller battery. Besides, Android phones have twice the capacity of Apple phones in roughly the same size, so it's possible to get larger batteries in that form factor.

You need a bigger battery to power that screen, run that more powerful processor, and power all of the other features of the phone. You can only fit a small battery in a 4" phone, at least when it's compared to a 5.5" phone. You and I both know Apple won't make the phone thicker to accommodate a bigger battery.

Perhaps it's "lazy engineering," but it certainly has caught on because people want bigger screens and better battery life. 4" phones offer mediocre battery life and a screen where you have to peck at the letters just to type a text message.

When you say "people" you mean "I" - you're talking about you and your experience and thats fine. The battery life is the same between phones as 95% of it is screen size, they're both rated for the same time and over all id say the 5s used to last longer than my 6s. Either way all phones last about a day - a larger battery is irrelevant to me unless its going to last two full days without a recharge, otherwise you've got to recharge it at night anyway it might as well have 5% left as 50% left when its got to go on the charger to last all day the next day anyway.

BTW... the prices you quote are Retail vs Street price... two very different things. Besides... this is all rumors at this point.
Last time I checked they don't sell iPhones out of the back of the truck, so NO there's no "street price"
Every iPhone you buy will be retail price.

People in emerging markets have long moved on to devices larger than 5" and those have average selling price of $300.
So indeed Apple will fail if they do release this 4" phone at $500

Replacing the A7 with the A8 would barely even make any difference. Look at the benchmarks for the iPhone 5s vs the iPhone 6. Even if it's for the resolution differences, the 6th gen iPod touch with its A8 performs exactly the same as the 5s on an A7 in benchmarks and real use.

The performance gap is nothing compared to the A6 to A7 or the A8 to A9. I wouldn't believe they would make the effort for almost no difference.

It should be given an A9 with 2 GB or RAM and be called the iPhone 5X instead. It could be sold for even $149 rather than $99 if they can't put an A9 for that cheap.

Actually I used to have to charge my iPhone 5S twice a day because the battery stunk. There's a reason Samsung came out with the "wall huggers" commercial.

It's not really THAT under powered is it? A8 is still really good.
It's not as good as the newest models. They should let people choose based on the screen size that they want and have the other specs as close to equal as possible. The only one that reasonably should be different is battery capacity as that is mostly dependent on physical size.

As I said, you'd have a smaller display which consumes less power. Besides, the processor, radios, RAM, and storage are more efficient now than they were a year ago, and keep on improving and consuming less power, so that's not a reason.

A 5.5" phone with larger battery would win in standby life, but actual use when the screen is on would be similar.

In a perfect world they'd put a severely underclocked A9 in there, at 1.1GHz or there abouts.

That'd keep the spec nerds happy (As it has a A9 written in the spec list...), it would have great performance on par with the 6s, and would also have a great battery life due to the small display and underclocked processor, although for margin purposes they will put a faster clockrate A8 in there. Spec sheet nerds can cry all they want but the only thing that will take a hit is battery life (and not phone speed), but it will be the same as we're used to so around 7hrs screen on time.

Low range specs and paltry 4" screen for $500? I expect this phone to flop dramatically. At these prices you can get high-end Android phone with 32GB base storage.
The 4" screen is a selling point. Where could I get an android with that small of a screen and halfway recent specs for any price? The low end specs are what will hurt any 4" iPhone, not the screen size.

Everybody, including yourself, knows that your hopes will be disappointed :)

Stock market disagrees. 2016 will be the first year when iPhones decline in sales.
Can't wait for "I told you so" moment by the end of the month when Apple releases sales numbers.

It's actually great news for us consumers for Apple sales to decline, that will motivate Apple to include more incentives to upgrade and maybe make base storage 32gb. If sales drop dramatically, that may even prompt Apple to lower the price. How can that be bad for us?

I got you, but apps are huge now. The larger cameras get (in MP) the larger those files get. it's as if everything you do on the device "costs" more in terms of storage, yet we are left with the same. I love streaming, but right now I can't stream my apps, or audible audiobooks. Even when I want to "stream" tv shows/movies from iTunes, they will stream (To play), but download to my device. (DUMB). So then I have to worry about deleting that, etc. 32 GB would just remove much of the hassle.

Oh this is exciting! If this is a new device that will retain an audio jack then this might be my next phone once my 6 dies. Seems like a good size too. Then all I'd need is a 128gb option and I'm set.
