2. When I shut down the AppleTV, it turns off my TV but not my home theater receiver. :(
Does your receiver support HDMI-CEC? If it does, make sure HDMI-CEC is turned on in the settings of your receiver. If it doesn't support HDMI-CEC, the Apple TV will never be able to turn off your receiver.

We're cord cutters and get all our TV though two Apple TVs and love them for the most part. That remote is an utter disgrace to UX though. There's basically nothing right about it.

1) Nearly impossible to tell which way it's facing without looking. Check
2) Horribly sensitive* touchpad that you're constantly touching unintentionally because of 1). Check
3) *actually only in some apps. In others it's like wrestling a bear. (I'm looking at you, Playstation Vue). Check
4) The perfect size for falling in the cracks of a couch. Check

It's horrible in every aspect.

I’ve used my friend’s Apple TV remote several time. Points 1 and 2 are spot on. I want a new Apple TV and am pretty sure I’ll get the new one. I just hope they’ve thought the remote out better this time. I love my 3rd generation remote. I realize this one can’t be as minimalistic, but it could be improved.

I really like my Apple TV. The remote, however, is a piece of ****. Who the **** designed that thing. On the first day of using it, I lost count how many times I picked it up the wrong way and missed the touch pad area and jumped ahead in what I was watching. So frustrating.

All iterations of the ATV have been terrible. I just use my phone.

sooo... is anyone else worried the price of this ATV may just climb to a ridiculous price?
Yep because I'm ready for a new one to go with the rest.

The latest Apple TV remote sucks. Can't believe I have to use a $749 phone to remotely control a $169 video player.
I have mixed feelings about the Siri remote, but I hate the Remote App.

I am not sure what the apply of it is. It is way too basic. No tv/home button, no d-pad, same crappy swiping as the touch pad on the Siri remote.

I guess the best part about it is using a keyboard to type in stuff.

Strange that so many people dislike the Apple TV 4's remote. I find it be the best remote in my house, totally intuitive, quick and responsive. Tactile feedback, may be a nice addition. I don't need to replace my Apple TV, but I'm sure I'll buy the new one. This Apple "hobby" just keeps getting better and better, in my view. Your millage will vary.

The control centre widget in iOS 11 has a TV button, if it's any consolation.

4K Apple TV looks like it may be the best thing out of this event.! I sure hope so, it's the device I've been waiting for meaningful improvement out of for the past two generations.

The frustrating part for me it it just needs obvious (IMHO) tweaks to greatly improve it.

- make it a bit bigger and heavier to make it easier to handle
- make it wedge shaped so it can be easily identified which direction its facing (or some other way to do so)
- reject accidental touch pad input.

It just feels like it was not battle tested.

It is good, what is even more ridiculous is that people come here to complain about something that they don't need to use.

I think the remote is fairly ok, with some minor drawbacks:

- Could use a contoured bottom. This way you know you've picked it up in the correct orientation while not looking / using it in the dark.

- Could be a bit larger.

- Could use a number pad and/or some additional function buttons.

Let's get one thing straight though: the Apple TV remote isn't a cable TV remote, so it doesn't need to be that big. But most remotes can be divided into 3 sections: the number pad, the volume/channel/directional pad area, and an area devoted to other functions (usually product or service specific for quick launching).

The Apple TV remote doesn't really need a D-pad, since it has the touch area. Same with the channel button, since it's not a cable TV remote. That leaves the number pad and function button areas. Both of these could be addressed at the same time if Apple took the Touchbar concept from MacBook and re-purposed it for a remote. Require a number pad? Then the screen switches to a number pad. Otherwise, it has quick launch icons for the apps you use, iTunes, Netflix, etc.

and yet it can't do a local search on your drive for non-itunes media.......

Hec, I'd be happy if it would just do a local search FOR iTunes media... the Home Shared media, in iTunes, that is so easily displayed a full list of when browsing "Computers". It already has the metadata cached... just let me search on it!

Or you can use any remote you want but i guess it is easier to complain
I can use the Apple remote or the app. Kinda missing what other remote you're speaking to in your post. Maybe you're OK with the finicky sliding on the touch pad, and always picking it up in the wrong orientation because it's almost to tell by touch alone if you're holding the remote in the proper orientation.

You must have an easy to swipe password for the random login screens that pop up every 2-4 weeks. Typing in a 21 character password is horrendously painful compared to using the keyboard on my phone.

Maybe you don't have the latest Apple TV? I'd go back to the earlier edition's remote in a heartbeat.

That Siri remote is like a pretty woman but stupid and dumb. I tried my best to like maybe because it a beautiful piece. But every time I use nothing but a piece of sh**. I am not kidding leaving it beside you on the couch while watching ruins the experience of watching your shows and movies.

There's only one double-height button on the controller. Right-hand side = correct orientation. You can either look to check or just feel the buttons on the controller.

Just watch, we're gonna get hosed.

$199 for 32GB 4k Version
$249 for 64GB 4k Version

Thanks. Yep, I'm aware of that but I still don't consider pseudo braille reading a good experience in trying to use a remote in dim lighting.

If ALL they did was designed it so I didn't pick it up upside down every time, I'd be happy
