Its an insult to call those ancient relics computers. All of my current Windows PCs wipe the floor with the current Mac Pro.

Theres only 3 products Apple sells. iPhone iPads and Watch/bands. The rest are irrelevant

You sir are correct on all counts. I dumped my iMac and MBP and bought a PC... aside from the added performance, I can further upgrade it when I feel it's necessary. Now that is truly green. I still enjoy my iPhone and iPad though.

Nothing wrong here and in the case of current Apple products right through from iPhones to the Mac range older is better.

1) Like the iPhone 5s the iPhone SE has a superior more robust design.
2) The iPhone 4s and iPad 2 remain well and truly up there with the latest offerings.
3) No Headphone jack on current iPhone models. Whats more important having a waterproof phone or being able to listen to music without the expense of Bluetooth headphones? For many this is a no brainer.

The Retina MacBook Pro has lost

1) Function Keys
2) ThunderBolt
3) USB 3.0
4) Magsafe

all replaced by the grossly inferior TouchBar and USB-C. That much is borne out quite plainly by the number of docking solutions available to make the latest Retina MacBook Pro anywhere close to useful.

In short Older Apple products are better.

So I guess the iPad's no longer a premium tablet and the iPad Pro is taking its place, albeit at a higher price point.

I'm ambivalent. A lower priced iPad with better CPU's probably great for the average buyer.
For me, the trade-off in screen, thickness and weight aren't worth it and my next upgrade will likely be the Pro.

Of course it's for local work. And coding on the iPad with remote shell via the iPad has never taken so much time and with so many typing errors, compared to years on a normal system. It's really not the same. Not for daily use, multiple sessions and tabs open .. Why am I defending myself?

I have no idea. I was just presenting you with a potential solution to your problem. Personally I use it quite a bit for ssh-ing into my servers and Raspberry Pi's where it's actually a lovely experience.

Air 2 combined the laminated display of the Pro and the same size and weight at a lower price point. That was a true mid ranger. Apple has effectively eliminated the mid range and offered an low end model from 2013. Heck the A8X from the Air 2 actually beats the iPad in multi core and that tablet is 3 years old. If Apple has made up its mind to offer different products at different price points they should stop destryoing the price brackets they created.

The Air 2 was actually selling at 299 when it was discontinued.Apple should have offered an updated iPad Air 2 with an A9 and pushed the older model to 325

Not only has the competition revolutionised the innards they have revolutinsed the design. The ball is now in Apple's court to effectively price the iphone Edition against the S8. BTW that claim of yours of Apple never removing features has now been proved false as the iPad compromises a lot of features vs the Air 2
I don't see any new revolutionary design or revolutionary innards. Just rehashed variations of what sharp started years ago with design.

And if you're wrong about "my claim" at least be honest about it. I was clear it was in regards to flagships.

As far as what Apple should have done vs what they did says a random internet poster? Maybe some info you're not privy to.

Irrelevant to you only. And has been shown "wipes the floor" is not really the case, should that video be trotted out again?

and Thunderbolt is still there, too.

Yes ThunderBolt 3 not the more universal ThunderBolt 2 of which is more common causing the user to shell out more cash on convertors.

How is the TouchBar anywhere near as useful for the power user used to function keys?

I tried the new MacBook Pro for a week and couldn't wait to get back to my 2012 15" model.

You can't tell a difference in performance from 5s to 7+??? It was absolutely night and day for me.

Not so much that it's night and day. All the apps I use load about the same (except games which are substantially faster), websites load almost the same speed, the UI is about as smooth etc. I'm not saying there's no performance difference, there clearly is with the A7 vs A10, but it's just not very big to me. The only thing I really noticed that is kind of "night and day"ish is that things stay in RAM for a really long time.

Considering I've been using the function keys for stuff like playback, volume control, and the like. Using the touchbar took some getting used to. But there's little things I've come to appreciate about it, like being able to use quick look on a. file without having to right click it, or having a screenshot button right on the bar without having to remember the keyboard shortcuts. It's also nice to have sliders for brightness, volume, and color control.

Honestly, I haven't really missed my function keys since I've been using it, But I recognize that it might not be for everybody. Calling it useless is blatantly wrong though.

And Thunderbolt 3 is already more universal than Thunderbolt 2 ever was. I can't name any other laptop or desktop that had TB2 compatibility that wasn't Apple, whereas USB-C and Thunderbolt-3 adoption on many other systems is already more widespread. Right now it sucks because we need adapters, but as USB-C adoption grows it'll be irrelevant. I've only had to buy one adapter after using this (USB-C to USB-A, for an external DVD drive), and I can definitely say that it hasn't gotten in the way of my work.

And before you say that I"m not a "PRO USER", the only reason I bought this Laptop was for graphic design work, and I've been using it every day since January. If that's not your definition of Pro then whatever.

So it's nearly identical to the iPad Air 2 then, NOT the original iPad Air. A bit clickbaitish, no, @Joe Rossignol ?

You don't have an argument at all here and this article isn't click bait by any means, thus The title states the new iPad is basically an Air One, essentially it almost being physically identical with a few exceptions with the wifi module, soldering and adhesive. Which makes to sense to use the Air One as an example, with the same casing.

Second, @Joe Rossignol was comparing the specifications to the Air 2, which is a fair comparison because the new 9.7 iPad is replacing the Air 2, which also has similar internals/specifications to the Air 2, with the exception of the laminate display.

Both the Air One and Air 2 are applicable, being the new iPad 9.7 combines genetics from both iterations.

iPad S.E. (Sucker's Edition)

Reminds me of renaming the iPhone 5s, doubling the price, and selling it as a new product.

Really, SE Lower Price, has a better camera, faster processor, more memory, more storage, to name a few. Our family has both, the SE is far superior.

In other words, after 2 years they've been able to make 1 laptop and re-release their iPhone and iPad.
Yeah, big plans.. can't wait for that TV and Car they're working on..

Yep, it's turned into a fashion company now. Pro users? WHAT? .. no cli for you! who needs a file system.. get out!

Hey, they sure innovated their asses off on those $50 watch bands.

I don't need to have an argument here. The MR headline simply doesn't align with the facts presented in the article.

Sure, the new iPad looks similar to the older iPad, but the newer iPad has a faster processor, a different display, and (as per the article) most other specs are identical to the iPad Air 2.

The new iPad certainly seems to have much more in common with the Air 2 than the Air.

Yes really.

iPhone SE (first generation) cost double what the 5s cost. Almost the same hardware, almost 2 years old, double the price and give it a new name and keep selling it.

Sucker's Edition.

they are masters at getting rid of old stockpiled parts/equipment....but Apple magically calls it innovation ;)

They actually called this iPad "Flat-out Fun"

It funny, every Apple product announcement I see pages of comments similar to "Too Thin", "Pointless to shave 1.3mm" for nothing "I DON'T CARE ABOUT THIN, just make it slightly thinker with a good battery and cheaper"

Well, that's what Apple has done, made a slightly thinker iPad, with a big battery, and guts of one-model-ago iPhone, for cheap...and they get falsely accused of claiming innovation.

I replaced my 5 year old's perfectly functioning iPad 2 (yeah, 6 years old!), handed her the iPad "Flat-out Fun" under her own Apple ID...Perfect.

The iPad mini is getting replaced by the phablets anyway, like the iPhone 7s and 7s plus (also only a processor swap, lol). Beats me why they haven't done the same thing with Macs. Minimal effort and customers would have appreciate it. Too late for that now.

I really can't help but think that Apple is intending to move beyond the Mac. Push the iPad as a PC replacement, then either drop the Mac line completely one day or give it the Mac Pro silent treatment.

Which would suck for many reasons, not least given how little effort Apple puts into the iPad, especially the OS.

Jobs would never have retrograded a product line just to compete on price. That was antithetical to his entire philosophy on tech business.

Just another example of how Cook's Apple, Inc. is most certainly not Jobs' Apple Computer.

I disagree. Steve Jobs was not an elitist. If you look at the beginning the Steves were both about bringing technology to the people who would appreciate it. They wanted to produce something that would be priced reasonably, work better, and more importantly inspire people.

I don't know whether anyone will consider this version of the iPad inspirational. Do you think it would a better choice than the Android or Windows tablet at the same price point? Is it at a price point where more people can make use of it?

I truly believe that the more people who get a chance to use an Apple product the better off we all will be. The user experience in iOS vs Android or OSX vs Windows has for years been a win for Apple. Most people don't get a chance to experience it because of the financial barriers. This iPad may knock down that barrier for quite a few people.

Nah, I think Tim's just trying to position the iPad as a low-end alternative, and the iPad Pro as a MBP add-on. His main focus seems to be trying to expand or maintain the ecosystem by making the products work with each other. As to how well he's doing this, I'll let you make up your mind.

Which is ironic, given how hard Apple seems to be promoting and advertising the iPad these days. Maybe we will see some major software updates in iOS 11?

This is different - It's thicker because Apple has decided to cut corners with the display. Battery life isn't any better. I criticise Apple for making things thinner at the expense of other things, yet making this thicker didn't help anything but Apple's margins.

They'll really have to do something interesting. The iPad was practically ignored in iOS 10, and barely touched in most versions preceding it. Not to mention lack of updates across the line. Hard to want to buy old tech at premium prices with the knowledge that it won't last as long as a Mac.
