We don't need to see the sales figures to know that going back to a non laminated display is about cost saving as the laminated display is more expensive.
The thing could still flop, iPad sales have been falling and there's zero inclination that this will reverse the trend. I'm not even defending Apple here, but the sales figures haven't come in yet, and there's reason to believe that even with the price cut it could still under perform.

Yes really.

iPhone SE (first generation) cost double what the 5s cost. Almost the same hardware, almost 2 years old, double the price and give it a new name and keep selling it.

Sucker's Edition.
A year ago I paid $399 for my SE at Apple. So you are saying, 5S new costs $200. You are correct when on 2 year contract, actual price $599. You understand that price was subsidized. Twice the processor speed, 4 times better camera, double the memory (5s 1gb), and double the storge space(5s 16gb) $200 less then 5s. I have recipts, show me yours for the 5s.

Not buying your spin. You sound jaded. Not sure why.

The SE's internals are all but identical to the 6S.
Who is spinning?

iPhone 5S = $199 4" phone released in 2013
iPhone SE = $399 for the same 4" phone in 2016

3-year old display, case, battery, modem.

Still running old-generation processor, old-generation chipset, old-generation home button.

Why double the price. Because they know people will pay it

Sucker's Edition.

Might want to get your facts straight.
This is from AT&T for the 5. Same for the 5s:
Note the no contract prices. Tell me again how the 5s cost less then the SE, just to be factual.
"It's official - Apple's new iPhone 5 is available for pre-order this Friday, 14 September 2012. Pricing will start at $199 for the 16GB model, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for a 64GB iPhone 5 - as long as a you sign a new, two-year contract. If you purchase an iPhone 5 off contract, a 16GB model will cost you $649, the 32GB model $749, and $849 for the 64GB iPhone 5 (according to AT&T's website.)"

There are few if any phones currently on the market from any vendor that aren't evolutionary designs with a combination of old and new parts.

However, I realize this is most likely pearls before swine, as I had just taken a look at your post history. I wish you all the best on your crusade. I hope it makes you happy.

The innovation is pay less - get less, which is opposite of pay more - get more. It's a great strategy by Apple to attract new customers.
So offering cheapo stuff today offers an excuse for even less in the future ?
Go figure: there is billions funding and there is 10.000 patents lurking to accomplish 1000x more than they currently do, but why bother as long as there is oistriches like you who are OK with structural mediocrisy...
Next product: MacPro Performa: I expect you to be happy queueing for a 68030 pizza box. Soo exciting !
It will have the fastest dial-out modem ever...

If there is Google on your island, try search for Xiaomi or Huawei and a new, bezel-free world will open itself.

Can't wait for all the lawsuits for people to get their content out of the Apple ecosystem. That's the only thing holding us in to this mediocre crap.
[doublepost=1490913581][/doublepost]And I forgot, remember when Gil Amelio was out of ideas? He was an innovator compared to Timmy.

If you want to go downmarket sure. But I'll believe the Apple mgmt team has a solid strategy even if MR posters don't agree with it.

Innovation... lol

Yeah... iteration is the name of the game, no longer innovation. Tim Cooks apple is all about margins from supply chain: - if you can sell the same part for 5-6 years at an industry leading premium, thats one huge profit. Is why apples stock is at an all time high, investors love that stuff.

Didn’t Steve say that Apple was in the business of making the best possible products, not in the business of racing to the bottom?
If we assume the original Air was the best possible product when first released, and this is basically a refurbished oAir, then technically...

Why do people get so up in arms about Apple catering to the middle-tier market with these new products? They're DESIGNED to be cheaper and thus less "innovative". I think it's great that they're releasing NEW products to satisfy the middle-tier, rather than simply lower the cost of their outdated devices.

So do the customers it seems.

I'm not sure what all the complaining is about. Apple have released an updated, faster iPad at a low cost. In Australia, this bad boy is only $469, I for one am very happy.

EDIT: Also, this obviously has environmental recycling benefits, as Apple can re-use the old iPad Air aluminum cases, right?

Nope. This iPad has no mute switch.

Android was great then, and it is AWESOME today.... iOS was Awesome back then making Android look like it was meh, but ios is still Awesome today.

They let Android catch up...it is Apple's fault if they lost the margin.
Which Android tablet competes on quality and size with this $329 iPad? That's the point of this product.

I'm familiar & prefer my devices to not be manufactured by the Chinese government or the U.S.'s largest advertising firm. :D

Your aforementioned manufacturers don't make each new handset from scratch each year either by the way.

Besides, I prefer evolutionary improvements that actually improve a product in lieu of throwing **** on the wall and seeing what sticks. Did you enjoy your 3D Amazon phone or your Facebook phone? ;)

Actually the SE only shares the processor, Retina flash, and rear camera from the 6S. Things that the 6S has that the SE does not have:

  • RetinaHD screen and everything that entails
  • Upgraded front-facing camera
  • 3D Touch
  • TouchID 2nd gen
  • Wifi with MIMO
  • LTE up to 300mbps (only up to 150 on SE)
  • Barometer

Nope. This iPad has no mute switch.

That's not exactly true. The volume switches act as a mute switch when held down briefly. It's not as instantaneous as the mute switch but pretty good. It's also not as convenient because the volume has to be restored to the level it was, manually, but also not a huge problem. I can see why they would remove it.

I've never used my "mute switch" on the iPad as such, but only as a rotation lock, which can now be done via the swipe up dock. Again, not as convenient. Is there also a mute button the dock under iOS 10? I'm stuck at iOS 9 on my iPad 3.

But one MUST remember that this is coming from the same company that hides the power button to the iMac behind the screen.

iFixit has shared a brief teardown of Apple's new 9.7-inch iPad unveiled last week, and unsurprisingly, the tablet looks just as much like an original iPad Air on the inside as it does on the outside.

ipad-5-vs-ipad-air-1.jpg

In the side-by-side photo above, iFixit noted the original iPad Air on the left has a slightly larger Wi-Fi module compared to the new 9.7-inch iPad on the right, but otherwise the tablets look virtually identical.

iFixit said the new 9.7-inch iPad remains difficult to repair due to the front panel being glued to the device and strong adhesive holding everything in place. One plus is that the battery is not soldered to the logic board.

The new 9.7-inch iPad is all about price. It's the cheapest new tablet that Apple has ever sold, starting at $329, yet with a brighter display and a faster A9 processor compared to the now-discontinued iPad Air 2.

The fifth-generation iPad, as it is officially known, is also somewhat thicker and heavier than the iPad Air 2 since it lacks a fully laminated display with anti-reflective coating in order to keep costs down.

ipad-5-teardown.jpg

The tablet's tech specs are otherwise identical to the iPad Air 2, including a display resolution of 2,048-by-1,536 at 264 PPI, 8-megapixel rear iSight camera, 1.2-megapixel front FaceTime camera, two speakers, Lightning connector, 3.5mm headphone jack, Touch ID with Apple Pay, and Bluetooth 4.2.

The new 9.7-inch iPad can be ordered now on Apple's website in the United States and dozens of other countries.

Apple said the new 9.7-inch iPad is also available to purchase at select Apple Stores, authorized resellers, and carrier stores starting this week in more than 20 countries, including the U.S., Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the U.K.

This is different - It's thicker because Apple has decided to cut corners with the display. Battery life isn't any better. I criticise Apple for making things thinner at the expense of other things, yet making this thicker didn't help anything but Apple's margins.
The lack of screen lamination/antiglare is a regression from the Air 2, but the A9 absolutely smokes the A8X in single core/multi core performance, really everywhere except graphics performance where it's a dead head (the X in the A8X is that third GPU where the A9 has two). And these will be retailed at less than $300 all day long.

What Apple has done is built an iPad with separate (and cheaper-to-replace) glass and LCD, with as up-to-date CPU as anything out there -- and Touch ID -- that is going to be good for iOS updates far into the future. (As an original iPad mini owner running iOS 9.3.5, I can vouch for the importance of this.)

This is an iPad for the masses (schools, kids, grandparents) where value for money is the key driving factor, and as I said in an earlier post, there isn't any competing tablet of this quality and performance on the market anywhere near this price.

Frankly, I'm not convinced these iPads are going to help Apple's bottom line at this price point, they don't seem to me to have Apple's normal margins. Though they might just stem the decline in total iPad sales numbers, and that's probably more important right now as the margins to Apple.

I'd like a little more screen real estate even at the expense of size. However, for most, there's no need for it on a phone that size.
  • Upgraded front-facing camera
For those that don't take a lot of selfies, it's unnecessary.
  • 3D Touch
I can't for the life of me figure out why I need this. Maybe some day, when Apple rolls out a must have feature. Again, not an issue for many.
  • TouchID 2nd gen
1st Gen TouchID is plenty fast. I was surprised to learn it could go faster, and not sure I'd want it to in some instances.
  • Wifi with MIMO
Tech that's not widely implemented, nor likely to be in the next few years.
  • LTE up to 300mbps (only up to 150 on SE)
Most real world LTE doesn't come close to that.
  • Barometer
Nice to have, but not essential, especially for those who already have an Apple Watch, or don't care about fitness.

They're not, they're the iPad equivalent of the SE designed to extend the halo of Apple services to a broader audience.

My point to phillytim (where he said "Apple can re-use the old iPad Air aluminum cases, right?") was that the cases aren't the same due to the lack of a physical mute switch, and so these aren't reused/recycled iPad Air cases.
