9to5 has a great track record so this is now pretty much confirmed. So right now you can get a 64GB Air 2 for 599. So now 599 will get you less storage, 4 speakers, support for a $99 Apple Pencil and a A9X processor????? Wow, this is the biggest middle finger Apple has given us in a while.

Not even close to the biggest middle finger Apple has given us recently.

It's $200 less than the 12.9" iPad Pro and is exactly where I was expecting it. It adds Pencil support and the smart connector. I also think we'll see more accessories and improvements to iOS in the future that are specific to the Pro devices. Essentially we'll have "regular" iPads at 7.9" and 9.7", and iPad Pros at 9.7" and 12.9".
When the rumors began to point to the new 9.7" model being identical in specs to the iPad Pro apart from size, I anticipated a $100 price increase given that a $300 difference between the 9.7" and 12.9" models would seem extreme.

I think this would not be an issue for people except that the iPad Air 2 hasn't been updated in 519 days; Apple's got a lot of nerve continuing to charge $499 for a 519 day old tablet and asking for even more money if you want anything newer.

Even $499 in 2014 was outrageous for a 9.7" tablet; competitors are selling them for literally half that price. What Apple should have done is lower the price of the 12.9" iPad Pro by $100. So the lineup would be:

iPaid Air 2: $399 | 9.7" iPad Pro: $499 | 12.9" iPad Pro: $699

That would be far more reasonable and fair.

Wow, simply wow ... And even DOUBLE-wow when considering that we are talking about computer products here.

Really, so say Dell offers you newer and newer tech and gives you a price guarantee their model stays the same price every year no matter what, right? Las time I checked they pack more in and the base price point goes up yearly.

What fantasy world do you live in? Apple NEVER ONCE said we will always keep the iPad base price $499.

Opens Apple Store App, search for refurbished 12.9 iPad Pro, still not there, closes app, holds onto his precious Apple fund , and waits a little longer for them to appear at 15% discount. "This is the move"

Quite disappointed if true.
Why not keep the same base price ? iPads sales aren't so good to justify an increasing price...
Apple has to do something about their price policy, because their products are going out of control on this matter.
I don't want to know how much it will cost outside US (I'm guessing about a 729€ for the base 32 Gb model here in Italy ).

Since when do you pay at cost for anything in the retail world? Last time I checked the main duty of a company is to make profits.

It's not just 16gb more storage. It's likely more RAM, newer chips, newer screens that do pencil which surely aren't cheaper than the Air 2 displays, more speakers (4 vs 2). Every part has a cost.

Even if it's $40 more in parts Apple can charge $100. It needs a profit on top of cost. If you dont like it build your own tablet at cost- oh wait you cant.
You are also forgetting the A9X is now 6 months old and the A10 will be out in September. Still a middle finger to consumers.

Problem is it's more merely a "IPP is a better value so buy it" move. It's still a LOT bigger and clunky to carry around. I for one wouldn't want a 12.9" tablet even if the same $599 price at a deep discount.

So basically Apple is moving iPad to be more like Mac. You'll have 7.9/9.7 non-pro and 9.7/12.9 pro models. I don't like that the Air 2 isn't getting a price cut but if it did fewer people would upgrade to the new Pro. I'm sure Phil "upsell" Schiller thinks he can get people to spend $100 more but if they cut the Air 2 to $399 then fewer people will upgrade. And there's no way a smaller Pro would start at $499.

I don't understand how you people can be upset that they increased the price. This thing is a beast: Laptop class processor, 4GB of RAM, incredible graphics, Apple Pencil support, smart connector, 12mp camera with 4k (that is the rumor I'm most unsure about), and four speakers. At $599, that's a deal and I'll take that any day.

What I wonder is whether or not the 128GB model will be $699 or $749. But considering my iPad Air 2 128GB cost $699, I wouldn't mind spending $50 more for a powerhouse machine. Although I bet they discontinue the 128GB iPad Air 2 model.

32GB is kinda low for a "Pro" level machine, but it is what it is. At least it's not 16GB, and the people who need it can always jump up to 128GB for not a whole lot more. With twice the capacity, 50% faster processors, twice the RAM, and all the other perks—I'm honestly surprised it won't cost more than $599. A $699 or $749 price-point makes me much more likely to trade-in my iPad Air 2 on Gazelle and lock in a price. Time to go check prices, lol. My experience with them was great on my iPhone 6 Plus. Decent price and great service.

Another thing that helps: the Best Buy 10% off movers coupon. Just go to the post office if you're in the U.S. and ask for the movers packet. You don't even have to lie and say you're moving. Just ask for it. I used that to get $70 off my iPad Air 2 on launch day and I'll do the same this time if I pull the trigger.

They do? Can you please explain why? The cost of storage is falling exponentially over time, so why does Apple need to increase the price for more base storage when that storage is costing less?
Please show me the price guarantee from Apple an iPad will ALWAYS start at $499? Oh wait can't find it? Oops.

A pattern is not a guarantee.

Please come back to reality where a corporation owes nothing to you and #1 goal is profits.

Dont like it go buy a Swinesung kiddy tablet.

The iPad lineup...

iPad mini 2, iPad mini 4, iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad Pro (9.7"), iPad Pro (12.9"), each with 2-3 storage sizes, 2-3 colours, Wifi models and LTE models.

Yeah, that's not confusing at all. I feel bad for people who want to buy an iPad. The odds of you getting the one that's just right for you are pretty low.
probably the Air, and the Mini 2, are going to disappear after the event.

What makes it pro? Can you get paid to play angry birds? This is not a professional device. You can't run OSX or any real applications like Photoshop etc.
But that's all software. I have an iPP and nothing right now is taxing this hardware. We've heard next to nothing about iOS 10. I have a strong feeling iOS 10 improvements will focus a lot on iPP. This isn't just a niche one off device that Apple just threw out there for the hell of it. This is the iPad future to them. Software will follow.

Apple should come back to reality. Slowing iPad sales for how many quarters?

Now this iPad is more expensive than Mac Mini... Wow.

That being said, it sounds like a decent update - ability to use Pencil, 4 speakers. Especially those speakers will be amazing when playing games.

But will it support split screen? I'm interested in this feature the most

Put an Air 2 and iPad Pro side by side and the speed difference is almost ZERO. Too many apps are coded to run on old hardware and so many still don't take full advantage of the iPad screen and split screen , even Apples own apps! And there are even performance hiccups on the Pro. Throwing more hardware at iOS means NOTHING now.

The only thing this will do is sell more Air 2 devices.
