You seriously think that most people who say positive things about Apple work for them? Do you know anything about how "opinions" work?

Sure.

You assume that everybody has to view everything the same way you do. What if somebody doesn't think that Apple is heading in a bad direction? Wait, I already answered that question- they must work for Apple.

I'm done arguing with someone that thinks everybody has to have the same opinion as they do. Good day, and enjoy the $1,000 I'm sure you just earned with my reply.

Yep, the make excuses for and defend obviously bad and indefensible company decisions and direction (i.e., soldered memory, downgrade "refreshes", among other things) response.

Thanks, I did make more off your reply.

Actually you failed to post any players, just names, and if their range starts from $500 that's still $300 MORE than the Touch, so again you have proved nothing other than a more expensive device offers better quality, guess what a BMW is better quality than a Ford. Nothing wrong with VERY high priced portable players, but don't come on here attempting to slate the Touch because a player costing as much as an iMac has better sound quality, it's an utterly pointless comparison.

Fortunately, most literate people are capable of using internet search functions. Are you incapable of searching the company names and finding their products and price ranges, or do you need someone to do that for you? Or are you just being purposely dishonest and deceptive. A simple search will find that the companies mentioned offer similarly priced players. So you either don't know how to search the internet, or are being purposely deceptive.

Here is just one good option (of many) for those who want an actual music player that is superior to the iPod:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1160476-REG/fiio_x5_ii_x5_portable_hi_res_music.html

And I didn't say the competition only has better sound quality. In fact, I said nothing of sound quality, even though, they likely do. I mentioned music player capability, support, and storage as a music player. You are being purposely dishonest again, in what appears to be a deliberate attempt to dissuade others from discovering the superior alternatives to the inferior iPod, as a portable music player. Apologetics, followed by deceptive, misleading posts, sure raises legitimate suspicion.

Well, as you're going to resort to insults then I'm done, perhaps you should be more mature on here.

Is it the same size as the old one?

I got an OtterBox case for real cheap. But anyway...

Should be I guess? It seems to have the exact same dimensions as the 5th gen Touch, but it doesn't have that little pop out holder for the hand strap so I don't know what difference that makes.

How is that an insult? I simply commented that it's fortunate most people are capable of searching the internet, therefore, able to find the players I mentioned. Then, I simply asked whether you're capable of searching on your own, or did you require assistance.

Your responses after your searches seemed to indicate you were not having much success performing the task on your own, so my comments seem perfectly appropriate.

If the iPods are really not selling anymore I can't see the point in continuing with 3 models. Why not combine them together into one all new iPod. Take it back to its roots as a purely music device. Ideal for the gym or for storing your music collection. The iPhone/iPad can handle everything else. I would buy one for listening to my music on the train rather than having to drain my iPhone battery as happens now.

I'd like that even more, but if they aren't I like the $50 upgrade option.

My mother knows how to take photos with her iPad better than the (very simple) digital camera that she's had for years. I'm tempted to get her one of these to use as a camera.

She knows how to share photos with this (since she knows how on the iPad) and they'll automagically go to her iPad for her.

Gary
I plan to get one (probably a 64GB) primarily as a camera also. I have a 5th Generation and will probably pass (although Gazelle is offering $70 for one in excellent condition) that on to one of the younger folks in the family. By the way, most people only mention the iPod for children, but there are a lot of us senior citizens that use them also. Some just don't want a high cost phone plan or the cost of a phone. (Disclaimer, I have an iPhone 5c and a data plan, but the iPod will be easy to put in a bag as a spare camera with decent battery life and storage. And uploading photos via Wi-F is a plus.

Prediction: New iPod means iOS 9 is the last for the current one.

Before the rumours started that iOS9 was going to be more of a maintenance release than previous versions, and based on Apples previous iOS releases it was very likely (at the time) that the A5 wasn't going to be supported at all.

So yeah, I think iOS9 being last version supported on the A5 is practically a given.

I don't much care about the phone. But if it came with lte that would rock.

I'm seriously considering this as a camera for the kids. They already know how to use it. And auto uploads to flicker and Google photos.

You never know. People were saying that iOS 8 was going to be A6 plus. Depends on how many updates Apple wants to give the iPad 3. It also depends on how quickly people move off A5 devices. The iPad 2 is still the highest installed base iPad and the Mini 1 combined with the iPad 2 and 3 hold around 60 percent. Given Apple has developed its new method of "base OS then switch on features" for older devices, they may give some A5 devices another update, like how the requirements for OS X haven't changed in a while.

Dropping the Apple TV 3, iPad Mini 1, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPod Touch 5 and the iPhone 4S all at once would be dropping a lot of customers all at once. I would think that perhaps they'll support the Mini1, iPod Touch 5 and Apple TV 3 in iOS 10 and continue iOS 9 maintenance updates for a while for the other devices.

After not expecting much of anything but a color change, anything seems good. Especially the same processor as the current iPhone.
Isn't it funny how something with the "same" processor in a device significantly less pixels is clocking in much lower than a device with much more pixels? Huh interesting Apple isn't it?

If that were to happen, then the iPad 2 would have supported 7 major iOS versions and would have been supported for 6.5 years, which is extremely unlikely, especially considering the fact that no A5 nor A6 devices will be sold starting in the Fall.

I don't think the installed base is 60% anymore. People have been saying that for a while. Plus, the installed base will change in one year with all these new and upcoming devices.

It was also extremely unlikely according to everyone that the iPad 2 was going to get iOS 9.

The installed base is still high... I meant to say 50 not 60. It will drop, but slowly. Very slowly. I don't see it as likely that Apple will drop that many devices all at once. It all also depends on what iOS 10 turns out to be.

I don't think Apple would feel too guilty about dropping all those devices at once. They can drop the A5's first for iOS 10, then the A6's for iOS 11.

Besides, it was unlikely that the iPad 2 receive iOS 7. Then it was very unlikely that it receive iOS 8. Then it was really unlikely that it receive iOS 9. How much longer can that iPad possibly take?

Its not about guilt, its more about leaving large numbers of its users behind - Apple hates the F word (fragmentation) We'll see. Apple hasn't increased the OS X system requirements in years. They also are regularly doing strange things, for example most people said there were not be another iPod Touch.

I know, those people were not believers in the iPod touch :D

I would argue that because iOS 9 is a performance and stability improvement release, they wanted to have the best possible experience for A5 devices before discontinuing support for them. I think iOS 10 will be the perfect opportunity to beef up OS requirements (such as 1GB of RAM).
