I remain sceptical on this.

Apple would be going back on a design choice (ie. getting rid of the 4 inch screen) which seems unusual for them.

Then remaining in the iPhone 5-zone for a phone that looks nothing like any other iPhone 5? I realise the 5c is somewhat different in design but the plastic and colours made it different to any other iPhone out since. This would be a weird name (5se) with a design that looks like the iPhone 6 range, and not too long before a probable new design comes out with the iPhone 7.

I'm sure that these rumours are correct as they normally are in the end, but I still have my reservations by how "Apple" this all seems. Too messy.

to Rogifan:

No mention of RAM in the article. Am I missing something?

Yes, the paranoia and hysteria some MR posters like to display!

Yeah it's rather crazy. What's crazier is folks defending apple on this decision. If you took anything else from the first gen iPhone and there it into a 6s people would riot (or maybe they'd find ways to justify that too lol).

Exactly. Might as well slap a 2 megapixel camera on it, get rid of the front-facing camera, and put a 480x320 screen on any new iPhone while we're at it.

"New A9-Based 4-Inch iPhone to Replace iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and 6 Plus"

So that reads in a very clickbait way... Looks like they are going back to only 4" phones :D

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were a pathetic upgrade from the iPhone 5s (basically same chip and camera with really minor improvements), so it makes total sense.

But there's absolutely no justification for Apple giving that phone 1GB RAM. That's just being blatantly greedy for what? 3 cent savings?

"Yeah, let's cripple the user experience because we save ourselves $0.03 in production. Margins, people! Margins!"

This has been the case with virtually every S design to the next numerical revision since the 3GS. S models have a leap in internals, numerical revisions have a leap in design.

It's amazing how people on here will condemn a product based on ONE line of the specification, before the product has even been announced let alone released, tested, reviewed and benchmarked.

People these days. Sheesh.
They're condemning the theoretical product based on what they think they know. If the actual product is different than That product isn't what they were condemning today.

I mean, we can all just not talk about anything too, but that's no fun.

Why all the panic attacks about rumors of an unreleased product?

When this thing comes out, there will be nothing new in terms of the consumers it is being marketed too.
People can stand on their heads, but 16GB (if it comes that way) is their entry level for beginners or people who just use the phone for calls and checking e-mails. (Yep, there still are people like that)
1GB ram, same if it all works.
(BTW: I do agree that Apple could easily go one up on all of these. Especially, since I have been outwaiting them until a 128GB was available. They should be at 256 already, but Apple is sloooww when it comes to that))
Screen size is also marketed to those who want a smaller size phone.

In short , if none of what they come out with is taking care of your needs, THIS 4" phone is not for you!!!

This right here. Lots of little things to clean up before you make new stuff! Like why my iPad Mini 4 keeps disconnecting with all wifi signals even after wiping everything and starting fresh...

Right, could you picture ANY manufacturer (and they all have bugs, some more than others) coming out at a big event and saying, essentially: "Today we are about to announce something great, something you have all been waiting for - LAST YEAR'S PRODUCT WITH A YEAR'S WORTH OF SOFTWARE UPDATES!!!!" It would definitely make headlines, I'll give you that.

Does anybody else feel like Apple is choosing March for no reason other than to steal the spotlight from Samsung?

I'm pretty sure the entire reason Samsung chooses to release new products in March is just so they're as far out of Apple season as possible - they want their time in the spotlight and they know that if they and Apple release products at the same time, all the focus will be on Apple.

Not sure that is the case.

They always release products / showcase products around this time. If it is a 4" iPhone, they will want it far away enough apart from the September iPhone 7 launch. This is so they can sell as many 4" iPhones as they can (to those wanting a smaller phone) before we all work out than the iPhone 7 will be only marginally bigger that the a 4" and smaller than the iPhone 6 (smaller form factor same screen). That way they shift more phones, maybe sell 2 phones to the same customer in the same year and to those 'Apple crazies' who must buy everything they launch regardless.

The reason Apple didn't go to 256 already was because the entire industry has not been ready for it. That last leap, with the triple memory size, will push them into 256 GB territory...but remember that it also came with hardware bugs on the 128 GB models.

If they release in March, it will to distract from the falling numbers on the con call tomorrow.

I think they are choosing March because people have been going nuts for a 4-inch phone for 1.5 years now.

I mean, I would gladly take the 4s formfactor over a 6, but an all aluminium 5S would be preferable.
Theres been a 4 inch iPhone for 3 years. The 5, 5C and 5S. Why are you acting like they don't currently have one?

I have no problems with a phone with 2 year old hardware as long as its an inexpensive budget phone - $100-$200 range. If Apple wants to sell 2 year old hardware with only 16 GB for $500 its a ripoff.

What memory issues were people having with 1GB on 4" devices?

None... our iPhone 5 runs just fine on the current iOS. It's just people wanting more. The A9 processor would be a huge improvement for the 5se... I don't see why anyone would have issues with this spec.

Not like it's an Android device a memory hog. :)

Sure if you want your apps to quit in the background and for safari to reload tabs constantly, even when you only have two open at a time.
