Do you have the latest version of iOS9 running on it? Im still on 8 with my 5s, dont really want it to slow down as they do with updates when newer models are out..
I am on ios8. It does all I need it to do as is, and I haven't seen a reason to update it.

I am sure it will be iPhone 6s mini. 5se just won't sell, as it seems to be a product from many years ago.

The reason Apple didn't go to 256 already was because the entire industry has not been ready for it. That last leap, with the triple memory size, will push them into 256 GB territory...but remember that it also came with hardware bugs on the 128 GB models.
At 256 they could give iOS a file system and make it the smallest MAC.
Game changer.

Sure if you want your apps to quit in the background and for safari to reload tabs constantly, even when you only have two open at a time.

At what point should Apple then cut off older devices? (Oh the outcry!)

It's obvious that as iOS releases get more and more features something has got to give.

People can't expect to buy a Volkswagen beetle, put in one suit case and it drives fast, no impact.
Years later you add a family with all it's luggage and stuff they carry (and never throwing anything out)
and it gets crowded and doesn't fit any more, plus it is no longer as peppy to drive.

So, either you'll leave stuff behind (less apps) or buy a bigger car with a stronger motor.

Or, if there is nothing to be added (no family etc.) keep driving with the configuration as is until the car dies.

Let me cut it down to this:

16 GB devices have a premium price tag yet they have crappy performance.

16GB has nothing to do with performance, and frankly, you have no idea if it has crappy performance. If this new iPhone packs an A9 chip as rumors suggest, it should be one of the top performing flagship phones on the market today.

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were a pathetic upgrade from the iPhone 5s (basically same chip and camera with really minor improvements), so it makes total sense.

But there's absolutely no justification for Apple giving that phone 1GB RAM. That's just being blatantly greedy for what? 3 cent savings?

"Yeah, let's cripple the user experience because we save ourselves $0.03 in production. Margins, people! Margins!"

I don't think they will cripple the phone for margins on that device - just like many other features Apple holds back: it will be for the upsell. They will force anyone discerning enough to understand what 1GB means; to go with the 6S or 6S+ with fatter margins on these upmarket devices. All the while, for those who don't care or don't know enough - Apple will be happy to sell them a 5SE (or whatever it is called).

I am sure it will be iPhone 6s mini. 5se just won't sell, as it seems to be a product from many years ago.

It seems like there is a logical explanation to both the naming and A8/A9 confusion... Apple might announce two new 4" phones.

We could have an iPhone 5se at $450 with an A8 and 5s design cues, and an iPhone 6s mini at $599 with an A9 and iPhone 6 design cues.

This allows Apple to do something really interesting in the fall when the 7 launches... they can keep the 5se in the lineup alongside the 6, but drop the price down to $399. You get to sell a device with the lowest ever cost of entry as the 4" version of A8-era devices, and simultaneously offer a fully-segmented upper end with matching price points.

Perhaps this is all just wishful thinking on my part... No matter what 4" phone gets released, I will be voting with my dollars.

Performance in my mind is also what you are able to do, not just processor speed. Not being able to film more than a few minutes in 4k is crappy pefromance in my mind.

16 GB is just cumbersome if you want to fully enjoy an iPhone.

If the average consumer had an actual understanding of basic technology, there wouldn't be so much outcry in device support. I see iPhone users whining all the time about how their iPhone 4 doesn't work well with iOS 8 and not supported by iOS 9 (just an example, I don't remember if the 4 supports iOS 9). Well no duh, of course it's not going to, because your hardware is considered ancient in the tech world.

The other point I want to make is how funny those users of that same iPhone 4 complain that they can't run new software that was optimized to run four years after their hardware is released, while at the same time, Android phones are lucky to see even one update.

I don't even try to educate people outside of internet forums about technology. The people I talk to would rather go out, get drunk at the club, get laid, and have babies. Personally I'm not into that kind of life--I'd rather be successful. But I guess if it makes them happy, that's not my problem.

It's a real shame they're dropping the plastic iPhone 5c. Before too long there won't be any vibrant colours in Apple products. If the 5c goes that only leaves the iPod as having any colourful options. Give me a dark metallic blue or red iPhone over the current range of boring colours any day.

Oh the horror of losing the ridiculous pink, yellow, robin's egg blue, and stupid green color the plastic iPhones were made out of. If anything those colors were an embarrassment and looked like phones catered to 9 year old girls.

Would Apple ever consider using 1gb ram in the 16 gig model to keep it low end and putting 2gb in the 64 as an upsale? I generally only need a 16gb phone but would love to have more ram, and that would certainly convince me to upgrade to 64.

I'm not really bothered by these rumors because until Apple releases a new 4 inch model its just that, rumors.

Yes, totally agreed. I wonder how it is possible to not see that technology is old the second it is being presented (Not even sold) and added features and new developments will have no performance impact on an old device.

As for having babies, I go with Bill Burr: stop$#@8ing we have enough dumb people in the world. Do we really need another idiot who will not drive into the intersection:)

I suppose that's a good reason to discontinue the iPhone 6 anyway. But i'm not gona pay more than the iPhone 6. so my options will be slim if i need a new phone.

Apple's next-generation 4-inch iPhone is more likely to include variants of the A9 and M9 motion coprocessor chips, allowing for always-on Hey Siri, according to 9to5Mac.

The report claims the so-called "iPhone 5se" will likely replace the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in Apple's fall 2016 smartphone lineup, while the iPhone 5s will then be discontinued.9to5Mac and other sources originally expected the new 4-inch iPhone to have an A8 chip with M8 motion coprocessor, but Chinese website MyDrivers last week said the device will have an A9 chip instead. Apple has allegedly tested multiple prototypes with both A8 and A9 chipsets, likely fueling the conflicting reports.

Today's report also claims the new 4-inch iPhone will have 16GB and 64GB storage models available, which again corroborates Chinese website MyDrivers. Other possible specs reported elsewhere include a 1,624 mAh battery, 1GB of RAM, Bluetooth 4.2, Apple Pay, VoLTE and 802.11ac WiFi, but 3D Touch appears unlikely.

The next-generation 4-inch iPhone reportedly entered mass production last week, ahead of a rumored March event announcement, alongside the iPad Air 3 and Apple Watch updates including new bands and possibly other minor improvements. The smartphone is expected to ship in late March or early April.

I have 6s now and would gladly go back to smaller phone as it is easy to use and I do not feel it in pocket; Very annoying to feel bulky phone in pants agghhh; For reading etc I use iPad and phone sparingly for internet, light reading, etc. But, must have at least 12 pox in camera etc...

1GB of RAM is plenty, or at least that's what I read here for years while other phones had 2 or 3.

I am excited for small phone yeah, I know dozens of people personally who prefer smaller 5s phone ; i would also like it to have same square sides as it is easier to grip (I hate cases and never used them and iPhone 6s is not grippy). As soon as 4" comes out me getting rid of 6s and hopefully it has square sides as 5s and at least 12 pix cam; don't care about 3D (never use it)

This is GREAT news - can't wait to upgrade from my 5s!
[doublepost=1453766965][/doublepost]
What memory issues were people having with 1GB on 4" devices?
I've had none on my 5s. Don't expect any on the new phone either. In my humble and non-technical experience I don't care what the RAM is as long as the user experience is good and thus far and for my needs, the experience is great.
[doublepost=1453767108][/doublepost]
But it's Apple that chooses to allow these devices to get multiple OS upgrades. Those upgrades don't work nearly as well on devices with only 1GB RAM. Besides it sounds like this phone won't have everything the 6S has so I don't see why they have to skimp on the ram to further segment it.
I have a 5S and an Air 2. Both on the latest OS and both work equally well in my experience.

I can't believe Apple would go with the A8/1 GB ram for this. After six months, such a 4 inch phone would move to the bottom rung (alongside the iPhone 6 if it sticks around). Would Apple really go to all this trouble with design, mass production and launch for the soon-to-be-lowest tier? With an A9/2GB, it would be top tier for 6 months and then sit alongside the 6s from September onwards as the 2nd tier phone. As has been pointed out, the A8 was quite an underperforming chip that was saved from pure mediocrity by its GPU bump (there's a nice article somewhere - possible Ars - where they speculate that a failure to move to a new fabrication architecture meant Apple couldn't clock the A8 as high as they wanted without overheating).

Then there's the name - the A8 chips are iPhone 6 class and A9 chips are 6s class. Why use the iPhone 5 name - it makes zero sense?

Finally, if Apple are serious about 3D touch being the next generation of input, then they have to start including it on all their devices asap. If not I can't see developer support really increasing.

So basically a 4" iPhone 6? Makes sense to me.

Really can't wait for this new iPhone 7 4" phone in March (for my birthday:) ); I really don't like my 6s with rounded edges and pretty large can't use comfortably with one hand and is bulky and uncomfortable when stored in pocket agghhh ; was contemplating switching to some other brand like Sony for some compact size phone but now I'm happy knowing they will be making 4" phone (getting rid of some of the bezel would be nice too but...ok..just have 3 sizes (no rounded edges apple!) with same specs what all the differences:
iphone 7 4", 4.7 and 5.5 (small, regular, grande or regular, big, gigantic whatever just bring back 4" with square edges and same specs as larger version

Whatever happens I can guarantee you this march won't see an iPhone 7 of any description. At best you can hope for an iPhone 6S with a 4" screen.

Replacing the iPhone 6 and 6+ ?! Interesting... But it makes sense when September comes along.
