The Apple press release clearly states theses are Gen 2. Don't expect to see anymore updates this year! This is it!

Cupertino, California — Apple today announced new AirPods, the second generation of the world’s most popular wireless headphones. AirPods revolutionized the wireless audio experience with a breakthrough design and the new AirPods build on the magical experience customers love. The new Apple-designed H1 chip, developed specifically for headphones, delivers performance efficiencies, faster connect times, more talk time and the convenience of hands-free "Hey Siri.” AirPods come with either a standard charging case or a new Wireless Charging Case for convenient charging at home and on the go. The new AirPods and AirPods with Wireless Charging Case are available to order on apple.com and the Apple Store app starting today, and in Apple Stores beginning next week.

A little disanointed after over 2 years no big design change esp black. I think Apple wants to keep the white fashion trend. I went ahead and upgraded as my 2 year old airpods are not lasting long battery wise. Hopefully they are BT 5 and the connectivity/sound is a better.

I am stoked for Gen 2! Wireless charging will be cool along with the other incremental improvements, but by far the most important enhancement is “Hey Siri” support.

Anyone who lives in a cold place that requires gloves knows why. It’s an absolute pain to remove gloves or fiddle with phone to change volume, songs, etc. Think about winter sports, skiing, etc.

Insta-buy.

Your point makes complete sense for Siri use. But will everyone be walking around and taking the subway now saying, "Hey Siri, do ____"? I don't hear it all the time with phones, but sometimes. Will this make it worse? Partially, it's an annoyance, partially it's just me not being comfortable letting everyone around me know I want the volume on my headphones to change or what song to play next.

Exactly. But yet, people on here will still argue with you stating they aren't Gen 2. People can't read.

Love to see some reviews that show the battery real world improvement. 50% improved life I am highly skeptical given how manufacturers inflate battery life estimates.
Apple often understates their battery life in products

Read my post carefully... I am not buying them because they don't fit my ears. And yes when your closest competitor offers a similar product with the same features at a cheaper price you are gouging your customers...... the markets did tell Apple they were overpriced but that was on the phone... I guess they are taking a gamble that people won't feel the same with the airpods.
I made no statement regarding why you are/aren't buying these. Read MY post carefully. Also, unless you have Apple's exact sales data, you can only speculate that the phone was "overpriced". Demand can be affected by many things: price, competitor products, overall economic conditions, satisfaction with existing products. Just because you don't like the price doesn't make it "gouging" (which really isn't a thing anyways, if you know economics). There are $400,000 supercars I'd like to own. However, because I can't/won't pay that doesn't mean Lamborghini or whoever is "gouging" me. The price is high and demand is low.

No design change. I was HOPING perhaps a slight design in the bud to fit ears better (I know they fit many fine, some of us have problems) . I am VERY shocked new colors haven't been released though. (Black, Fog, even a (Product) Red).

Maybe the only good thing about the lack of new design change, those silicone covers on Amazon, other sites will fit these also. For us that have that problem with the pods coming loose...or we're constantly fiddling around with them, these covers have been a Godsend!

**NO I do not work with them. I picked these up a few weeks ago and the Pods finally just stay in my goofy ears! :)

Has Apple ever done product refreshes / updates like this—no event, this many products, trickled out over a week? Off the top of my head, I can't think of any.

I agree with what you are saying above. However, everything they are releasing seems to be an iterative update. It would appear that they really want to save the next event to showcase services.

Purchased with the wireless charging case. My wife keeps taking my AirPods running after I let her try them one time, so yeah, she can keep them, lol.

It makes even more sense when reading what Gurman wrote on Twitter:

These AirPods were initially planned to go on sale last year. They’re also working on a future version with noise-cancellation and water resistance. Those were planned for later this year, but would now imagine that’s for 2020.

I may be wrong, but I don't see Apple going with color choices for these. Apple headphones have been white since they started releasing them -- it's part of the branding now.

Clearly you are in your little apple bubble if you think that. They work just as well as air pods and sound better and you know actually uses an assistant that isn't useless and you can do plenty more gestures but sure go ahead and think they are worthless
Sure let’s see how popular they are among consumers

I still don't understand why people pay so much for what is exactly the same sound-wise as the standard included earphones. I got the BeatsX and they are cheaper and have way better sound, combined with the W1 Chip!
I said the same thing until I tried the BeatsX and went back to my AirPods.

Firstly, the AirPods’ sound quality is not the same as the regular wired pods included on the iPhones. The AirPods have better sounding acoustics.

The BeatsX needs a little bit more adjusting to fit my ears properly and the Airpods do sound more spacious where I can hear individual instruments in their own location. The BeatsX also produces this annoying sound when the wires are brushing on my neck (or shirt collar) when I walk. The Airpods are also more convenient to put on and store.

Oh and let’s not forget the convenience the gestures on the Airpods provides...no comparison to the manual buttons on the BeatsX.

Never going back to the BeatsX or any sound isolating earbuds.

Won’t happen no one cares about tiny screen phones.
Buy a iphone 8 if you want a small phone. Or is .7 of a inch really a big deal to you 4 inch fans?
