We need AirPods that are sweat-proof, offer superior sound and isolation, and come in matte black.
I have to agree ... 2 years and just a battery boost, hey Siri (which I never use), and wireless charging case? This is more in line with a “S” update! For those that don’t currently own a pair, otherwise it looks like a money grab!

My current AirPods are crapping out on me, sound drops out! I guess from all the sweat working out! I had them for 10 months!

Initially I had a knee jerk reaction and placed a pair in my bag, then realized I’m paying 200+ with tax for a minor update, and no real functionality for me during my workouts.

Very disappointed. My Gen1s are crapping out. Battery is atrocious. I was going to pounce on the 2nd gen as soon as announced. I saw this story and fired up the Apple Store app. Had the new pods in my cart, then hesitated. “Let me check out all the details first...”. Came back here to read, then read everything on their store. My cart went empty. Spending nearly $200 for not much of an upgrade isn’t worth it to me.

I guess I’ll look for something else, or just wait until 2020.

Very disappointed.

When you do the numbers Apple does it doesn't work like that. They aren't going to go get a pay day loan if they didn't get the bump this quarter.
I was referring to their quarterly earnings. They posted a 5% revenue decline (year-over-year) last quarter (which included the last holidays).

I wouldn't imagine they want to report a second quarter-in-a-row of declining revenue results, so I was wondering if they held some of these updates until now, to help this quarters revenue show an increase over last years. This was all in response to a post that asked why these weren't released during the last holiday.

Good thing they cost the same as original Airpods. However, to charge an extra $50 for the inductive charging case is annoying and in line with Apple's increased greed. The standalone case price of $79 is even more outrageous. Also disappointing that they only come in white still. Clearly, no Apple employee or executive has ever seen snow. It is WHITE Apple and it blends with Airpods like rain in a puddle.

There seems to be no photos of the bottom of the wireless case, there is still a lightning port there yes?

Edit: Saw that my question has already been answered. It says in the product description that they indeed have a lightning port.

Not being negative, but I would expected more from Apple on this update with AirPods, especially been since it’s well over two years since they have been updated. Kind of disappointed, and wish they would’ve least offered a secondary color in a slate/black and a water resistance rating at a minimum.

You can have them in any color as long as it’s white.

What an oddly boring refresh. A new chip and wireless charging. No new audio specs. No design changes.

Even Sony knows you gotta change more than that to get upgraders excited.

Why would they hold updates until the quarter is almost over?

If they had done this the first week of January I’d agree with your theory.

Do you guys think the sound quality has been improved at all or it’s basiclly the same as far as sound quality goes compared to original AirPods?

Better battery, faster swapping, and hey Siri are good updates. The wireless charging is nice too, if you want to pay for it. The current model has nothing at all wrong with it, and these will be better at the same price. I’m happy.

Beyond the issues with the charging case, my guess is Apple sees the AirPods with its non-invasive outer ear design as part of the classic iPhone headset look and function. If you want a wireless headset that you have to stick into the ear canal, they have Beats versions to offer, or for more comfortable yet still sound isolating, there are the over the ears Beats (and Bose, Sony, etc.).

I've not used any of the Apple headsets for more than 5 years, having gone wireless, but I just pulled a set that came with my X out of my drawer to see if I would be ok with the sound of the AirPods and I'm surprised how ok they are. I already own ANC Plantronic BackBeat Pro 2's, which sound fantastic and are great for travel. But during a normal workday, I like to be able to hear the background, and can't stand any insertable headsets for more than a few minutes.

So I may just end up ordering a set or two of the new AirPods - my wife has been pining for a set for a while, so the timing is right.

I've also got a set of the BackBeat Pro 2, but these are used at work for all day conference calls. Way too big for me for my style of travel. When I travel, I use the wired lightning earbuds that came with my iPhone X, stored in the little plastic case that came with the wired 3.5 earbuds in my iPhone 6. Airpods would replace my use case for my wired earbuds, portability and travel.

As much as I'd love a set, I'm still probably not going to buy them, for the same reason I haven't bought the original airpods, I don't actually 'need' them enough to justify the spend. The wired is good enough for my current usage. If I was back on the road every week, like I used to be a few years ago, maybe, but currently, these are going to sit in the "Maybe one day" bucket.
