Why would anyone want a trackpad for a DESKTOP mac? Trackpads were invented for laptops where a mouse couldn't be used, lets not take the trackpad where a mouse actually CAN, and should, be used.

Because lots of peope use their mac mini as a htpc.

If the keyboard is even smaller then i'm glad i got the current one as it's barely ergonomic for me. Going smaller would make it pretty much unusable.

As for the mighty mouse, you couldn't pay me to...long live Logitech

What I need

1 - wireless keyboard needs a numeric keypad before I'll buy it
2 - wireless mouse needs to lose the scroll ball and replace it with a touch sensitive surface.

The scroll ball is the biggest design flaw I've seen from Apple in a long time.

Oh YES new Mouse PLEASE

I've been hoping for a usable mouse for about 9 years now. The last was was coming cose, but I'll still get a capital mouse hand cause it's just too small and the 'buttons' should just be mechanic. really.

OK, I'm being unrealistic.

Just to point out, last years October event was the 14th and invites to that event were sent out the 9th! So I think we'll be seeing some invites drop in veeery soon.

I think a new mouse would be very cool. But only if it works properly.

But, but, but... think about the dimensions. Maybe the mouse is destined for computer use. But a smaller keyboard, maybe that is going to be useful for some sort of tablet device ;-)

Even smaller keyboard? Laame. They better have a big version of this as well, wouldn't that need an FCC filing as well? Hopefully it's not discontinued. (I'm talking about a wired version though)

Apple will probably not make a large (with number pad) wireless keyboard. The bigger size of this keyboard will most likely be wired, therefore making FCC filings unnecessary.

Smaller keyboard is good.

I like the smaller keyboard. It reminds me of my original Mac. I am not an accountant and I really don't want to be one, so keep that number pad away from me.

Why do people want trackpads... on a desktop?

The last time I regularly used a mouse was when I still had my old, white plastic C2D kitchen wonder MacBook. Since the Air and the unibody MacBooks and Pros, I only use the trackpad. I would find it very difficult to start using a mouse again. Even when I use external monitors, I prefer to use the trackpad. With browsing, emails, legal research softwares and academic databases; I couldn't justify any kind of mouse, if I can use a multi-gesture trackpad.

I occasionally use Adobe's Illustrator, Photoshop and Dreamweaver; I can imagine that if I was a heavy user, speed would improve with a mouse. But then I would probably have a proper graphic tablet. I think a keyboard with multi-touch trackpad would be a great hit.

I don't know what they could changed with the BT keyboard. Maybe a built in battery? But even then it's not a big deal.

A backlight on the BT keyboard would only drain the battery like CRAZY and black keys look REALLY greasy overtime.

I would be curious as to how long the batteries would last in a wireless backlit keyboard. Though I would definatly love to see it happen !
Not long. Logitech has a wireless BT keyboard called DiNovo Edge that has partial backlighting - it's only on the F keys and only when you hold down the modifier for alternate functionality. And that thing has a rechargeable Li-Ion battery with plenty of juice. If Apple were to add backlighting while sticking with their 1950's 3xAA battery solution, I'd estimate that the batteries will last about 3-4 days with constant backlighting on all keys. It's just not realistic, with or without Li-Ion batteries.

My only wish is that they give up their foolish pride and make a 2-button mouse that actually has two buttons, rather than hiding it under a single shell. They stood by their 1-button principle forever even though they knew it was wrong, but because 2 buttons is the Microsoft/PC way, the babies at Apple somehow try to add the same functionality without overtly adapting it, so we ended up with the 1-button 2-button hybrid mess that is the Mighty Mouse. Just give it up guys, we won't hold it against you...

Keyboard not smaller, just not shown completely

The size of the "keyboard" depicted on the FCC pictures matches the exact size of the white back plastic cover on the current wireless keyboard. I believe they are just showing the compliance labels for FCC and not the full product. So don't expect a new keyboard design based on that.

Regarding the mouse, it could only be the part of the battery cover with the compliance labels, maybe different design but nothing conclusive here.

Actually I have like 6 of those remotes and never used them. They are still wrapped hehe. If they will make universal remote on the other hand than we can talk about dropping my hard earned cash......

Ooo. Can you send me one of them? Haha. Just kidding. I've always wanted one, but I just use my PSP to control my electronics.

smaller keyboard?? whyyyyyy! Just make it backlight and ill buy it.

If it is indeed backlit I would most definitely be tempted! As for the mouse, I hope i'm pleasantly surprised but I wont hold my breath, at the moment i'm still holding on to my Logitech Bluetooth mouse.

I just hope they don't go overboard like Logitech has with buttons upon buttons.

If Apple are removing the spaces between the Keys it can be only two reasons

1. Style

2. To make the surface of the keyboard feel as much like "One Seemless Piece" as possible.

This would allow the user to move their fingers over the keys in a gesture fashion without actually clicking the keys, this would be used for mouse movement too.

Wether This simply works as is or you have to action the gesture mode by pressing a key I dont know but it will work, because it is already being used by the SOny PS3 Communicator on a smaller scale and it works very well

Apple knows what they're doing. After all, they're the leaders is making usable human interfaces and innovative easy to use hardware. On the other hand, judging by Microsofts mess of a UI in windows and bad reliability when it comes to their hardware, I would never use a MS mouse.

Wait a minute....this could allow a crazy and revolutionary keyboard/touchpad hybrid

Imagine a keyboard with glass keys not separed by spaces, when not pressed they would create a seamless glass multitouch surface!

I'm saving this post....

That would be fine for those who "hunt and peck" but how would that work for touch typists?

Agreed, apple has a long way to go to make a better mouse :)

apple mice are one of the few items apple makes where they let the function follow the form when it should be the other way around.

That and people like to see thier buttons not just assume an area of where they might be.

I havent used Apple's remote, but I feel as though a remote is one of the devices that would benefit from more buttons. It's not like you're holding it for hours on end either.

Not at all...with a good software (and the long press/short press duality) you can do everything with 6 buttons.....try Remote Buddy (20$), it's a software that will make your Apple Remote a perfect remote for doing everything (although I prefer using the Wii Remote with my MacMini mediacenter, which is possible thanks to Remote Buddy). (the Wii Remote use a standard Bluetooth conncection, so with the proper drivers and software it is possible to use it with any Mac).

Apple could use some crazy patented touch technology (like the ones on the iPhone, for example the one that predicts if you want to pan or vertical scroll from the inclination of your finger) to tell if your fingers are touching the keyboard for typing or for using the touchpad (and, if that's the case, automatically put only that zone of the keyboard in "touchpad mode" and leaving the possibilty to type on the rest of the keyboard).
