For me, I would take a pay cut and stay at home. However, if office work will be required, no pay cut will be accepted and I’ll need a higher compensation starting point.

My reasoning is that time going to and from the office shouldn’t be taken from me without compensation. That’s without taking into account actual commuting costs such as gas and/or public transport.

Apple should have that flexibility for workers, but standards for at home work set higher. Also, some employees do like the perks of earning as if they were living in the city while living in cheaper areas. Take Apple’s main space ship campus. Employees are refusing to work there as the cost of living is high. But if you love outside of the area and don’t go into the office anymore, your salary should reflect that then. We can’t have our cake and eat it too. Compromises must be made.
Sorry it seems you have misunderstood. Working for Apple for me would mean both a pay cut and having to commute to an office. Right now I get more pay and can work from home or the office for as long as I want. It is now normal for developers to work fully remote as we only talk to each other on Slack anyway. Apple are competing for the best talent with lower wages and forced time in the office.

So let’s say Apple offered me more than I earn now and I took the job. Why would I be in the office for three days a week when I could be in my own office at home or anywhere? Firstly I would need to wear headphones again and then instead of healthy meals I have to buy a lunch. All so that I can say good morning to people in the morning then ignore their existence until the end of the day.

Ahh, yes, I misunderstood then. I wouldn’t take a pay cut to work at Apple regardless of home or office.

Don’t get me wrong I have and will take pay cuts if the project is interesting enough. I change jobs when the projects appeal to me and present the right kind of challenge and sometimes that means moving from a bigger company with deeper pockets over to a startup.

Which is one of the reasons Apple software sucks so much. Some things just don't seem to get done correctly from home, especially from people with a lousy work ethic. Apple needs to get the developers back on campus and get the bugs squashed. I always dreamed of having workers work from home, but then the pandemic proved it simply doesn't work, at least not with Apple developers.
Why not put the in a gulag? I bet they work even harder for you!

Developer here. That attitude is why I'll turn down candidates, or toss their CV before they get that far. That stance is running out of steam - I'd adapt if I were you, or you'll find yourself struggling to get somewhere. I also don't struggle to recruit solid candidates.

Where I am, we've figured that one day in the office a week is the healthy sweet-spot. Some people do more days in the office though, that's their choice.
Engineering manager here - I don't care where you work as long as your deliver.

Someone who is set in their ways with inflexibility is a sure way to get tossed out.

Developers need to get back to the office to help improve productivity and product quality. Apple's ones do, anyway. I say this as a developer.
Or they just need to improve product quality. You don’t know that productively is down and that would go counter to the rest of the industry. You also don’t know that Slacking a developer in an office is going to mean you get an answer quicker than Slacking them at home. Apple have put onto some shockingly bad software without the excuse of it being caused by developers working from home.

I really dislike the "I hold all the leverage" attitude from developers on both sides of the table. Work from home isn't new and it isn't going away. There's forever going to be a bit more of it available after COVID. Offices aren't going away either. There's always going to be a mix of 100% WFH, 100% in office, and hybrid models to choose from. Choose the workplace that fits you best.

I don't get this work from home rant. WFH was a "temporary" measure to avoid getting COVID. It was never intended to be permanent. They knew this going in. What is the problem?
In plenty of contracts, they were written in that the principle place of employment is 'your home', I have no idea if Apple had this, but it's now commonplace to put this in, or allow remote possibilities.

The world has changed, and engineers can easily get jobs elsewhere which do have remote options. At the end of the day, it should be the team's discretion on office attendance.

Personally, every time I'm in office with my team, we go for lunch together and the company pays for it - I think they prefer we work from home most of the time.

Okay, well that makes sense. If it's in a Contract, then it's in a contract, but if it's not, it's not! So still, pick a place to work that suits your needs as someone else stated, but stop ranting about it if it's not in your contract and they want you back at the office!
