Amazon.com is selling current mb's with a $75 rebate that suspiciously ends on 11/12/2007. hmmm....

See thats just it. All they need is a little something new for people to go "HOLY CRAP I HAVE TO HAVE THE NEW THING AND I NEED IT NOOWWWWWWWW MOMMYYYYY!" Most people don't care about SR or LED, they just know its a little faster and more hard drive-y.

Also, why do people equate waiting on the Macbook with the release of a Slimbook? Totally new product vs. minor upgrades until macbook redesign next year is a bit of a stretch. But what on this site isnt?

Exactly, and are parents really gonna buy the high end model of a MacBook for their kid for Christmas? I don't think so. The high end is suppose to be 2.33ghz and the low end 2.16ghz. There really isn't a speed difference to the normal consumer from 2.0ghz to 2.16ghz. Pros would notice the speed difference, but consumers? Nahhhhh. :apple:

If that's a sign, hopefully Apple is gonna run both the MacBook and the MacPro together on the 13th. That would rock. I'd buy BOTH in a heartbeat... Well, just the MacPro. lol

Actually, if the MacBook IS released on November 6th, then you can be sure the MacPro will follow on the 13th. :)

Isn't MacWorld for Consumers, not Pro?
Off the top of my head, the first MacBook Pro was released in January of 2006.
I still believe in November 13th for the MacPro.
Maybe because Apple have released professional desktops in November before, but only if they release a new MacBook as well. If it's one or the other with Christmas coming, then the MacBook will be released first because MacPro's are not considered a Christmas present.

I cannot remember the last time that Apple did not update a consumer portable in the second half of the year before, and I don't think they've ever released one in January previously either. If a new MacBook doesn't come in the next week, then it would be foolish to release it in January, but May will mean a full year between MacBook's which is too long.

I've noticed those rebates for a while too. I think it's fairly safe to say that a new MacBook will be released, and I think it will be next Tuesday. I expect it to be a significant upgrade too because Apple will not update their MacBook's in January. Whether MacPro's will be released as well remains to be seen.

Well, I would think the MacBook would be first (Nov. 6th). Then the MacPro (Nov. 13th) to follow. There are about 80-100 of us in these forums ready to buy a MacPro, that's $250,000 plus for Apple. Then with outside companies, like the one I'm working for, considering buying 3-5, and all the other companies out there and so on and so on. It would just be nice for Apple to do a nice refresh on everything before the new year and debut something new in January. ... We don't need a huge event like MacWorld for a new MacPro, its just getting a chip change and graphics card update... Just like the MacBook.

Ive been hearing about the new macbook having features "touch"-like. Does anyone know anything about this? Im waiting to get my mac too but i dont wanna get somthing thats just about to get updated...

i completely agree with you. people are only looking at the modest bump in speed going from a really, old crappy integrated graphics to a newer, but still crappy integrated graphics. the big issue for me is the capability of 4 gb ram. would love to see a dedicated graphics card option, but for that price/size/heat generation/battery life, it isn't going to happen. stuck with the crappy integrated graphics.

yeah, the new slimbooks won't be released until solid state drive prices come down and capacities begin to reach over 100 gb at a reasonable price. the slimbooks need the ssd for improved battery life etc, but right now, they carry a $800 premium just for a 64 gb drive (too small for most people for that price). samsung and other companies are beginning to ramp up production. give it another year.

if they increase the specs of the macbook (SR core 2 duo and x3100) it isn't going to be even noticable. maybe a completely unplayable game will now hit 15 frames per second, that's it.

on a side note, i really wish apple had some option of a dedicated graphics card laptop that was alot lower in price. 3 years ago, i bought a dell (tomatoes get thrown at me...) laptop with a 128 mb dedicated graphics card for $1500. i can't see myself dropping 2k on a MBP just because it has a graphics card (and only 128 mb at that), let alone $2500. i think i would be better off just buying the medium MB for $1199 and building a desktop for $800 for games.

Good luck with that. No Apple product will have touch technology without a HUGE press event. If a consumer notebook had it, better believe there would be invites out and a conference hall rented for that sucker.

My prediction

My prediction knowing Apple is that this coming month, November, the MacBooks will be updated, but not completely change it's look. It will probably have a better screen, updated keyboard layout and definitely faster Intel processor.

I feel that in January/February, Apple will introduce a brand new MacBook. A completely new machine inside and out. I also, believe that iPhone will have 16GB by Christmas priced at around $499, and then the current 8GB iPhone will drop $50 in price to $349 or less, as well as the iPod touch.

If you want a completely new MacBook, wait till January or so. If you want an nicely updated MacBook, wait a couple weeks max. Since they just launched Leopard OS, I guarantee you these new MacBooks will be available by mid-November.

Watch.

That and the first "touch" would probably go to MacBook Pro and cost a boat load. lol Unless Apple debuts a new type of "MacBook Pro Slimmy Jim" with "touch." lol :p

That and I would love to fully utilize Leopard on a new MacPro 8-Core mid-November as well.

See that's just it. Apple changes the entire architecture of the MB just for a BTO dedicated graphics option? Knowing how much they charge for "upgrades" on BTO products, it would be an astronomical cost (with the OBVIOUS ploy to get people just to spring for the MBP. No one is going to pay hundreds more for ded. graphics when they can just buy a damn pro)

You are better off doing exactly as you say. Buy a sensible mac, then buy a cheap laptop with an upgraded gfx card. It will cost you the same as an MBP and you can play more games on it.

No way do they do a small upgrade then a complete redesign two months later. Product cycle alone makes that completely unfeasable.

I still say they roll out the brand spanking, sweet lordy look at THAT Macbook in May '08, just in time for the back to school crowd in July/August.

EDIT: By the way, I hope you are totally right about a price drop on the iPod touch. That sucka is TOTALLY on my Christmas list.

keep dreaming on that...
they release an update and then 2months later something new? where's the sense in that... that would make consumers reallyyyyy happy tou know?
like i'm buyng the macbook now and 2months later a new one comes out? LOL

I think the updates won't come until Nov 13th.

If a lot of people bought macbooks on leopard night, that's Oct 26th...
November 9th is the end of their 14 day return period with a 10% restocking fee. Why release it on the 6th when you can wait a week and then these people can't bring back their Macs. I'm sure there won't be a huge number of people bringing them back. But nevertheless, if they want to deplete their stock of old macbooks, releasing a new one within that 14 day period, they're going to find some old MB's back in their hands.

PS Do you have a link to that rebate?

So, the new macbook coming out in january is going to be the "slimbook" is that right? What are the specs going to be in comparison to the macbook? Do we know that yet? I just really dont want to get somthing then have it become outdated. Im sure you can all understand.

One of the more intelligent posts on here. My only quibble is that I think the "completely new machine inside and out" to be released in January will be in the MacBook Pro line. The lower-priced consumer MB version won't come out until at least April/May. (That's one reason why Apple is almost certainly going to release an upgraded version of their current MB model in the next couple of weeks.)

If you want a new MB, wait a week or two, unless you absolutely, positively need it now. If it must be the "new shiny," and you can afford MBP prices, then wait until January. Or, if you want the discounted consumer "new shiny," wait until next spring.

Oh, and I don't see why Apple can't release both an upgraded MB and an upgraded Mac Pro in the next couple of weeks, either on the same release date or a week or so apart. It doesn't have to be either/or. These will just be upgrades, not major overhauls. No need for a huge release event.

Best guess is, the spanking-new redesigned-from-the-ground-up slim-and-trim MacBook Pro is coming out in January. MacBook consumers will have to make due with the current design (with a slight upgrade in some features to be released in the next couple of weeks) probably until April or May, when most probably a shiny new redesigned MB will be released. Capiche?

If wishes were lemondrops ...

;)Unfortunately, I agree with this assessment. Wishes are not reality. Unfortunate, because my PB G4 bit the dust yesterday (harddrive and maybe more involved) and I would love to grab a new, hot off the presses MB or more likely MBPro since I do not want to deal with integrated graphics cards. Nor do I relish plowing a significant amount of change into an aging PB.

I am sure they will retain only 2 models after the upgrade.

Yes this, or it could be a new redesigned MacBook next week with a slight upgrade in May of next year.

I think the new MacBooks will have Santa Rosa and much better graphics, but time will tell if the outside is changed yet or not.

Anything is possible in this crazy topsy-turvy world, but I don't think Apple will undercut the cutting-edge coolness factor of its (higher-profit-margin) MBP by releasing a whiz-bang new-design MB model before they come out with their whiz-bang new-design MBPs.

I'm not sure that I would be shocked

I don't think that I would be suprised if Apple upgraded or didn't upgrade the current Macbook. I don't think anyone that purchased one in the last year would see enough benefit in buying a new one. Especially if the upgrade called for an only slightly faster processor and a different video driver.
Apple will ultimately sell computers to new consumers and the fence sitters even if they leave the macbok alone until next year.
People bought 2 million copies of Leopard release weekend, over 1 million iphones, and plenty of new ipods recently. Lots of hype surrounding Apple right now.
The general public will still want what Apple's selling this holiday season. The current macbook in its' current state is still a great value at $1,299. Most people will buy either way.
