Anything is possible in this crazy topsy-turvy world, but I don't think Apple will undercut the cutting-edge coolness factor of its (higher-profit-margin) MBP by releasing a whiz-bang new-design MB model before they come out with their whiz-bang new-design MBPs.
I certainly think it's possible, particularly if it's only until January. The pre-Christmas sales generated by a redesigned MacBook will counter any loss in the current MacBook Pro, particularly when it will only be until January for a new MacBook Pro to be released.

Prediction...

Apple holds off on all major product announcements until Macworld in Jan.

Sorry, Apple Fans, this only makes business sense. They have plenty of great products, including new iPods, for the holidays. Laptops are not exactly holiday gift material. Finally, Steve needs something to trumpet in January.

The general public will still want what Apple's selling this holiday season.

Esp. if what Apple is selling is "UPDATED!" and "NEW!" "FASTER!" "BETTER!" etc.

The current macbook in its' current state is still a great value at $1,299

I'm sorry dude, I think many would disagree. The technology as old as the first release, with the exception of C2D instead of CD and a minor speed/hd bump.

Granted most people don't know that, but the tech is still WAY out of date compared to what other competitors have cranked out in the typical 3-month cycle for other laptops.

What you're paying for is OSX and owning an Apple. Which has always been the case, but you get to be one of the 8% of people that gets noticed in Starbucks or high school.

for those of you who think apple wouldn't update now and then again the same product in a couple of months, isn't that exactly what they did with the ipod mini/nano? didn't they update the mini and then a month or two later drop it entirely and introduce the nano? (and in the process making lots of people unhappy?)

my impression is that they do updates (like gfx 950 to 3100) because it probably costs next to nothing for them to do it...and then new product launches (i.e. new redesigns) are dependent more upon when the engineers finish the design and production, and not upon the marketing department. they released leopard not when marketing wanted to, but when they were able to finish it. they released the iphone not when they announced it, but when they thought their technical team could get it done. and since we don't know the status of delays with the new designs, we have no idea when they'll be able to finish them. i'm sure they'd give us what we want now if they could. imho, options are:

1. they are already ready and waiting for a suitable tuesday press event date. (unlikely because it always seems rumor sites overestimate apple's abilities...so i'd tend to underestimate the rumor sites by a bit.)

2. they won't be ready until the new year. (on a separate note, i don't understand why macworld is in january...shouldn't it be in november/december before the holiday season? just seems dumb to introduce any new products right after the holidays. )

3. they won't be ready until spring/summer, and in the meantime we'll just get speed/hdd/gfx bumps that cost them nothing to do but give us something more than we're getting now. maybe in that case we're looking at another macworld announcement that won't materialize until june...the iphone launch becoming a routine for new apple products.

but then, what do i know. i'm just guessing like y'all.

Well that would be a first that Apple has not released a consumer portable in the second half of the year before. It would also be the first time that Apple has released a consumer portable in January. There must be some other reason that current MacBook's have rebates that expire on the 12th of November.

Needless to say, I don't agree with you of course. :)

Laptops are not exactly holiday gift material. Finally, Steve needs something to trumpet in January.

Uhh...if you go to the Apple store near where I live, they are. A mom walks in with her kid, the kid says "that one" and she walks out with a MB and software boxes in tow.

And Steve WILL have something to trumpet in January. The new, sleek, sexy MBP with Penryn, upgraded everythings/alu, etc.

Marketing, people, marketing.

Exactly why brand new MB comes out in May (if it can't a Nov release buys them time).

You're absolutely right in that the upgraded MB costs them almost nothing (as the new components are prob now the same price as the old components anyway).

Dear All,

After 4 years of intensive reading MR this is my first post here.

Like many of you I'm Mac user since age of 12 and I'm really in the need (for my work) for a new laptop.

I can simply not buy an mb or an mbp pro right now since both of them have issues I dislike.

I bought a MB for my mother after I broke her Ibook. I like the looks but I really dislike the design of the current MB. It is not over thought like I'm used to with apple.

Dislikes MB:

-Insane sharp corners! After working more then 3 hours I have deep red stripes in my wrists. Hoe could they ever design a laptop like that! Unlike the good old Ibook that had round and friendly corners

-The keys. They make cracking noises. It sounds cheap

-The two plastic spacers on top of the screen. Strange enough I never heard anyone complain about it, but the two plastic spacers on top of the screen damage the surface below the keyboard. It is hard plastic and with transport the screen moves over the surface and after a while make permanent scratches and marks.

I love the MBP design, but I really want to be able to replace the hard drive myself.

Above reasons is why I desperately wait. Performance wise. The current MB and MBP do everything I need for my work.

With kind regards,
Bas

just out of curiosity...if all they plan to do is upgrade the macbook to gma x3100 graphics, with negligible updates to hdd/cpu and possibly led screens....why not do it for the leopard introduction?

it doesn't seem like those updates are good in their own right, but rather only for running leopard a little better. i don't see what the point is of waiting weeks after leopard to release those updates.

Thank you!

I just got a new imac about 6 weeks ago. So I am totally new to mac and it's communities. It seems like you could really go crazy trying to make sure you have the latest update at all times. If my PC was going to die, and I would have to buy a new one, why wouldn't I buy a macbook now if thats what I wanted and needed. Because right after this macbook is released, if it's not aluminum or ultra slim, there will be speculation surrounding that update. And the next and the next...
I need a small laptop with great battery life. I really like my imac so I'm going to go to the store tonight or tomorrow and grab a new macbook. If you spend your whole life waiting, you never get the joy of owning.

:apple:Thank you for that inspriational comment! I was debating on still waiting if they didn't put, at the LEAST, LED's in the Screen, but now, once the update happens, I'm just going to go out and buy my first macbook. I have been lingering around these fourms for about 1 1/2 years and now I think it's time to get off my PC and start enjoying Apple! I'm done waiting for updates! lol :apple:

It isn't good business to release too many products at the same time. The name of the game is constant publicity and if you can get media/consumer attention through releases at spaced out intervals you sustain interest and grab the spotlight more often. I'd give Apple a few weeks to ride the Leopard wave and then they'll put out something new.

Besides all MacBook releases have always been either in the late fall before Christmas, or in the spring to coincide with tax refunds and graduations :D

I'm hoping that we will see an update in the next week or so. I can't wait until January for my new Macbook!!:)

I'm sure some people knew Leopard was coming soon and held off purchasing a MB until it was out. Then you give Leopard a week or two to clean up the inventory so that you can drop new stuff. They could have started to drop supply of the older stuff a few months ago to be ready for Leopards release if they knew for sure there would be no problems with the new hardware. It wouldn't have been pretty if the hardware gave them some trouble and they didn't have adequate stock for Leopards release. This gave them leeway to get any kinks out of the way and clean up stock.

I'd guess that the type of person who would complain about a new macbook weeks after the new OS would also be the person to do their research and see it's best to wait.
The other average Joe would be happy with his new laptop and off you go.
However I could be wrong.

My birthdays on the 28th.... Should i get a mac book now ? my old pc is about to die..getting slower and slower making loud noises etc.... also whats my chances if a new mac book is coming out..before the 28th and in good time that i have it delivered....on time.
Also whats my chances that it would come with a blu - ray drive ?:p even if i had to pay extra as an option ...:D
surfing the net and watching movies are two main......things. i would use it for....apart from work.

I would really love a new laptop arrive in time...
what are my chances ? not many people are saying...blu ray drive as an option on the new mac book and seem not to think it will be on the next macbook as what i read on this forum. While many other brand manufactures are having it as a standard on even mid range laptops.... now or at least leave it as a option for more money.
