Mac mini: look at the QTVR of it at apple.com it looks like it has a power brick and some other brick ???

The two bricks are the power brick and an AirPort Express.

These Mac Minis should be about equal to an iBook in performance, correct?? I am ordering one of the 1.42 gHz ones for $579 with the education discount and moving my PC to the living room as a music server. I see where Apple went with the no keyboard and mouse thing but I will be buying a keyboard. Don't want my nice new Mac Mini to have to use an HP keyboard...

I agree that iWork should be included on new computers as well but they are still keeping AppleWorks 6 so a new user won't be totally without a word processor. Waiting for some reviews of iWork before I buy it.

http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/ The caption under the "gum" picture reads, "iPod Shuffle: Smaller than a pack of gum and much more fun.(2)"

(2) "Do not eat iPod shuffle."

hahahahaha just noticed that. it's great they have a sense of humour on their pages, unlike every other computer company on earth. something so much more inviting and friendly about apple.com, makes it a joy to use!

USB2 = FW400 = Not a problem.

oops. I only saw the mention of usb and assumed before reading the specs that it wan't 2.0.

arrgh -- still my powerbook has no usb 2

Mac Mini- how many RAM Slots?

The Mac Mini is certainly terrific.
How many RAM slots does it have?
I can't figure this out from the documentation on the Apple site.

I am concerned that to get it with 1 GB of RAM, it is an extra $425. [I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that price] Probably most consumers do not want to open the case, so this could hurt sales.

For myself, if it has two slots, I would get the 512 MB version and then throw in another 512. But if it has one slot, obviously I'd have to go with the 256 version and then buy a 1 GB chip.

But it says in the tech specs that the memory should be installed by an Apple dealer or you void the warranty! "5. Memory upgrade must be performed by an Apple Authorized Service provider."

And this is confirmed by looking at the "Learn More" section under the Memory option of the "Buy Now" page.

This increases the cost of the machine!

How do people feel about this?

Mac Mini - no user servicable memory.

I love the Mac Mini - except for the fact that you cannot add your own RAM to it and Apple STILL wants insane $$$$ for it.

They do say that an Apple authorized service center can install it for you though. Anyone know what that would cost if you brought in your own SO-DIMM?

Point 01:

Ok so you called it the iPod Shuffle...
What a good way to say "ipod for people who can't afford the ipod"...
Come on, why dont you call it iPod cheap or something else but please don't fool us. You think that someone with enough money to buy an ipod or ipod mini would buy this? no for sure, well, not because life is random!!! i can shuffle with the regular ipod too so life is random for me also, so why then not be honest? I know that people who buy apple have always been exclusive, but this is too much, are you ashamed of having created a product for the masses?

Point 02:

iWork. I was waiting for it. I hate MS Office. Too heavy too old too microsoft. So this is the alternative? good! but where is the spreadsheet?
I'll have to buy office tomorrow. can't wait for iWork 2006 hoping...

thanks,

Simon

Great Macworld keynote. Awesome stuff. It would be cool if there was a spreadsheet apps in iWork.

The future of apple is a bright one. I called the san francisco store and they have the ipod shuffle in stock .... might have to use my apple store gift cards today.

Ordered an iPod shuffle without even blinking.

Perfect for my running.

The Mac mini? - Awesome, but with usual LAME video card.

I'll probably get one of those for the office machine later, hopefully with an updated card. they will be selling a boatload of these, though. They're beautiful.

Like the new iPod shuffle... ideal for walks and workouts...

Love the Mac mini... gonna make it easier to get more PC users to switch (I already have two targets).

Don't know if I'll upgrade to iLife '05, just yet, as iTunes is the only part I use on a day to day basis (have just started using iPhoto for real, and this may change my mind).

Like iWork, but it's dissapointed that it's not included on the Mac mini.

Bit sad that ThinkSecret has leaked everything up front, though, would be nice if SJ had a surprise up his sleeve...

Expecting minor PowerBook and iPod mini bumps next week.

Good keynote. Not quite as exciting as in years' past, but that was to be expected when we pretty much knew what was coming. No wonder TS got sued. They owned the product line-up.

iLife '05 - Even at $79 it's still a great deal for 5 great apps. Will order it as soon as the Apple Store calms down a little, definitely.

iWork - $79? That's cheaper than Keynote was all by itself. If I didn't already have Office X....I'll have to see it in person at the store before I buy.

iPod shuffle - Good choice to have a 512MB and 1GB, esp. since they didn't up the mini to 5GB as predicted. Love the pricing, design and the size. Would have liked to see a screen, but that won't keep me from trying to talk the wife into buying two of these babies.

Mac mini - Absolutely awesome! If you're whining about the 32MB GPU, you probably aren't the target market for this Mac. Whaddaya want, a dual 3.0GHz G5 for $499? Sure, it would have been great to get a keyboard, mouse, and AE card included for $499, but this is a solid bare bones computer that fits the needs of the average PC switching consumer, for a truly revolutionary (for Apple) price.

The do not eat iPod shuffle message is hilarious.

Only thing that seems lacking is no Excel counterpart in iWork.

I was hoping the iLife '05 update would either be free or cheap for those that bought iLife '04. I think having to pay full freight for an update to a product you just bought 12 months ago is a bit steep.

All the stuff looks great, though.

I'm a little disappointed too...I would have liked to see an upgrade for ilife '04, although the price is still rather low. I like the iphoto upgrades and imovie, not too sure about the others, why no update on itunes?

has anyone seen or know of an option for itunes to send files to another mac on your network? (through itunes)

regards

Final Cut Express HD

Now that Final Cut Express has HDV how about HDV support in Final Cut Pro? Is that coming soon? Final Cut 5? Any thoughts?

New "Cube"

I would say the Mac Mini is basically the "cube" coming back. Of course, it is much smaller. Very neat looking. Looks to be to be completely user unserviceable, which might be ok at this price. I don't have a monitor since I had an iMac before, so after pricing it out with a 20" Apple LCD (Gotta have the stuff match or it looks crappy in the house) I would be much better off going with an iMac G5. I guess however the only benefit going with this set up is in 2 to 3 years you can get a new computer and you don't have to toss your Apple LCD. That is a good thing. Poor graphics card though and performance is unknown. If it runs like a 1.24Ghz to 1.5 Ghz Powerbook, it will be fine. I can imagine the biggest response will be....

The Mac Mini should have been a G5!!!

We will see. The iPod Shuffle is kind of cool, but looks like something I might loose!

iWork...it is a good idea, but I doubt Microsoft is shaking in their boots on this thing taking out Office 2004.

Overall some cool things...good Macworld.

Good Price and it will get more people to switch but the fact that it includes no keyboard, mouse, has a 32mb graphics card and maxs out at 1gb of ram kinda sucks...but the price is soooo Sweet...its a decent low-end machine

For the love of god people this is a baseline Mac! You want more then 1GB of RAM??!?! Why? The average user doesn’t need that kind of RAM. Keyboard mouse? Again this is for a switcher. Most have a keyboard. Have a mouse.
Is it so unbelievably difficult to understand that this isn’t for the people on this site?

Just look at http://www.apple.com/macmini/ What does it say? This is a switcher system and they are going to sell an *** load of them.

all in all, it was a good even IMO. just good though. nothing amazing, though the mac mini seems nice the v card is crap... but they arent targeting us people who want nice graphics cards and 8gb of ram, but they should offer a high end model, and how about that $99 applecare? cant go wrong at that price. but no new powerbooks or phone:(

Shuffle... Owned

Well everybody that was complaining about it not having a screen really did not have faith in Apple. THat jewel does not need a screen there are only 240 songs max. I own an iPod and I alway listen to it on shuffle mode so for sure I am looking into getting this. I'm really happy that Apple decided to conquer the last mp3 continent. Watch out Sony, Zen, Dell... Here comes apple... (damn it I know I should have bought shares when they were cheap)

sorry, I would have liked to see a FREE upgrade for iLife '05 - * brain fart *

No keyboard. No mouse.

People are wondering about the lack of keyboard and mouse, but I thought that this was supposed to be a machine for switchers, so we assume that they already have USB versions of those (plus a monitor.) I kind of like the idea of using my old keyboard and mice instead of having them sit in a box in the closet. Although, with a bluetooth keyboard, this would make a very nice music/picture server for the home theater system.

Also, IMO I like the graphics on the "iboxes." They needed to change them up a bit. They're funky, organic and consumer friendly.

Great Mini Mandrills! No doubt. Can't believe how many current Mac users here are excited and jumping on this bandwagon. Unless you're replacing an inferior Mac system then this wasn't made or designed for you. I suppose it has it's place for some current Mac users but it's primarily aimed at current PC users.

Heh. I'm glad SOMEONE remembered the concept of market segments. For the rest...y'all gotta remember that one size does NOT fit all.

THe Mac mini competes fairly well against the cheapie $400 Dells et al; it's much easier to swallow a $100 difference than a $800 or $900 one (and the specs aren't that bad for a sub $500 computer). And the iPod shuffle has a lot of segments it can fill.

What's happening here is that Apple is diversifying its offerings and are targetting distinct sub-sections of its audience; it's using its dominance in a major market and is stepping out JUST A BIT to capture side markets to its main holdings. It's what Dell did in the 90s to capture ITS market.

Well done....a grand slam home run.

Good stuff for the beginner and intermediate user (and apparently the money-making section for Apple and Jobs), but now it's time for them to deliver to the Professional end again (the ones who kept them alive during their lean years). JMO :D

Appleworks vs. iWork

I'm not so sure that iWork is truly a replacement for Appleworks. Looking at the specs for the new Mac mini (which I will likely be buying when the store is accessable again), it says that it includes Appleworks preinstalled on the system.

I don't like the idea that the memory on the Mac mini is upgradeable by Authorized Apple service folks though, but on the same note, for the target audience of this box, it makes things much simpler.

On a side note, the educational discount on the Mac mini seems to be $20. Not much, but then again, it doesn't cost much to begin with!
