Thanks for the vote of confidence, wdlove. I see the Hingham store now is listing individuals job openings. This is the starting of the usual 3-6 months period between these listings and the store opening. Let's hope there are no unexpected construction delays this time. No such listings yet for the Midtown, Dallas, or Irvine stores.

You must be referring to the South Shore Mall in Braintree. Doesn't sound as though they will be open by the Tiger party.

Apple is now listing the usual individual job openings for the Dallas - Northpark store. It joins the Hingham store among the four newly announced store locations in recruiting personnel for impending openings this year. The Midtown - New York and Irvine stores have not yet begun to look for staff.

Bullring store in Birmingham to open on 4/29

Apple has officially announced the grand opening of the Bullring store to coincide with the release of Tiger. The second store in Europe will open on April 29th at 6:00 pm.

Nice timing, aranhamo. I was just gonna leave a post asking you if you had been down to the Gateway to check on the progress.

I went to the Gateway website a couple weeks ago and there was a pdf file with a map telling where the new expansion was going to be.

At least construction has began, but it still seems very unlikely that there will be a June 1st opening. I really want to make it down there for the Opening as I've never been to one before. The problem is I need to make sure and put in for vacation time at work so I can get down there. Hopefully an updated opening date comes soon.

Yeah, they've had the expansion on the map since the Gateway first opened, but apparently it just got approved late last year. I also understand that the city relented and is going to allow Nordstroms to relocate to the Gateway. Renovations on Crossroads and ZCMI should start soon; if those malls have to shut down for the renovations (which I think they will, since the renovations will swap the locations of retail space and parking), then the Gateway should get even more traffic.

I too doubt a June opening, since all they've done is break up the asphalt. A retail building is being built in front of the old D&RG station, and I think it's been close to a year that construction has been going on there and it's nowhere near finished.

online is the way to buy

It's fine if you know what you want to buy, but if you're one of the millions that don't have experience with Apple products and want to take a close up look at them, the brick-n-mortar stores play an important role. Seems to be working too as the market share is going up for the first time. That's not all from the stores, but they help.

two more locations revealed

Apple's "Search Jobs" web page has begun listing two new locations. They are Fashion Square mall in Sherman Oaks, California, and South Hills Village in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This continues a trend of expansion in the LA metro area and adds a second store to the Pittsburgh area.

edit: ok, with all these new stores I thought I'd update the 2005 store list. Here it is below:

  1. Nagoya Sakae, Japan - opened 1/22

  3. The Gardens at Palm Beach - Palm Beach Gardens, Florida - to open 4/23
  4. Bullring - Birmingham, England - to open 4/29
  5. South Shore Plaza - Braintree, Massachusetts
  6. Century City - Los Angeles, California - to open in May
  7. Lincoln Road - Miami Beach, Florida
  8. Pioneer Place - Portland, Oregon
  9. La Cantera - San Antonio, Texas
  10. Green Hills - Nashville, Tennessee
  11. Woodland - Grand Rapids, Michigan
  12. The Woodlands - Houston, Texas
  13. Gateway Mall - Salt Lake City, Utah
  14. Yorkdale - Toronto, Canada
  15. Bluewater - Kent, England
  16. Crabtree Valley - Raleigh, North Carolina
  17. Bridgeport Village - Tualatin, Oregon
  18. Manhattan Village - Manhattan Beach, California
  19. Penn Square - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

It may be an old fashioned idea, but I prefer the personal touch. Enjoy having the chance of a personal relationship with the staff. Have a chance to view and try out all of the Mac line. When a problem arises, there is nothing quite like face to face help.

Or if you just want to go down to the store and get it right then, not wait for it to be delivered. Or if the UPS (or whoever) guy won't leave packages at your house and you don't want to drive out to the middle of nowhere to pick it up at the distribution warehouse.

heh heh.. Do I sense a personal experience here? ;)

But, I completely agree with you. If I have a choice of buying online or at a physical store, I'll definately go with the store. I'll even pay up to ten dollars more if I can pick it up personally, just to know that I'm getting what I want. I still buy online all the time, but it's because I can't find it retail or because I'm saving a LOT online.

:) Yeah... I can't even remember what the product was, but I specifically gave UPS instructions that they could leave the package, but still the delivery guy refused because I live in an apartment. So I had to take a couple hours off of work to drive out to their warehouse. But I got a package once from Airborne, with specific instructions to get a signature, and they left the package at my door anyway. Go figure.

What are the largest markets in the U.S. to still not have Apple stores? I live near Omaha, NE (metro area over 800,000; over 1 million people within a 65 mile radius) yet the nearest Apple stores are in Des Moines (significantly smaller market) and Kansas City, both more than two hours away. I remember reading once that Omaha and Pittsburgh were the largest U.S. cities to not have any Apple stores.

This was posted by Sahey on February 25th 2005. I lived in Omaha for 10 years, left in 1984.

Last, here is the list of top 20 US metro areas and consolidated metro areas without Apple stores. This is based on the 2000 census and leaves out San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Virginia
New Orleans, Louisiana
Greensboro/Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Providence, Rhode Island
Louisville, Kentucky
Greenville/Spartanburg, South Carolina
Dayton, Ohio
Fresno, California
Birmingham, Alabama
Tulsa, Oklahoma
Omaha, Nebraska
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Knoxville, Tennessee
El Paso, Texas
Bakersfield, California
Allentown/Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
Harrisburg/ Lebanon, Pennsylvania
Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania
Toledo, Ohio
Baton Rouge, Louisiana

I'd only add to wdlove's post that there are a few other metro areas larger than those on the list without Apple stores, but they are scheduled to open stores this year. San Antonio, Salt Lake City, Nashville, Rochester, Grand Rapids, and Oklahoma City all fall in this category. I would also add that Des Moines is the only smaller market than Omaha with a store. As you can tell by the list, there are only 10 metro areas larger than Omaha without a store or one planned. All of that should bode well for Omaha's chances of getting a store soon.

ifoAppleStore is posting the grand opening on June 4th of the Bridgeport Village store in Tualatin, Oregon. This Portland area store is the second in the state and the metro area with one other store scheduled to open in the downtown Portland Pioneer Place mall later this year.

Although Apple's own web pages don't reflect it, there are now job listings for the Irvine (Irvine, California), Fashion Square (Sherman Oaks, California), and the South Hills (Pittsburgh, PA) stores on Monster.com's listings for Apple jobs. This completes all the announced locations' postings for individual jobs and confirms the likelihood of these stores openings this year.

Thank you for the update Sayhey. Noticed that there aren't any listings for the South Shore Mall, and still no opening date yet. Did notice that there are opening for Hingham, MA. So I guess that we are still looking at sometime this year.

my god, i live in winston-salem and no, we don't have a store. so you're telling me apple is putting a store in raleigh, when there's one in durham? and not one in the triad area!?!? this is ridicules!

The Store Manager position at South Shore has been filled for a while, a prerequisite for opening the store, but I've seen no clue of an opening date. I keep checking the Mall website and the local papers (on line) but nothing yet. Hingham looks to be a Oct.-Nov. opening.

Yes, that's what it looks like. I've seen nothing, nor heard any rumors of a Greensboro/Winston-Salem store yet. The good news is that stores are going into communities the size of yours, so you can bet that Apple is scouting for a good location. When that could translate into an actual store is anyone's guess at this stage.

Wow, I'm surprised Pittsburgh is getting another store just a year after Shadyside. But I won't complain since it gives me another chance at attending a grand opening (completely missed the first one). :)
