Gateway

I went by the Gateway again today and now they have big signs around the construction with artists' renderings and signs saying "Coming Fall 2005"... so I'd say the June opening is definitely out.

Well, I guess that's something. I figured June was out, but now I'll be surprised if it's this year at all. Oh well.

Sayhey, don't know if you have heard anything more. But from another source a person said that the wallboard was still up with black paper and Apple name. The individual inquired at the information desk and was told that the South Shore Mall Apple was due to open in August. Got the impression about rescheduling.

August may set a record for delay of an opening. Sorry, to hear it is taking even longer than expected, wdlove. At least there is finally a date - however remote.

Pentagon City Mall

I live right next door to the Pentagon City Mall and saw a comining soon Apple sign across a closed store front! I'm happy about having an Apple store 20min away at Tysons Corner but one next door would be amazing!! :D

Still concerned since this isn't an official announcement by Apple. How far ahead should we hear officially?

I won't buy anything from an Apple Store because I object to their policy of charging "restocking" fees for returned merchandise. Instead I buy from a mail-order company (Mac Connection) and get better customer service, don't have to pay tax, and can return the items with no restocking fee. Why Apple Stores can't match this level of service for their premium prices is beyond me. They operate more like a shady discount wharehouse store.

That's nice.

Now - back to the thread, looks like Annapolis is August/September! :D

Apple is as secret in this as in any other aspect of their business. Usually they tell the public 7-10 days before the opening, but the Nagoya store was opened with 3 days notice, if memory serves me right. There have also been cases of more time, but beyond two weeks is rare. Look at the retail page for the official announcement of a date.

Record delay

What would you say is the record delay for an opening right now? Is that the delay between posting job openings and opening the store, or the delay between the official announcement and opening the store, or what?

Apple is now listing the usual individual job openings for the Dallas - Northpark store. It joins the Hingham store among the four newly announced store locations in recruiting personnel for impending openings this year.

What is quite odd is that the new Northpark location will only be literally 3 miles north of the current Knox Street store. As large of a metro area as Dallas/Fort Worth is in terms of square mileage, you'd think they'd spread them out a bit more across the area. At least the upcoming Southlake location will finally put a store in the Tarrant County region of D/FW and it'll be a good 30+ minute or so drive away from any of the other stores around the area.

I'm referring to the time from the initial listing of job openings to the opening of the store. This usually takes from 3-6 months with it stretching into 7 months not that unusual. The high-profile stores often taking longer. What we have in the South Shore store in Braintree is a regular-sized store that, if opened in August, will be thirteen months from posting to realization. A good part of that is because of construction delays and an expansion of the store's footprint midway through the effort, but it is still an amazingly long time.

I think Apple is probably more concerned with shopping patterns than evenly spreading stores throughout the area. If Northpark and Knox Street have a large enough flow of shoppers, it makes sense even with the proximity of the two.

With two more stores coming to Dallas, one to Houston, and one to San Antonio it looks like Apple is finally becoming serious about its Texas retail effort.

I'm hoping that this delay along with the increase in square footage, might be a positive sign. Maybe it will be something greater than anything else we have in the Boston area.

And I'm certainly not complaining, I think it's great. I just found the location of the new Northpark store to be a bit curious. Hey, the more stores here the better in my opinion. :)

Then SLC would be close, but not quite as long probably. Job postings for SLC appeared in December, so if it opens in the fall, then it'll be close to a year. I just hope SLC is decent-sized. I want something with plenty of shelf space for a good software selection; that way I can quit going to CompUSA. :)

An opening in September would be fine with me. Maybe would have a chance to actually meet. Having a theater there would be awesome, although they are usually just at Flag Ship stores. One can only dream. Getting two more Apple Stores in the area should help with wait times at the Genius Bar. Do you happen to have ProCare?

yea would be nice to meet fellow MR people, if not we should have a bostonian party somewhere and meet up. No, I wish i had Procare. my brother's G5 is on a crack and needs to be brought into rehab, and the next appointment is at 8:30!!! and its 5:20 now... Apple doesn't seem to advertise Procare that much seems worth it.

I almost caught you before the EDIT. haha

I dont think theres anything official for the Braintree store yet. I thought that place would have been open a long time ago. But taking over additional space and the delays have made this wayyy too long. I thought I was going to be able to try out the PMG5 there before my purchase and talk to them about it because I wouldnt get the time of day at CompUSA at their Apple section.

But I have already bought my PM so I guess ill only drop in there to see what the place looks like.

It would be pretty funny if the store in Hingham were to open before the Braintree one. I am sure it wont but that would be funny I think.

The day the Braintree one opens, half of the MR community will be very happy. We should have a party before/after the opening
I want it to open in September so i can skip class and go :p
