SLC Store

Well, since I didn't get the job, I guess it won't hurt to post this. I interviewed for a job at the SLC store this week and the guy said he thought it would open sometime near the end of November. They turned me down for the job though. :-(

Sorry to hear about it, aranhamo.

Those have been around in malls for years. Obviously it doesn't have much of an effect on their sales :).

Staten Island store to open Oct. 15th

Apple has officially announced the opening of the new Staten Island store on Oct. 15th at 10:00 am. As usual the opening will be accompanied by a T-shirt giveaway to the first 1000 people entering the store. This will be the second store within the borders of New York City (with the upcoming Midtown and Flatiron stores still in the works) and the 11th store in the NYC metro area.

I just got an e-mail about this. I'm psyched and it will help ease the pain from the Yankee loss.

Yeah, my dad just told me about this store today. I didn't even know it was coming. He has not visited yet so he could not tell me anything more about it. Anyone here visited the Florida Mall store yet? I hope it's a little bigger than the one at Millenia Mall . . .

I was there the day it opened. It's a much bigger store than the one at the Mall at Millenia, similar to the International Plaza store in Tampa.

Anyone know what the starting pay is at most of the Apple stores? Here in Hawaii things seem to always be different then the other states. Mostly pay...

When I interviewed recently, they told me that if hired I would be making $8 or $9 an hour. Didn't get hired though. :-(

Wow! thats not much. I think they get credit towards getting Apple stuff.

Maybe the pay varies by location. It would seem that high cost of living areas would get hight pay.

Low pay?

Well it is a mall job after all. They're not expecting people to make careers out of working at an Apple retail store.

They do offer deep discounts on Apple stuff though. I think I remember the guy said like 30 or 40% on two desktops and two laptops per year, and 10 iPods.

I went to the opening of the Staten Island store this morning. Got a free T-shirt and picked up an iSight. I think that store is going to do very well.

The New York Post is reporting Apple has dropped its plans for a store in NYC's Flatiron district. While the Post intimates this is because of Apple's refocus on the GM Building, it appears Apple has retreated from its plans after meeting with problems getting a store design approved in the historic district. The two stores were planned independently and the decision to drop the Flatiron store likely has nothing to do with the new store in the GM Building.

October 16, 2005 -- Apple is retreating from a planned retail store in the Flatiron District to focus on a larger location in the General Motors Building, sources said.
Apple had signed a lease for a 2,500-square-foot space at 136 Fifth Avenue, between 18th and 19th Streets, but has since put the lease up for disposition, according to a source.

Apple has decided to instead focus on a 20,000-square-foot store under construction in the General Motors Building at Fifth Avenue, between 57th and 58th streets.

The site will be Apple's second Manhattan location — the company opened a store in the city's trendy SoHo district in July 2002....

edit: while there still is a location listed on Apple's website for a Flatiron store, there are no job listings now for this location. This would tend to confirm the Post's story, as it is unlikely that Apple would have filled all the positions for this store and they had previously individual job listings for the location.

monster.com has new job listings for the upcoming stores in the GM Building (NYC,) Suburban Square (Philadelphia,) and Southlake Town Square (Dallas.) It looks like 1st quarter 2006 openings for all.

Apple has announced the Oct. 29th grand opening of the new Apple store "The Oaks" in Thousand Oaks, California. The store will open at 10:00 am and give away T-shirts to the first 1100 people in line. This is the 12th store in the LA metro area and the 27th in the state.

Yay! This store is 5 miles from my house! Too bad I already picked up my 5G.

Two questions for those who have been to a Grand Opening.

1) How early would you have to get there to be one of the first 1000 visitors? Waaaay before opening or maybe even a couple of hours later?
2) How much of a madhouse is it? Would it be safe to bring my 2 year old along with me?

Probably someone in California would know from past store openings, about the best timing. Definitely at least three hours though. Store opening are a lot of fun. A great time in line meeting other Mac people.

From the Apple events that I've been to, it would be perfectly safe to take your two year old.

Thanks! Not sure I can get the little one out the door before an hour or so before the opening, but will probably give it a shot.

Hide the credit cards! ;)

Congratulations! Apple Stores in California are going after the level of penetration Starbucks has in Seattle, it seems. I'm not complaining though :) (well, build an Apple Store in Vancouver, while you're at it, Apple).

From my experience with the San Francisco store, getting there early isn't even enough. However, this isn't a flagship store and I think the novelty has worn off, especially in California.

1. I think if you got there one or two hours early, it would be unlikely that you'd have more than a few hundred people waiting, and even that number might not be all too likely. Once the store actually opens, however, being one of the first 1000 is a lot tougher than you might think. You should definitely be there when they open the doors so that you can get through the register lineup faster.

2. It depends on the size of the store (if it's small, it'd be extra crowded and noisy), but I think it's perfectly fine to bring your kid. I've never heard of any sort of mosh pit like scenario, especially since that's not really Apple scenester style ;). Madhouses are more of an East Coast thing. People are too tightly wound over there. Thousand Oaks is pretty laid back.
