Take this for what's it's worth. I personally don't believe the Apple store employee... I went into the Oak Brook IL store yesterday, thinking that MAYBE since 10.8 came out, the Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter might have been released too. No such luck. The employee went in back to check, came back out and said SOME stores have received them, but Oak Brook has not. I don't believe this at all, but I thought I'd pass this on in case there was some truth this this.

The last time I checked, there were 31 days in July, not 26.

Right, but Apple rarely releases anything on weekends, which leaves just Monday (30th) and Tuesday (31st) of next week.

I suppose they might have wanted to get Mountain Lion out first and/or needed an extra week to manufacture or test these adapters, but I'm not optimistic about this "July" release.

My new rMBP is awesome, but I sure wish I could get my data off my old, almost-dead PowerBook.

My thoughts also, it's a miss on Apple's part not to have a bridge between their old technology of Firewire to the new Thunderbolt upon release of the products.

For now I am using File Sharing over WiFi between my old and new computers.

I went to northbrook court and he said they have none and don't know when its coming out. I also called old orchard and she said they have nothing listed in their system.

True, but I think a lot of us were hoping that it would be timed to match the Mountain Lion release. They still have until Tuesday to meet the "July" deadline.

I sure hope so. (FWIW, the rMBP specs page still says "July" for this adapter.)

Target Mode

You can use thunderbolt to thunderbolt in Target mode

----------

first of all thunderbolt runs 5 times faster than firewire.... and it does a sweet job hooking up in Target Mode.. Thunder to thunder....!

Before beaking off...

I cannot for the life of me think why anyone would want either of those.

Is there a computer in existence that has a thunderbolt port, but no FireWire or Ethernet ports?

I have a 2011 iMac 27", and a Focusrite Saffire 56 audio interface, which insists on being alone on the firewire buss. Having another firewire buss available is very valuable to me. So think just a little bit harder...

Where. Is. The. Thunderbolt. To. Firewire. Adapter?????

My brand new shiny Retina MBP is almost useless if I can't hook it up to my external hd for time machine backups, not to mention restoring all of my stuff to the new one! The apple site still shows it as being "available in July". Well, it's July 31st! grrrrr:mad:

And yes, I did send an email to Apple feedback about it:)

So why not just get a USB 3 drive? You can get a 3TB USB 3 drive at Costco for $139. Another option is move the exsiting drives from FW enclosures to USB 3 enclosures. You can get those enclosures at NewEgg, MicroCenter, and others.

Face it, when Apple dropped FW from the RMBPs...the handwriting is on the wall. Move to USB 3 and/or thunderbolt.

Yup I've been waiting for it too. Last day for a July availability. Tick-tock.

Although not a mission critical piece of equipment for me, it certainly would have made things easier.

It would have made setting up my new rMBP easier. I was planning on running Migration Assistant using an external Firewire drive. I ended up doing it via Ethernet. Thank God the Ethernet adapter was available, or I'm not sure how I would have done it. I guess a USB connection...2.0 was all I had without buying a new external.

I use a Time Capsule for backups, but I also have an external Firewire drive for SuperDuper. Still waitin' for that adapter to do my clone backups.

:apple:

Starting to get later in the day. This Tim cook "Tomorrow." quote is pretty interesting though.

Sure is. But whoever wrote that (I doubt it was Tim Cook even if the mail is genuine) was probably wrong too. Because, wasn't it this page that until a few moments ago said "July"? Well, now it doesn't.

Could be a good sign... Or, a delay...
