How 'bout this: Pull the drive out of the old one, plug it in to a $19 Seagate GoFlex USB 3 adapter, transfer the data, and put the drive back.

New Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire 800 adapter

Perhaps the Tim Cook email was real after all. The adapter really did become available to order "Tomorrow".
It is available online now at the Apple Store. Currently the status is "shipping in 1-3 days." I just ordered one. At the stage where you choose shipping options, it still says "unavailable" but the order processed and I have a projected delivery date of August 6-8. The long shipping lead time leads me to believe they may be coming from China and that there's no US inventory yet. The "pick up at store" option is currently unavailable.
I'm actually pleasantly surprised that Apple is able to cram everything into an adapter cable, and to do it for $29. The Seagate Thunderbolt adapter for their GoFlex drives is huge, has a good sized circuit board in side it and costs nearly $90.

Just ordered mine...3:18am in Chicago...and I sorta don't mind being up at this hour all of a sudden!
It says "Page Not Available" now. Hopefully this isn't another "Mountain Lion Up-to-Date" issue.
Anyway, maybe it will become available for real today, July 32nd.
And at 8:13am, the link is no longer there. Can't find the item on the store page.
Eastern time I assume? I just checked going to the link from Southern California at 5:15AM local (8:15 Eastern), the product is available and shipping in 1-3 days.
It doesn't appear to be indexed on the site yet as a search for "MD464ZM" or "Thunderbolt" doesn't return it.

Reset Safari (probably had nothing to do with it) and finally linked to page. Tried on my work PC and same message - Can not find page. Weird. Anyway, ordered. Now if they keep the shipment times, I will once again be happy, happy, happy.

Hmm...I've tried resetting caches on safari & chrome on my rMBP, and IE on my work PC....still getting "Page not found" - as of 8:40 EST

Well I managed to just order it through the UK online Education Store, though it was listed on the main UK Online Store too...
Says it ships 1-3 days. Gonna stop back by my local Apple retail store to double check

Placed my order thru the iOS app a few minutes ago says est delivery aug 7-9 so guess we'll see. The pick up in store option was not available either
yeah they're still able to be ordered via the apple store app for iOS... not sure if that means anything is actually going to be shipped to Anyone that purchased today... but we'll see.
The rMBP page went from saying the fw adapter would be available in July to not showing it at all and now it's back up and just says sold separately

Stayed up until it showed up in the store, added to cart, walked away to grab CC. When I got back it said "Some items in your cart have been removed because the quantity requested is not available at this time." The adapter was deleted from the cart and the product page was no longer found. So I went to sleep.
Now it shows up in chrome but not safari. I think I will just wait for my local store gets some in stock.
