If Apple doesn't put AirTag tech in the remote, someone needs to be fired. That's all I really want, and a visualizer that goes with the music.
They have remotes cases that allow you to attach one.

I know not perfect, but Apple designed a house to test their products…so in a way they test what normal people do…which means they are not normal there.

We haven’t had a TV for a long time, but we’re possibly getting one along with an Apple TV to go with it. Now that I’m looking at that render, I realize I need to hurry with my purchase before the current model is discontinued, because I’m definitely not going to buy a version with a camera.

I'm curious how many people have their Apple TV buried either in a cabinet or behind a tv. For wall mounted tv's, it's easier just to stick it to the back of a tv or tucked away rather than have it out and exposed. I can't imagine the FaceTime camera being used much unless people are installing them in conference rooms (which I do see value in)

I can’t imagine using a FaceTime camera on an Apple TV unless it’s a strong telephoto lens. That’s because I sit at least eight feet away from the TV set. And I am not going to reposition my Apple TV box. It’s just fine where it is. Meanwhile this is kind of moot because that lens would get a heavy piece of tape over it, pronto.

There needs to be more than a spec bump to make an upgrade worth it, the current model is already overkill.
It was noticeably faster and better for plex. More responsive and fluid. I can see the quality improvements and considering it's all I use, for the $100-$200, it's a no brainer. It's not just about hardware but improved software capabilities.

do people actually buy this these days? most TVs now have smart features that include app for AppleTV....

Apple needs to do a lot more. They have milked their customer loyalty for 10+ years and people are getting tired.
TV smart features suck and are always obsolete. ATV has incredibly better functionality and capability. It syncs perfectly across multiple devices. I have two in my home, one at my bay home, one I travel with and plug in at hotels. Everything is the same everywhere. Integrates with my surround sound receiver and speakers. Unless you're just using it janky like there's never a reason to go with some android based TV os. Heck the remote alone makes it worth it. It's like $150 and integrates so much better content than anything else.

Rumors suggest that Apple is working on an updated version of the Apple TV that's slated for launch later this year. Information about the upcoming device that was found in Apple code indicates that it will be equipped with the A17 Pro chip.

There have been multiple rumors about a new Apple TV coming in 2025 with a new A-series processor, but it hasn't been clear which chip Apple would use until now.

The A17 Pro was designed for the iPhone 15 Pro models, but Apple still makes it for the iPad mini 7.

The current Apple TV 4K has an A15 Bionic chip, so the upgrade to the A17 Pro will bring substantial performance improvements. The A17 Pro supports Apple Intelligence, plus it can run console-quality games with advanced graphics effects.

Little else is known about the upcoming Apple TV, but it is expected to get an Apple-designed Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chip. Apple might introduce the new Apple TV in September alongside new iPhone models, but it could also be held until later in 2025.

I was hoping for the A18 so we could get AV1 hardware decoding

I have M4 iPad Pro and it barely runs RE2 on 30 fps with Metal upscaler.

Now Apple TV is the pinnacle when it comes to living room entertainment. Apple simply doesn’t have the hardware to make it a console/tv gaming replacement.

Is an AirTag necessary though? I think all it needs is a little beeping speaker to find it in the couch cushion, etc. It's not leaving the room, is it?

a15 -> a17 being the jump between an iphone 13 & 15 doesnt really seem like that big of a deal. leftover M1s? at least an A18? if it's supposed to be a part of apple's jump into more console gaming presence seems silly to give people a device they generally keep for years but has old hardware.

not to mention, sure it has apple intelligence support, but even apple said it cant do the full suite of what their apple intelligence does, so they'll give new apple TV purchasers apple intelligence and immediately tell them their product has restrictions? plus they havent finished developing the refreshed siri, so will TV users be eventually limited in that functionality as well? seems silly.

I would like storage that allows us to download our purchases.

apple does not give out storage cheaply, even when the SSD market works in a buyer's favor. apple TV's with nice-sized storage would cost a ridiculous amount of cash and you'd ultimately still feel pretty limited.

while i'd also love what you're asking for, i suggest trying something i, and many others do: run some form of local mass storage to load all of your multimedia content onto and point the apple tv to it so it can play it all easily. Infuse is a hugely popular app with lots of format support, a great interface, and is super well maintained by its developers with frequent updates. if you buy into its pro subscription, it applies across all of your devices.

i use Plex as my movie/tv show manager, and Infuse has support to load plex libraries. i repurposed an old PC with a 7th gen intel CPU to be a media server that current has....idk somewhere around 40tb or so (maybe more, cant remember off the top of my head) of content, most of which are really high quality blu ray remuxes that load in a snap via ethernet across my network. i also have an apple tv remotely at another place that loads my Plex content via Infuse and works beautifully.

obviously not quite as quick and easy as "give me more space to load my iTunes purchases locally" but the actual work to get that all setup is pretty mundane, you can also accomplish it a bit easier by buying something like a Synology NAS or similar product from another company, and just pop hard drives into it.

I'll glady pass at an AI spyware box in my house. Also "console level games" means at best Playstation 3/Xbox 360. It's like saying my watch has supercomputer capabilities (from 1980).

Also I'd give it about 0% chance it comes with a camera with apple having a perfectly serviceable solution in continuity cam.

If they price it at $129.99 without making two variants and it still includes 128GB storage and Ethernet, this would be a solid refresh.

But I’m picking it up either way. Need an updated Apple TV for the bedroom. Mine is still the A8 HD-only version. Time to get the 4K.
