I’m ready for an upgrade. Hopefully it has more HD capacity and ability for apps, casual gaming, home automation...

I'm curious how many people have their Apple TV buried either in a cabinet or behind a tv. For wall mounted tv's, it's easier just to stick it to the back of a tv or tucked away rather than have it out and exposed. I can't imagine the FaceTime camera being used much unless people are installing them in conference rooms (which I do see value in)
Mine is literally stuck to the ceiling above my projector! 😅

The A17 pro was great…. two years ago. In a couple months it will be 2 generations behind. And Apple wants us to play games „console-like“ on this outdated hardware?

There needs to be more than a spec bump to make an upgrade worth it, the current model is already overkill.
I doubt they're primarily targeting the existing userbase with these ATV spec bumps. A8 iPhones only go up to iOS 12, A8 iPads up to iPadOS 15 but the Apple TV A8 will still get tvOS 26 - meaning it'll get at least 11 years of software support.

But if you're new to Apple TV or if you buy an additional Apple TV for another room or whatever, it's nice to get a model with more up-to-date specs, especially if the price stays the same.

The ATV has not had an HD for a wery long time , if ever, it''s been some kind of solid state device for a very long time. What do you mean "ability for apps" tvos has had the app store for ages, I must be missing something here, and no this was not intended as a needless nit pick (ok the HD vs solid state might be) I'm genuinely unsure what you mean with the app ability statement

The only thing this thing needs is to support bitstreaming instead of sending everything as PCM

Exactly, no bitstream, no buy. Why should I switch to the AppleTV if my Nvidia Shield from prehistoric ages lets my expensive receiver handle the output to my very expensive speakers and an AppleTV does not. This would be extremely stupid. Not only for atmos but also for 5.1.

Disappointing that it would not have an A18 chip, but I’ll buy whatever is released. My 4K (1st Gen) is 8 years old and it’s time.

A chip upgrade with faster WiFi connectivity and everything else will remain the same, including the price tag. Not sure whether Apple will then sell the existing model at a lower price.

Just like it was coming last year. And it was coming the year before. And it was coming the year before that. And coming the year before that....
You moan like there hasn’t been a new Apple TV for 5 years. The current model was released in 2022, so rather stupid to suggest anyone was expecting a new model in 2023. Expectations should be a new Apple TV every 2-3 years.

I have the latest one whatever version it is and it still works terrific. Flies through any plex file. Paramoun and Disney streams look spectacular etc

The only thing this thing needs is to support bitstreaming instead of sending everything as PCM. And that's a software thing.

I use plex on my Xbox instead of infuse on the Apple TV just because of this. My movie shows DTS-HD instead of boring old "PCM"

Spec bumps are nice sure. But 120hz is not needed and there's not much else it is used for as a function. It's a stream box.
Agreed I got rid of plex for Jellyfin and infuse when plex started charging for everything and adding commercials to my own movies.

I have eventually decided that an Apple TV might be a good idea for me. But, with an updated model in the offing, I'm not going to buy a current model until I know what the differences are and can make a rational choice. (Or as near rational as I can!)

The sooner it is launched, the better.

How about making it so it works reliably and I don’t have to continually reboot or reinstall apps. My Rokus run rings around this box. When it’s working it is fine but in the main it is the most unreliable and frustrating piece of Apple kit I own.

A regular USB port so you could attach a webcam to it so you don't have to remotely use your phone for Facetime would be fantastic.
Plus you could easily output sound in lossless or hi-res (finally). But Apple doesn't seem to want their stuff to hook up to anything else that isn't Apple. We'll see if their home hub even has a USB port. Imagine that a "hub" without the ability to connect to stuff outside of wifi.

So now it is only "Later this year"? Did Mark ran out of date's? Or does he have dead batteries in his glass bowl?

The A17 Pro was designed for the iPhone 15 Pro models, but Apple still makes it for the iPad mini 7.

The A17 Pro supports Apple Intelligence, plus it can run console-quality games with advanced graphics effects.
Is there any evidence that Apple/TSMC still makes the A17 Pro? I would have thought that the iPad Mini used chips from the leftover pile of A17 Pro chips made for the iPhone 15 Pro (it takes ~6 months for a wafer to get through the foundary, so if TSMC stopped new manufacturing new wafers in September 2024, there still would have been A17Pro chips coming off the line until March 2025).

Also, the A17 Pro was a disaster at playing console-quality games. It was basically a marketing exercise to allow games that were really targeted to M1+ Macs run on iPhones. The reality was the A17 Pro couldn't manage to keep 30 fps with consistent frame time in the majority of AAA games (Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 4 remake, Assassin's Creed Mirage etc), even at 720p/low quality.

Spec bumps are nice sure. But 120hz is not needed and there's not much else it is used for as a function. It's a stream box.
I think 120 Hz is needed. With Apple getting into more sports broadcasting/streaming that market is crying out for 120 Hz content to capture the fast-moving action.

do people actually buy this these days? most TVs now have smart features that include app for AppleTV....

Apple needs to do a lot more. They have milked their customer loyalty for 10+ years and people are getting tired.
Smart TV solutions are garbage a couple of years after they launch. When I got my LG 4K TV in 2020 I thought I wouldn't need my Apple TV as the LG had all the apps I needed, but it was sooooo slow compared to the 2nd gen Apple TV 4K in terms of navigating, loading apps and starting streams. I went back to my TV's apps last week (as BBC iPlayer on Apple TV doesn't support UHD) after a few years of not using them...so frustrating waiting for the apps to catch-up.

Plus LG makes you agree to pretty dodgy T&Cs to use the built-in apps (they can basically spy on the content you are watching so they can sell the data to advertisers)
