do people actually buy this these days? most TVs now have smart features that include app for AppleTV....

Apple needs to do a lot more. They have milked their customer loyalty for 10+ years and people are getting tired.
If you've ever had to endure the teeth-pulling experience of using the native Android interface on any 'smart' TV then you'll know that an Apple TV is practically a neccesity.

I'd call the ATV their best value product. Its relatively cheap, fast, makes no noise, has an interface that knows when to get out of the way and unlike Google isn't trying to constantly sell you something.

I'll glady pass at an AI spyware box in my house. Also "console level games" means at best Playstation 3/Xbox 360. It's like saying my watch has supercomputer capabilities (from 1980).

Also I'd give it about 0% chance it comes with a camera with apple having a perfectly serviceable solution in continuity cam.
I'd rather have a camera from Apple than Google hoovering up all my TV watching data to better profile me for adverts!

A facetime camera or pinch and pull controls in a...Pinch, when you don't want to grab the remote, would be cool
This is actually a good shout. Apple had previously bought PrimeSense, the company they created the original Xbox Kinect to miniaturise it into the FaceID array.

With all the LiDAR tech they have knocking around from the Vision Pro they could easily build a successor that allowed you to use gestures and voice commands to control the TV (the same ones from Vision Pro?) Some may scoff at this but the very same controls were actually well integrated into the Xbox 360. Voice processing happened on-device so if you had to get up to go to the kitchen or bathroom you could just say 'Xbox, Pause' and it would happen instantly.

I’ve never used a TV interface that’s 1/10 as good as our AppleTVs. I have access to more apps, more customization, faster performance, no ads, etc. An Apple TV isn’t required and never was, it’s just way better.

If you use Apple fitness or have multiple TV's in the household and want the same interface that's not full of ad's they do.

I’m not sure I understand the FaceTime camera. I’d assume most Apple TVs are in some sort of a credenza or hidden? Mine is mounted on the wall behind my tv so this would be a worthless feature for me.

I use a piece of brown electrical (PVC) tape. It dims it considerably, but still allows me to see it.
Curious to understand why you used brown electrical tape instead of a matching black electrical tape. They must have been out of black at Lowe’s, Home Depot, Amazon, and basically every retailer on the planet?

The AppleTV is leaps and bounds better experience than any TV or set top box I've tried.

My last year model LG is "ok", and Amazon's Fire line was ok, but these days they're slow and buggy.

I don’t want a smart TV with ads no thank you and a clutter experience. Yuck ! I’ll stick with Apple TV.

If that is a realistic 'prototype' I'll pass and just keep on with the 2 current generation.
I don't WANT a unit that has a camera that requires me to change my tv setup for a feature I will never use, but which Apple will find SOME way to force me to use, cuz spiteful Apple mindset.

I have the latest one whatever version it is and it still works terrific. Flies through any plex file. Paramoun and Disney streams look spectacular etc

The only thing this thing needs is to support bitstreaming instead of sending everything as PCM. And that's a software thing.

I use plex on my Xbox instead of infuse on the Apple TV just because of this. My movie shows DTS-HD instead of boring old "PCM"

Spec bumps are nice sure. But 120hz is not needed and there's not much else it is used for as a function. It's a stream box.
Such a bad take 120hz is needed as you said its a streamer box, and as so GeForce Now, Boosteroid etc need 120hz mode to reduce latency for game streaming.

Just because you don’t game doesn’t mean it’s an irrelevant need.

I'd like a picture-in-picture function which would allow me to watch two separate feeds (i.e. a football game and a YT video) at once - with the ability to switch back-and-forth easily. Half time, commercial breaks, etc. - just pop it into a corner and watch something else, but keep an eye on things just in case.
