Im not really asking if you would, more so why you would? Not like its a new console in limited supply. No real risk of them selling out or not being available.

I understand what an Apple TV is, im pointing out that people arent clamoring and camping out to buy stock on release date.
This is it.

I think at this point they care more about the app/content than the box itself.

Sure you get a few extra perks (iTunes Extras/increased bit rate for ATV Originals) but the majority of people are more than happy to watch on the Fire Sticks of this world and I’m sure Apple are much more happier with that.

Exactly - a Firestick 4K can be had for £50 from Amazon. Even a £99 Apple TV 4K would be double the price. I think the average person just looks to make sure the streaming apps they want are available and then go with the cheapest option: I mean - Netflix is Netflix, right?

The whole "games console" idea is a non-starter - an M4/16GB/256GB option (likely the minimum for modern games) is already available as a Mac Mini which costs £599 - no way a similar spec as an Apple TV will be below £499 (especially as it has to come with a controller). For me, Apple needs to start thinking outside the box to push the Apple TV 4k, but given the low price, do they really want to commit the resources? Some ideas that I've thrown out before
  • Dolby Vision 2 support (should be possible to add this to existing models, but I'm sure Apple would rather you bought a new model)
  • Homekit lighting support to enable Ambilight-like effects from connected HomeKit lights (and perhaps a TV light strip to work with this)
  • A real ML-based upscaling solution, similar to MetalFX, but for video that would allow a 720p stream to look almost as good as a 4k stream and a 480p stream to look HD
  • Apple Intelligence hand-off which allows any Homekit enabled device to benefit from Apple Intelligence - most likely to be useful for HomePods/HomePod Minis, but could it also be useful for things like smart thermostats and the like to let you program them by voice?

Sorry what I meant is the router is in modem mode
to me that implies that your 'modem' is acting as the layer 3 router and gateway, and your ubiquiti is acting as a network bridge.

if this is the case, its almost certainly your modem/gateway in charge of delivery of mdns broadcast packets and the source of your pain.

Well, the October announcements came and went, the Austin Grand Prix came and went and October came and is about to go so… where TF is this thing?
I wonder if the new AirTags and Apple TV 4K are stuck in FCC certification. The rumors/leaks seemed to previously suggest that they would follow soon after the M4 releases this year.

The M4 products were leaked from the FCC just before the government shutdown, and The Verge reported yesterday that new gadgets were being delayed because the FCC has a growing backlog of devices waiting certification during the shutdown.

That is definitely a credible theory.

Out of interest does anyone know if any FCC leak relating to a new HomePod Mini slipped out before the government shutdown or might that be another product that could be added to this still-awaiting-FCC-certification list (if that is indeed the reason why we haven't seen any of these other rumoured products yet)?

I can’t believe any FCC approvals would be outstanding so close to a product release…

Government shutdown started about a month ago though. It would be interesting to know how far in advance of announcement date previous FCC approvals were given.
Some of the more "medical" watchOS features have received their certifications "day of" release and/or in the window between pre-sale and actual delivery. Maybe not the same process, but certainly noteworthy in this context.

There are a few key features that everyone wants to appear on this new device.
Some want physical features like camera or ports, some want software updates some UX/UI most speak of sound and visual features.
I think Apple will largely please users but some will be upset their niche want was not met.
My No1 is form factor I want the HDMI Stick & will be disappointed but not surprised if I don’t get my ask.
I will buy it regardless as it will eclipse anything else in its field for what I want from it & it’s not an outrageous price at its highest. And I think that’s its appeal.
Yes a Roku or Firestick can be had for 30-60 but this will be amazing for at least around 3-5yrs.
The wait will be worth it but I wish it was over.

Come on people, let’s not be reaching here… lol
Yeah. It’s been clear for a while when it comes to AppleTV the focus is mass market vs. videophiles/audiophiles. It’s a great product and it wouldn’t take much to make a product superior to everything else out there, but damn it’s like they walk right up to high end territory and there is some imaginary boundary keeping them from stepping into it. I appreciate them jumping in with both feet on Dolby Vision and HDR10+, but then the audio comes and it’s “meh”. Sure, we have Atmos, but it’s no comparison to BD audio. DTS? What’s that?

IMHO this isn't getting an update until they release the new home hub device, or they run low on a15s.

the current one is more than fine for 95% of users, and its still the best streamer on the market.

We all know that Apple is very forward looking (dropping floppy drives, optical drives, firewire etc) and DTS doesn't look like it will have a presence in streaming media in the near future so it is probably no surprise Apple doesn't officially support it. There is a possibility that Apple could unofficially support DTS (lossy) now the patents have expired in the same way Sonos do, but I can't see Apple putting in the effort and to be honest, locally stored media could probably be decoded to multichannel PCM.

I’m in a hurry to get my first ever Apple TV so I’m hoping it gets released ASAP but another possibility that has been at the back of my mind for quite a few months now is that if ATV’s role is going to expand to also be an option for smart home users to use to run Apple Intelligence locally so that their HomePods can offload processing to an ATV rather than having to go to the cloud then maybe Apple might be timing various product releases so that home hub, new ATV, new HomePod Mini, next generation Siri and maybe even some other hardware all get announced at a single Apple smart home event next year.

If Apple was aiming for such an event then my guess is that new Siri might be the gating factor in terms of timescales & I’d guess that would put the event in late March at the earliest.

Just get the current gen and enjoy the now.

Ridiculously late to the table, but it’s out there now. The catalog would need an audio update. The number of movies that have been done in DTS the last 30 years is in enormous.

Now that the rebranded TV service has been rolled out, I'm thinking/hoping there will be a new name for the box.

Any guesses? I was thinking TVPod might be effective.

Mentioned in a different thread, but the theory that Apple might merge the capabilities of the ATV with one of Apple’s smart home devices makes sense to me unfortunately. Whatever it would be, the price would be higher than the current ATV price, of course. We know Apple likes expensive hardware and the ATV has always been an outlier in that regard. This would explain the recent streaming rebranding.

I hope that’s wrong. Love the ATV, but smart home stuff doesn’t interest me. For a new box name, maybe Apple Stream.

Apple could I suppose try to play both sides of that ATV future by widening the differentiation between the two versions of ATV, or even introducing a third version.

The hardware for a 1Gbps wired network port is dirt cheap now so I think it would be good if Apple stopped making that a differentiator between the two versions of ATV and put a wired option on the cheaper device and then increased the price premium for the more expensive version by quite a lot but in return gave it the extra RAM and processing power needed for it to fulfil its role as the hub for an AI-enabled smart home setup. That way people like you could still buy the cheaper version that isn't trying to be anything other than a media streamer and others (like me) could buy the higher end (Pro? Ultra? Whatever) version to use as the hub for our smart home setup (and stream stuff as well of course).

I mean it would just be great if they just released a model in general at this point let’s be honest. lol
I know right? Ahah
I have been waiting since October 2024. Waited for march, nothing. October this year, nothing.

In all honesty, I think this whole 11-12 restock thing, is purely that. A restock and rearrange of the stores for the holidays. Which is sad for me

It's been so long now, I've give up wanting a new model and gone elsewhere for now. Maybe a new model will be released next year when the updated Siri arrives. like many home theatre enthusiasts they we just want an ATV that allows passthrough of True HD, DTS, Dolby Digital Plus etc.

I looked at competitors and nothing would really satisfy me. The Nvidia box looks nice but it’s a super outdated piece , and overpriced hardware. It does a lot, but it’s very old already.

And I need something for my media centre , yeah. That can handle both DV and HDR10+, and true hd, DTS.. which I’m sure a new apple tv would be able to.

It’s just it has been so long , that I just lost hope. This whole hype about stores refreshing etc, I truly believe it’s purely for the holidays.
