I’m hoping that the next Apple TV has a fan, or at least does a better job at managing the heat compared to the ATV4K3.

I would also like to see a new remote design. Wow I was never a fan of the original Siri Remote on the ATV4, that design is better than the current design in my opinion.

Never noticed the ATV4K3 heat issues. I've got a couple and neither get more that "warm". And the current Siri Remote is my favorite. Hated the glassy scroll pad version, personally.

YMMV

I seem to have been waiting forever to update my Apple TV from the one I have, which is the 4K 1st Gen from 2017. Hopefully not too much longer!
Just get the current model my man-Apple have proven that this is clearly the least important aspect of their portfolio so just get the 3rd gen and move on with your life. Lol

or not!

There aint much the current gen 4K has that the 1st gen 4K doesnt (if anything). I know because I have both.

Hell even the ATV HD still works just fine on an older 1080p TV i use.

Just an FYI/extra perspective here...

The first gen apple tv 4k was released 8 years ago (2017), and is still fully supported and works just fine.
That’s my problem. In 2017 it doesn’t work just fine. It’s my hub for HomeKit as often not responding

Problem you have is TV isn’t moving on. 8k is highly unlikely imo to ever be a thing and companies that make TVs build Apple in. The demand for the kit is getting less.

Ideally the ATV is wired, and even if it is and you are still having issues, your clients are likely wireless.

I’d wager it has more to do with your router and network than it has to do with your HomeKit hub. Not all home gateways and configuration options/capabilities are equal.

Check into mDNS/zeroxonf settings.

I mean if you’re not in desperate need to get one then yes, the first gen 4K will still serve someone very well.

But if you are in the market for one there is literally no reason at this point to wait on a next gen model that is still at this moment in time a rumour and nothing more.

And yet people are turning up to comment on something nobody wants or needs.

People don’t connect PlayStation or Xbox controllers??? They aren’t gamers.

People don’t want their streaming device to do more than the alternative and stay stuck on play Disney+ or Netflix???

If nobody needs or wants this and iOS 26 features and enhancements are of no value why then interest?

My concern about delays is that it launches with out of date hardware. An A17Pro Apple TV 4k would seem like a bit of a slap in the face if it launched in 2026. I would hope for an A18 minimum (or a binned A19 Pro given the iPhone Air flopping ;)).

Depends on what the scope of the product is.

If they wish to try to make a sort of gaming machine out of the ATV, then the latest and greatest would of course be preferable.

And while Apple undoubtedly enjoys economies of scale with its silicon, the ATV is still a relatively inexpensive product, competing against even cheaper products.

If it carries on simply as a media player, provided that whatever chip they choose can handle the modern codecs, it should be fine.

My Apple TV4/HD, with its A8, still functions fine for steaming and VLC playback with local files encoded with x.265.

That has made it easier to sit and wait for…something.

My overall hope is that Apple stops treating it, and the home, as a "hobby."

The existing models do everything youre talking about. Not sure what you’re on about exactly.

People obviously want the device to be updated.

But it pretty much fact that the 2022 model is/was already OP for what it actually needs to do which if we are being honest, is to merely stream content from the Netflix and Disney+’s of this world.

So in that sense if people want to buy an Apple TV today, then they should go and buy the current version instead of waiting on what might be.

Thermal throttling on the ATV4K3 is common with games and some streaming apps such as Plex. There are some threads on this issue.

The earlier ATV4Ks have active cooling, and the ATV4K2 with the older A12 can actually outperform the current model’s A15 on a lot if games.

The first gen 4K doesn't support 4K and 4k HDR on Youtube and Youtube TV.

It’s wired, and I have a mixture of wired wireless clients. Don’t have a router. Network is all unifi devices

The next version will likely have AV1 codec support and support Apple Intelligence. I have yet to see a compelling reason for Apple Intelligence on the Apple TV though.

I suspect Apple Intelligence on Apple TV is more about getting it on the HomePod. I think the next HomePod will have some way to interface with the Apple TV to utilize its chip and RAM since the S series chips aren't powerful enough for standalone Apple Intelligence.

Managed to snag a cheap 3rd gen ATV 4K so that will arrive at some point next week.

That will tide us over now and if this mysterious next gen ATV ever sees the light of day we’ll take a look at it then.

Thanks! That means Apple will release the new version on Monday. Appreciate the hand. :D :D :D

Some fantasy additions/changes
  • An Improved Backlit remote
  • Ability to sideload app from android

  • FaceTime Camera on device or separate with sub 5W USB power

A release date in the next few days.

Feel like an idiot for waiting as long as I have for this.
I don't think you should, MacRumors usually gives a more accurate idea of a release than they have with this Apple TV. It's pretty impressive at this point how far off they've been over the past couple years (or longer).

To the folks saying the OG 4K 2017 model is sufficient: No.

Well, sort of. If tvOS and certain 3rd-party apps were more efficiently-written, then sure. I have a couple 4K 2017 models, a 4K 2021 model, and a 4K 2022 model, all with wired gigabit Ethernet. The 2017 models all stutter doing simple things, like animating menus / lobby carousels / etc. Video playback itself is ok, although occasionally it, too, will stutter. The 2021 and 2022 models do not have this problem.

As an aside, the Amazon Prime Video app is a pig, written by programmers at gunpoint from product managers who are clearly incentivized to hate the Apple ecosystem. On the 2017 4K AppleTVs it seems like more than a second in response time for certain Prime Video actions.

I'm still using a 1st Gen 4k AppleTV with 26.01 and it is still working fine for me.

Apps used on the unit include Prime, Netflix, Disney+, PeacockTV, HBOMax, Paramount, ITVx, Channel 4, Channel 5, BBC iPlayer, Tube, Shudder, Hoopla, Kanopy, Fawsome, Movies Anywhere, Fandango-at-Home, Mhz, and TVNZ+.

Does it not do everything want it to already? I feel like most people just have must-upgrade-itis over this Apple Tv. I'm glad my 1st Gen 4k's haven't needed to be upgraded for any appreciable reason!
I hate the glass touchpad on the remote. And it’s not as responsive as it was. I don’t NEED a new model, but I’m ready to upgrade. If you like the original 4k one I have so much, I can sell it to you!
