I hate the glass touchpad on the remote. And it’s not as responsive as it was. I don’t NEED a new model, but I’m ready to upgrade. If you like the original 4k one I have so much, I can sell it to you!

I have 6 different model ATVs in play with spares. I’m good thanks :)

+1 on the remote. Has to be the worst remote ever made.

Same remote as my ATV HD, and what made it beautiful made it hard to use.

Guys you do know that there are options right? All supported ATVs can use the newer Siri Remote, Universal IR remote (like Harmony), or the phone app for control. If you really don’t like the black remote, you can use any one of these options. IR remote for me!

Yes. I have a couple of Harmony remotes til they stop working, the trackpad Siri Remotes and several of the aluminum models and even a couple of the white plastic OG remotes.

But I still hate the glass trackpad remotes. I have 2 of them that are deep in the junk drawer where they belong.

Sell them on eBay? I imagine some people have a different opinion or preference than you do.

TBH I never fully understood, what is wrong with the trackpad remote?
I also think that its trackpad is made of plastic, not glass.

I'm still using a 1st Gen 4k AppleTV with 26.01 and it is still working fine for me.

Apps used on the unit include Prime, Netflix, Disney+, PeacockTV, HBOMax, Paramount, ITVx, Channel 4, Channel 5, BBC iPlayer, Tube, Shudder, Hoopla, Kanopy, Fawsome, Movies Anywhere, Fandango-at-Home, Mhz, and TVNZ+.

Interesting, thank you for the reply. Are you using it with HDR? >60Hz? Frame-rate/depth matching? I've been wondering if any of those is the problem.

I mean, for me, the Prime app obviously struggles on both my 2017s... so if it's a me problem, why only the 2017s?

Yeah, what @erihp said. I have a trackpad remote around here somewhere with the typical glass-fracture-lines pattern on it, radiating from the corner where it hit a hard tile floor after being dropped less than 3ft/1m (i.e., off the couch).

That having been said, personally, I liked the trackpad remote. My wife hated it.

I have mine set to 4k SDR with match range and match frame rate enabled.

I'm feeding the 2017 via HDMI to an Anthem processor.

I suspect Apple Intelligence on Apple TV is more about getting it on the HomePod. I think the next HomePod will have some way to interface with the Apple TV to utilize its chip and RAM since the S series chips aren't powerful enough for standalone Apple Intelligence.
I agree. There's a huge difference in processing power between say an S10/S11 and an A17 Pro.

Apple does seem to be about to take the smart home market more seriously and having the option for a client-server architecture within the home with a really quite powerful A17 Pro chip (or better) in the server has the potential to make Apple quite unique in that market. It would allow an Apple setup to do quite sophisticated stuff like video analysis locally (like Frigate on Home Assistant) and also to handle a wider range of HomePod requests locally without having to bump up the price of the HomePod hardware by putting too much processing power into every client (HomePod) device.

I don't think that such a client-server smart home concept would mean that people would have to have an ATV as their server. The Apple Watch has already proved that simple stuff like setting timers can be executed locally on an S-Series chip so also presumably basic device control as well, it's just that for more complex stuff a HomePod could offload the processing for a request to an ATV if there is one on the network and if not then go out to the Apple servers to get the more complex tasks handled.

Ultimately even with an ATV on the network I suspect there would still be some tasks that needed to go to the Apple servers but minimising that last-resort processing and keeping as much processing as possible local would improve response times, maximise privacy, and reduce Apple's costs by reducing the load on its servers. It really could be a win-win for both Apple and its customers.

Agreed that I think the Apple TV will do the bulk of processing for Apple Intelligence queries on the new HomePods. We've already seen Apple do this with the Fitness Buddy on the Watch where it needs phone in proximity to do this.

I can also see the N1 chip being key as it's Apple built and they'll be able to optimise it for scenarios such as this.

Well, the October announcements came and went, the Austin Grand Prix came and went and October came and is about to go so… where TF is this thing?

I'd assume they'd announce it before the earnings call this week so they'd have pre-order sales to report on.

The Apple TV 4k is not even a blip on the radar in terms of revenue for Apple. It is doubtful the earnings call has any effect on the release date.

I would, I'm wanting to upgrade one of mine, but am waiting for the new one. Apple TV is an app. Apple TV 4K is the streaming box.
Im not really asking if you would, more so why you would? Not like its a new console in limited supply. No real risk of them selling out or not being available.

I understand what an Apple TV is, im pointing out that people arent clamoring and camping out to buy stock on release date.

I believe an Ad-free service on a Premium device that competes on Price with the other streaming boxes and sticks is a big deal and although were insular in our views compared to the 'average' person when they see an apple device with less than a 3-digit price point it moves the needle an forces the rest of them to do more.

Yes, Roku do a price point at 30- 60 likewise with amazon and google but Apple wins all the head to heads 99% of the time in any consumer category, but PRICE.

I truly believe sub 100 is a game changer both on the pocket and psychologically.
