As I’ve said a million times if it’s not about cost then it should be a free add on while ordering any Apple device. You want a phone charger free you want a cable free. That solves the problem. It’s not about cost right?!

How will producing something reduce waste? At some point in time it will need to be recycled or thrown away.

It does charge with a USB-C though.

Q: Do you have a USB-C cable at all?
Nope, none, have nothing that uses it currently. There's still a decent legacy ecosystem using Micro-USB and USB-A still, I guess it depends on how often you update devices or buy new tech. Even if I did have a cable, it's possible that I'd have it permanently attached to a device, so therefore would want a separate cable for charging devices.

Yes, a Macbook can charge with USB-C, but that is not its primary charging method, nor is a cable provided to do so.

It would be interesting to find out what a typical Apple user has for cables (outside of lightning), I don't think MacRumors users count as typical users though!

EDIT: I agree that not including cables should be the norm, I'm just not sure that Apple should be removing them during a company-wide transition to a new connector.

What if Apple simply included the cable along with the price cut?
It’s the inclusion of the cable that is the problem they’re trying to solve - not Apple exclusively mind you. That’s why governments are ruling for a standardised charging port.

Okay, so now that your petty environmental arguments have fallen through, let’s debunk the even more putrid economic ones. $10 is but a drop in the bucket for me or your average everyday working-class American but the wholesale prices paid by Apple to manufacture/acquire their proprietary, previously-bundled cables is not even an atom.
Petty Environmental argument? Less cables = less waste. Done. I don’t need or want a useless cable, even though I want to get a new aTV to get the new remote, as my current one sucks. I also don’t need the tv, so I’ll check and might buy the remote in its own. Gee I hope it comes with a charging cable…. 😂

So the alternate reality I pose is: What if Apple simply included the cable along with the price cut? Some backlash would’ve been avoided; it’s in fact likely that largely positive media and customer press would have come their way. But I guess pinching those additional pennies is worth the sour taste these kinds of moves leave in much of the public’s mouth.
Backlash would still be here, because plenty of other threads say that if they were serious on reducing waste (saying it’s an economic decision), they would get rid of the cable and not just the power brick. Done

A: None of your business.
= Yes, but I appreciate that you don't want to destroy your baseless argument in 1 word.

They may cost them $1, but they charge us $20 for them. And now people who need one have to buy one and most people probably will buy it from Apple along with the product rather than buying it elsewhere.

So thats a nice fat profit for Apple proving it has NOTHING to do with e-waste or the environment.
If people use the one they already have, which is the entire thrust of Apple’s argument, then how do they make that extra $20? Also, other companies sell them for less, or they sell higher quality ones that will last longer. You also obviously think consumers are lazy and/or stupid because you assume they’ll buy it from Apple. They might, they might not.

I think it’s annoying to not include a cable, but it’s not a moral crisis. And I do believe Apple may be genuine with the environmental case. I think it would be clearer if iPhone had already been transitioned to USB-C, but it hasn’t. You seem to refuse to believe anything is possible other than that they’re just petty and greedy. I think that’s cynical, combative, and unreasonable. But I appreciate you sharing your perspective.

Same. If I got a USB-C cable, then I’d have to get a USB-C charging brick because I have nothing to plug it in to. Remember, Apple stopped shipping the charging bricks when they switched to a lightning-to-USB-C cable, forcing everyone to go out and buy charging bricks that accept the updated cable.

That was “environmentally friendly“ too, right? Forcing millions to go buy GaN chargers?

I’ve been accused of being an Apple fanboy for over a decade. But today might be the first time Apple has made me very disappointed. Switch iPad to USB-C but force anyone with an Apple Pencil to use an adapter to charge? Why not make a USB-C first gen Apple Pencil? Logitech did that. No charging cable for the ATV remote? Pulling Ethernet from the ATV? Heck, why are there two ATV SKUs? Who is the iPad Air for?

Many monitors and printers and printers have come without cables for decades. Not all, but a lot.

I think people like to feel like they get something for nothing, even though they know they actually pay for it. I believe that’s why people like the 'unboxing' experience and why YouTube channels such as Unbox therapy is so big, like opening a present.

Thats why the hate is fake in my opinion. The people fighting against this could just as easily choose to provide an alternative argument. "Use your voice for good people…"

I still have my Apple USB-C brick but I’d rather the GaN charger I recently purchased. It’s all I’m taking with me overseas.

Apple got a lot of hate for getting rid of the headphone jack. And they provided a dongle for it, which you now have to buy separately. People move on. If I had a new dongle with every iPhone upgrade, it’d be annoying and so wasteful. I’d rather pay a once of fee for a cable than keep getting something i don’t want or need. Regardless of the $’s Apple might save or not save.

Pulling Ethernet is not a deal breaker for me because I no longer use it for my aTV. Heck these days how many people even plug their laptop into Ethernet? Not many I would guess.

I don't think removing ethernet for the base model is that big of a deal, but using a laptop as an example is a not a good comparison. The ATV isn't mobile.

My Laptop generally stays where it is too. But occasionally I take it with me. But even PC's. Many wouldn’t connect it to Ethernet either, I am sure.

The issue I have with the aTV base model is that it isn’t thread enabled, so I can’t use it as my home hub. That makes no sense to me. My base model 4K aTV isn't connect to ethernet, but it runs my Home Hub.

It should have been included. But Apple is doing it for the enviorment. Brazil or France is not going to be happy about this one.

I'll side with the folks who say it should have been included (regardless of whatever reason like Environment).

Let me put it this way... IF the remote could install batteries (AA or rechargable) or IF the remote could be charged via magnetic touch charger (like the Apple Watches), then Apple can easily say that they did not need to include the cables.

But because the remote can only be charged using a (USB-C) cable, then Apple really should have included it.

Imagine buying a $1000+ iPad and not getting a cable in the box. Cause that's probably next for them and the "environment" lie.

You think people complaining about the lack of cable are weird. I think defending Apple padding their profit margins a bit more is weird.

I do think people like you are emotional and weird.

You should instead calculate the cost of the cable into the total price of a device and then decide if it provides enough value.

Agreed. I use ethernet myself, but I am purchased the 128GB version anyways, so I am totally covered.

$20 for an extra 64GB of storage alone is a good deal by Apple storage standards.
Agreed. I’d even opt for a new Apple TV, but then I’d have to get rid of an older one. Maybe I should just chuck it, or put it on a drawer…

Anyway. Had plenty to say, and said it. I’m over this argument. Too much to do in the real world now 😃

Enjoy.

Oh, I found a lot of things to be bizarre in today’s announcements. I think the iPad Air should just be eliminated, frankly. It feels redundant. The new iPad being the only one to have a proper FaceTime camera orientation. Then again, maybe thats why it cant support the Apple Pencil 2nd gen..maybe the components can’t fit together. I dunno..many strange quirks in today’s announcements for sure.
