Help me out here. Does your cable work on any of these devices?

So, to "save the environment", I'd need to do the following:

Buy a Mac/PC with USB-C
Wait for Airpods Pro to have a USB-C adapter
Buy a new Apple TV 4K
Wait for iPhone to have a USB-C port
Buy a new iPad

Great, thanks for clearing that up.

I’m all lightning and you’re telling me to switch to USB-C because some bureaucrats in Europe are forcing Apple’s hand, and I should just grin and bear it.

So I’ll need to get multiple USB-C GaN chargers, USB-C to lightning cables for my iPhones because Apple hasn’t made the switch yet, USB-C cables for items I purchase from Apple in the future, and if I get the new iPad I’ll need to get an adapter for their genius idea of making the iPad USB-C but the accessories lightning.

And this is courage? It’s insanity.

So did you not do this when switching from 30-pin to lightning?

Guess what? You don’t ever have to do it again because your cables will work on all future technology instead of just Apple devices.

I swear some Apple fans are obsessed with being proprietary.

Also no you can get A to C cables and keep using the bricks you have. Lightning will be a thing of the past in a year or two.

You have to get GaN? You sound like someone who would spend 50 bucks on a Monster HDMI cable because Apple didn’t provide a cable. You have Black Friday around the corner go ham on the inevitable Anker sale.

Or maybe just stay mad keep using your FireWire hard drives and Zip disks.

Edit: Also thanks for the all the photos proving why moving to a standard is a good idea. Do you not understand it will never get better unless everyone uses the same port? Yes it will take time to replace your devices but guess what everything is going to the same plug Apple or not! Doesn’t that sound the least bit good to you?

There were technical benefits switching to lightning, plus the EU wasn't shoving a standard down Apple's throat. Apple decided at their own pace when to make changes.

Heck, I remember Android phones going from Mini-USB to Micro-USB to USB-C. Did the EU force them to change? No. They made their own decision, likely because Android is a copycat paradise.

My problem is Apple was going to go portless anyway, and a government (EU) forced Apple to change to "reduce waste". Ironically, another government (Brazil) is fining them for doing just that by saying more stuff should be in the box.

So, we're literally looking at maybe 2 years of a USB-C iPhone before they go portless. It amazes me how many simps are on here, blaming those of us who hold on to our devices for more than a year.

I'm not getting rid of my perfectly functional and still officially supported Apple TV 4K boxes. So I'll need a Lightning cable for the remote. If a buy a new Apple product, I'll need a USB-C for that. If I take my iPhone and iPad with me, guess what, I'll need two cables. And people defend this nonsense.

Guess what Apple was first on the Type-C bandwagon. They did lightning because they adopted C too early and it was also a cash grab for making everyone pay for cables.

I’ll say it again Type-C is a standard. The cable you buy will work on all your Apple stuff but also everything else.

Also lightning being a benefit when iPhones are still USB 2.0 is funny. The rest of the world is USB 3.0+

All proprietary technology dies. Laserdisc, Minidisc, HD-DVD, Vita memory sticks. Things standardize. BluRay, MicroSD, Type-C, etc.

While I sympathize with the many exuberant responses on both sides of the “they should / shouldn’t include cords” debate, personally it makes the most sense to simply provide the option to get one free or not. At very least do that for $1000 devices like iPhones, if not also the TV and ”smaller” or less expensive devices.

Wait so what happens when the phone goes portless?

You didn’t think this through did you? Guess what a portless iPhone will use?? MagSafe! What’s on the end of a MagSafe cable??? Ding Ding!

Sounds like you should futureproof yourself and just buy a bunch of Type-C MagSafe chargers and induction pads.

You should get some GaN bricks for those MagSafe chargers too!

That would absolutely satisfy me. That's a good compromise. It'll never happen, though. At this rate, it would not shock me at all to see a Mac Mini ship without a power cable. Heck, we have a monitor without a stand.

MagSafe is proprietary, like Lightning. It's not a "standard". I would not be surprised at all if the EU comes and whines about MagSafe not being "an open standard" and they'll want rubes who have Samsung phones to be able to use MagSafe.

Nope it’s just induction with a magnet.
You're gonna tell me "MagSafe" will work on a Samsung? And charge at the same rate as it would on an iPhone 14 Pro?

MagSafe has fallback Qi charging. Oh, by the way, did the EU force Apple to include Qi wireless charging? Apple did it based upon the market. My problem among many with this is the government telling Apple what to do with cables under the guise of "helping the environment' and "creating a standard". So, by that logic. Why doesn't the EU mandate petroleum-based vehicles and ban diesel engines? Gasoline and diesel are two competing fuels. Diesel is worse for the environment based upon the CO2 release. Will they do that? Of course not. That's ridiculous. Just about as much as mandating USB-C. Let the market handle itself.

next iphone "box only, no phone, it's for the environment. we'll just rollover your money for the next iphone." 😂

You’re literally supporting being locked to Apple and being committed to having special chargers for Apple stuff forever… ok.

Apple loves you.

Also you can have MagSafe on laptops and phones the law doesn’t prevent it as long as it has Type-C too.

You're telling me Apple has open-sourced MagSafe technology? Do you have a link to that? That would be major news.

I think you're misrepresenting my view. I have a problem with the government mandating a standard. Apple decided to put USB-C on the iPad Pro years ago. That's fine. However, Apple is rushing to switch it's products over to beat the EU law, when really it has no purpose other than to penalize Apple. And Apple being run by Tim Cook, would rather remove the cable altogether and charge the same price than give everyone a USB-C cable. And people's excuses on here is "well everyone already has USB-C." Except not everyone has USB-C.

Anyway, I'm done with this. Have a great evening.

Qi charging is not proprietary. USB-C is not proprietary.

Why is this even an issue? Everyone here has too many lightning cables. And other people want more cables in every box for a new product that uses the same cable as something else…

it’s lazy, it’s cheap, it’s bad for the environment. It’s bad for your pocket because you’ll pay for it anyway.

They get rid of the charger and people say 'if they were serious they’d get rid of the cable'. They get rid of the cable and people say, 'the world needs millions more cables because everything should be free'. Pathetic.

It should have been included. But Apple is doing it for the enviorment. Brazil or France is not going to be happy about this one.
Unless Apple provides cables in Brazil, France and any other country that puts enough pressure on them. I understand the environment angle, but while some people might have the appropriate cables all over the place, that’s not the case for everyone.

Apple has chosen to stick with lightning and USB 2.0 they had years to go USB 3.0. I have zero sympathy of them having to move to a standard.

What monitor comes without a stand?

If you’re talking about the Studio Display, you choose what you want at checkout. Either a VESA mount, or a tilt stand. And then they offer a different style of stand (tilt, height adjustable) as another choice. Price is stupid, but that’s not the point. They don’t charge extra for the normal stand, or vesa.

Some of the Anti-Apple Alliance on here say there should be a choice about what you want. They give the choice and the same people say it’s not what they want. If people here are going to argue a point, please be consistent, because your underwear is showing and it’s a pretty horrible sight.

There is nothing wrong this model. It’s been that way with cars, like forever. Choose the colour. Oh you want not-white? Oh, that’s extra. Oh you want metallic? Oh, that’s extra. Oh you want to use your heated seats? That’ll be a monthly subscription thank you.

I'm just amazed people here can put their shoes on the morning without a shoe horn. I mean really, don't all shoes come with shoehorns… and socks of course. Actually I don’t know that they can; it’s just an assumption.

So now we know how the USB-C iPhone (if they don’t have the courage to go entirely portless) will ship.

In the box: iPhone. That is all.

No manuals, no stickers, no cables, no nothing.

Stickers? Noooooo. I mean, if you want get rid of waste, there’s a spot right there. Although I think they’ve stopped now haven’t they? Please say they have….
