I’d be happy if they software unlocked the hdmi port.

<no need for new hardware>

I’d like 24/96 & 120 hz pass thru to my 120 native TV, and hi-res to my AVR.

Matter/Thread support is coming in 16.1

BT5.2 LC3 would be nice, but that would require new hardware, and regular people are not going to upgrade for this feature alone.

My collection:
Atv2
Atv1080p
Atv 4k gen1
AtV 4k gen2

Yes they need a stick-like version or something simple for people who don't want to use it for games, just streaming and perhaps something a little more portable for people who travel. I used to use the Roku stick and it was awesome when I was in different hotels all the time.
When I travel I bring my Roku Premiere 4k because it deals with hotel Wi-Fi boarding processes much easier.

I wanted find my remote this gen, bought it anyway and now they are going to sell me yet another new remote. Come on Apple, doesn't take a genius to implement this! I'm loosing interest in these public 'beta' hardware releases. Oh and thanks for iOS 16, been a flashback to years ago when nothing was stable.

they need to add all the codecs so we don't have to move to nvidia or infuse when using plex. there's no reason this isn't the player of all players at this cost and processing power.
Then we wouldn’t buy/rent stuff from iTunes!!!

They’ll never support iso and other “pirate” formats!

Infuse Pro is the best thing that ever happened to tv 🥳

Why?
I find the price to be inconsequential.
Apple TV box is $180 while we spend $1600+ per year on streaming services.
Most people aren't spending $130/month on streaming. In addition, the majority of tvs come with all the same streaming services built-in, and AirPlay, so there is little to no motivation to buy anything.

I don't know what world you're living in.

Edit: Looks like the average is $47 per household, or $564/year.

They desperately need a cheaper Apple TV. Just for Apple TV+ and basic Airplay features. Even the current HD version is way too expensive.
Last month, when I got the 4K/32 Apple TV set top box at Costco for only $119.99 I was sure that an upgrade (cheaper, faster, better in every way) was on the way. Now I am no longer sure, as the price there has gone back up to $169.99.

Do retailers conduct random marketing experiments to see if we are paying attention and to gauge demand? Was this instead simply a case of good shopping karma/dumb luck?

A faster chip for what?

What they need to do is fix the current model from last year. Every time I fast forward or rewind in a programme or film in Disney Plus or even Apples own films, then I play again the sound goes. It also these days goes in only part of the menu too and I have to reboot to get it back. It's really poor, really poor for a streaming box as expensive as it is. All I have is the box plugged directly into my Sony OLED.

It's literally the only issue I have with it.

Using 2015 Apple TV (4th generation). Works well for my 1080p TV. Remote has died but works with the iPhone as makeshift remote. Would like to see HomePod and Apple TV combo as one device because my 2018 HomePod is a glorious speaker for my TV anyway.

The best 2 things about this upgrade:

1. The new remote is great, and adding U1 Find My support will be excellent.

2. The A10X and A12 were very close to each other performance wise. The A14 will be a noticeable improvement over both.

I have used the A10X on wired Ethernet (it had a 100mbps limit in its port), from launch day of that model in 2017 until launch day of new model. Been using new model wired since then (it can handle 1gbps). They both can lag at times, not internet related. The A14 will be a very welcome upgrade to snappiness and quick launching.

HDMI 2.1 adaptive sync - PLEASE!

HDMI adaptive sync should eliminate the switching time when changing frame rates if the TV supports it. That would be a clear improvement.
The refresh has become really annoying. Had to turn it off because YouTube was going crazy between ads and content.

For me personally, everything I want is software based.

Bitstream audio. Proper user profiles. Better DV profiles. An OS Apple gives a poop about.

If I had to have new hardware, I’d only ask for a 10Gb Ethernet and HDMI 2.1 ports. 4K performance is great as is. 8K is way off in the distance.

Someone else said it better than I. Apple needs a vision and direction for ATV. A barebones “AIR” version and a souped up “Pro” version. Done.

Only 1 out of 4 “features” mentioned is a feature.
This author seems to favor Buzzfeed style click bait titles. Would feel less click baity if it was simply "New Apple TV Rumored to Launch in 2022" and maybe add "at Lower Price Points." Just personal preference. When there is a number, it feels gimmicky.

It feels like Apple has lost its original vision/purpose for the Apple TV (remaking the remote dozen of times does not mean you know what you're doing). I mean what does Apple want? More people subscribing to AppleTV+? Yet they don't even want to sell a basic AppleTV for $99 (or even $49), making it like they want good margins on the hardware. But ironically they are putting Apple TV app on other platforms like Android TV devices.

Apple started Apple Arcade, making it seems like they want to go into gaming console route. But then it seems like it's not going anywhere, with developers starting to get disinterested. How about a smart home hub? They are not even integrating the homepod well, and they discontinued their router lineup, which is the heart of any home networking.

What does Apple really want? As a consumer, I'm totally confused.

I guess we will never see what Jobs' had said in one of the interviews that he "cracked it." Seems like whatever Jobs was thinking, it got lost in translation somewhere.
I couldn’t agree more with this comment.

What is an  Tv other than expensive streaming box? The software is still slow and buggy all these years later and honestly I can’t pick anything that makes it better than my $40 chromecast 4k. Maybe SharePlay but that’s really all that comes to mind.

Another commenter suggested integrating HomePod. I think that could be interesting. Roku does it. They need to make Siri a more unified experience. As a user it’s frustrating that depending on which Siri device I query, I get different results. And no matter how hard I try HomeKit is still junk and only intermittently works with my lights.

I think  should work on making a gaming console. Integrate the HomePod. Make  arcade worth subscribing to.

Or, another idea. Work with all the cable companies and make the  Tv a cable box in addition to the above. Like a TiVo, but better.

Coming from LG magic remote, ATV4k's Siri Remote is major step backward. Inability to click anywhere one the screen simply by pointing is so frustrating.

I double agree… just what does the Apple TV do? Seriously… there is the Apple TV app, and it takes you to Apple TV programming and offerings… is the Apple TV (hardware) just a bookmark/pointer device sending you to the apps?

How many of you remember the “Front Row” software and remote they used to send out with the iMac and Mac Mini? And its (incomplete IMHO) integration with the then iTunes, iPhoto, iDVD, Podcasts, etc…? It was the beginning of Apple designing a home entertainment controller and manager of all software that had entertainment at its root purpose/design… - that is what Apple TV should have turned into, a home theater/entertainment console device that integrated with the whole home sound system, and display devices such as the TV, etc… and yes, could even integrate with the gaming consoles that are out there… i.e. Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, etc… and of course it should point to Apple TV and Apple Music… (but bring back iTunes for managing the personally owned music, video, and podcast libraries)… that would revitalize the Apple TV if they did something like that with it… otherwise it really is not serving the purpose of anything but a hard wired bookmark/pointer device to apps that are installed on the other Apple hardware.

Apple - give us back our iTunes, please! (And as bonus, revitalize Front Row so we can at least make out own home entertainment media servers… kinda like a Plex server does, but much more elegant, like “Front Row” was, with its magic remote.

Who’s with me??

I used to but stopped using Roku a long time ago to keep all my viewing in sync on ATV/iOS devices. I take my iPad and try to cast to the hotel TV but it's hit & miss.

2022 and AppleTV devices can’t support Hires audio from AppleMusic. Seriously even cheap BD players can playback audio up to 24bit192kHz. It’s ridiculous all the kludgy stuff Apple makes a consumer do to enjoy Hires lossless audio.

4K @ 120Hz would be a godsend. This refresh is perfect because you can play 24, 30, and 60 fps content without any frame judder. No more having to switch video modes when playing content to avoid judder.

Not only that, but displays have lower latency at higher refresh rates. Running at 120Hz would mean near zero latency on my LG TV.

What’s it need 120 for? no movies are in 120. Maybe for games but thats about it and rare few games.
youd also need a 120hz tv. It’s rather pointless it a set top box. Not a gaming console.
Crazy spec’s matter because every person buying an appletv is an audio/videophile.
I was one of those then discovered simply watching a movie was an incredible experience.
