Just allow audio pass thru already
I really miss the audio output ports on the older AppleTV. I went thru quite a few HDMI splitters to find one to replace that feature. Many gave my DAC fits. I did finally find one though. I use the TOSLINK.

U9 ViewHD Newest Ultra HD 4K HDMI Audio Extractor 4K@60Hz, HDR, Dolby Vision | 3.5mm Headphone Stereo Output | Toslink Optical Audio DD+ Output | HDCP 2.2 | HDMI 2.0 | 18Gpbs | | Model: VHD-UHAE

I have 2 TV’s in the house, both OLED, both with the lates Apple TV 4K. Both refurbished from Apple. I love both of them but the price points are too high. I’d like to see an Apple TV Stick or something similar to make it easy to hide the device. The current remote is great.
I would like something that could travel well. I don't want to carry an AppleTV in my suitcase. When I get to the hotel there's no way to get it onto the hotel wifi without jumping through serious hoops. So smaller and easier to get on wifi is my wish list.

Spec bumps are cute, but what’s different?
What can the new faster tv do that the old one can’t? What can the Siri Remote do that the old one can’t. The TVOS also is looking a bit dated. The icons are too big and far apart, so much scrolling. Replicate the TV Home Screen(s) on the remote app on the phone and make that the remote. Smart TVs now have all the apps built in, I’m wondering why should I continue to use an Apple TV vs the TVs built in apps? I free an outlet, HDMI port, and remote.

Apple needs some sort of big breakthrough with the next version! Otherwise my current Apple TV will probably be my last.

I had high hopes for the Apple TV4 when it was released 7 years ago (Apple still sells it at the same price) that I even pre-ordered it. I even bought the Steele Series controller. It started off basic, they stayed that way, for 7 years. Apple had some bits to it like TV app, audio, big deal. Its virtually unchanged for 7 years. The comments above has mentioned many features that the AppleTV should have, but Tim Cook has done nothing. I given up on it, and don't use it anymore, even though its plugged in.

My TV box for the last 2 years is now an Intel NUC running Ubuntu and a Logitech keyboard with built-in trackpad, and through the browser I can watch anything I want. I can download stuff. Surf the net, play games through an emulator, send messages apps, etc etc. Its quiet, no mess no fuss. Its 100 times better than the frustrating useless Apple TV.

Thanks for sharing. I arrived at the exact same solution too, after several tries of other boxes that didn't work well.

And I too wish Apple would put AUX audio out BACK into an AppleTV instead of pressing those of us who want it to need this type of dongle. AppleTV is more than a video playback device. It can double as a Music jukebox with TV off. Most modern receivers have "Zone 2" and zone 2 typically needs Analog audio in to work. So to use an AppleTV as an "iPod" hooked to the best speakers in the house or the secondary speakers hooked to zone 2 begs for an AUX analog out jack like the original AppleTV.

If not AUX audio out, how about ONE "normal" USB jack that could basically cover this same base? And if so, resurrect the ability to sync to a hard drive(s) we could optionally attach to that same jack... also like the original AppleTV. Those who desire sync (resurrection) could get what we want. Those happy with pure streaming would not have to pay for a feature (on board storage) they don't want.

And I'd be for resurrecting Front Row (Two) to basically make any Mac an AppleTV "Pro." That could bring local storage, AUX out and a variety of other desired features and resurrections to those willing to spend that much on a "pro" AppleTV device. AppleTV UI is basically just an app running on weaker Mac-like hardware. A Front Row 2 running on ANY Mac hardware would be quite welcome for those wanting a "pro."

The extra specs are nice, but not compelling enough to make me dump my year-old ATV. Give it a couple more years and I'll think about it.

The biggest problem I have with Apple TV is that Apple doesn't require apps on the platform use its UI and obey its UI conventions.

they need to add all the codecs so we don't have to move to nvidia or infuse when using plex. there's no reason this isn't the player of all players at this cost and processing power.

If they don't change the design from what you own, why would you even feel the need to buy a new Apple TV in the first place? To my knowledge, they don't wear out very fast.

Lots of A/V professionals, of which I am NOT one, recommend using the built-in TV apps anyway. The apps may not get updated as often, but so what? Fewer boxes often mean better performance and less hassle.

The Apple TV 4K had a lot of uses, you don't need to rely on eARC for multi-ch audio. The iTunes 4K bitstream is a higher 32 Mbps peak then the usual 23 Mbps peak with AppleTV Plus app you have on it and other 4K TVs. You can output lossless audio with Apple Music to your AVR setup.

A previous comment in a older thread I made.

It feels like Apple has lost its original vision/purpose for the Apple TV (remaking the remote dozen of times does not mean you know what you're doing). I mean what does Apple want? More people subscribing to AppleTV+? Yet they don't even want to sell a basic AppleTV for $99 (or even $49), making it like they want good margins on the hardware. But ironically they are putting Apple TV app on other platforms like Android TV devices.
Changing the remote means they're trying.

Dozens of times might be an exaggeration since there has only been six different models of devices.
Apple has basically had 3 remotes for the Apple TV (4 if you count going from plastic to metal).

I'm NOT counting the white ring addition! (Which still doesn't get you a dozen.)

Plus, I've bought multiple devices or TVs and remotes always get minor changes from model to model.

I'll also suggest that the pre-app store remotes are very different as the devices are very different.

I would be surprised if a new ATV is released this year, and are Apple going to release a new remote each year?
2021 - new design
2022 - adds U1 chip
2023 - replaces lightning with USB-C

They desperately need a cheaper Apple TV. Just for Apple TV+ and basic Airplay features. Even the current HD version is way too expensive.

Yes they need a stick-like version or something simple for people who don't want to use it for games, just streaming and perhaps something a little more portable for people who travel. I used to use the Roku stick and it was awesome when I was in different hotels all the time.
