If the AppleTV and the AirPortExtreme had a baby, I'd take it in...

Joking aside, I want to be able to put a harddrive to the AppleTV, then those horrible jokes about 16GB ATVs will finally die!

And besides, who would use an AppleTV without also wanting Wifi anyways?

I think the set top TV market is going to get too fragmented.

Want Prime? You'll need Amazon

Want itunes? You'll need AppleTV

Soon we'll have 10 of these little $39-$99 (soon to be +$149) boxes on top of our TVs to get everything we want.

Today: Is show on Netflix ---> watch there because free and no commercials, if not then ----> is show on HBO? - - - > watch there because free and no commercials, if not then ----> is show on Hulu? - - - > watch there because free and limited commercials, if not then - - - - > buy on iTunes (show is usually there). Never check other services because they only cover niche genres.

After Apple Update: Ask Siri. (10% of the time, ask Siri again with clear enunciation to get the name right).

In my world the other streaming services have actually gotten more valuable because there will be less cost to use them. Netflix had very little that I wanted to watch, but I'd still take the time to check it to avoid the $4 to rent from iTunes. All those other channels that I never go to may also become more valuable. I wonder what will turn up on them that I'd never taken the time to check (especially considering how hard it was to use remote to type in a search).

Yeah, but the other ones that are cheaper won't have the App Store and features that this AppleTV will have. I've been waiting for an AppleTV App store for years. It'll be nice to play casual games and use other apps natively only my big screen.
You mean like Roku and Fire TV have now?

I am not sure why everyone wants 4K ATV when there's hardly any content available right now. Hell, most people don't even have a 4K television yet and only a handful of shows are viewable in 4K on Netflix. I doubt they would include 4K in this year ATV.

The AppleTV needs two things I haven't yet heard about. First, it needs an IR blaster so that I can say "Turn on TV to local news" and it happens. Second it needs tight integration to a good speaker so that it can replace my Amazon Echo (which I really like). Those two features with the right software (including Amazon streaming) would make it a candidate to be my central home control and worth more than $199. A non-optical, non-HDMI audio output from the AppleTV would be a tolerable alternative (something I have missed not having on other AppleTVs). If Apple can tie-in nicely with my current Nest products, Wemo, etc. products, then it can win the chance to influence my future buying decisions.

According to Gurman no 4K support and 8/16GB storage.

The current Apple TV design, first released in late 2010, has 8GB of internal storage for caching media, and the fourth-generation boxes in testing surprisingly range from 8GB to 16GB of storage. We are told that Apple has considered two pricing strategies: the simultaneous release of a $149 base model with 8GB of storage alongside a $199 16GB model, or the release of the 16GB Apple TV alone at $149. In either case, Apple will offer a $149 Apple TV.

I think it's more about future proofing the device. There's no real reason an A8 couldn't support it. Hopefully Apple is just waiting for 4K content to be more widely available until they enable it via a software update.

So Amazon Prime Video is coming or does the author not realize that Amazon Prime Video isn't something that is on Apple TV?

This may be a taster device to see how well the Apple TV goes down with app store etc. in tow but I would have loved to have seen an A8X in there with 2GB RAM and starting at 16GB as a minimum to give it some parity with iOS devices. A little disappointing but I'll still be picking one up as I have been wanting an Apple TV with dedicated app store for years.

Don't think about today - think two, three years down the line - The apple TV they release in a week might be what you use for three years. Wasn't it that long ago between releases previously?

and checkout Amazon Prime for a bit of 4K content too. It's coming on rapidly.

all that saidf, I wouldn't be surprised if apple disappoints through - they've do that more and more it seems.

Meanwhile, I actually like windows 10.

My question is where is the 4K content coming from? From what I understand there's very little out there anyway so what's the point? I don't see them wasting their time on this until there's more content and demand.

Well, if iPhone 6S will support 4K video recording that would be a source of content.
What is the point in releasing an iPhone with 4K video if you can't stream them on the TV because Apple TV lacks support for 4K?

What I would like to see in this:
1) Ability to attach a HD (yes, I'm old school and still have some)

2) Decent 'basic' gaming, particularly geared towards fitness with the Watch and/or iPhone. Apple continues to push fitness and I hope they include some games where you have to move around and your Watch communicates with the ATV for the motion (such as old school tennis from Wii - or whoever made that old game).

3) Ability to set up 'dashboards' consisting of RSS sort of feeds. Example: twitter feed in top right corner, Salesforce numbers in a lower right corner, and a ticket feed from a bug tracking system on the left half of the screen. This sort of thing would be extremely useful in a business environment that likes having pointless bling on the walls on a big screen. My office is in the process of putting fives screens on the wall - I'm hoping to find a spare port and plug in my old ATV for HBO in the middle of the day :)

Given that Apple invited 7,000 people to this show and tell, I really hope this one isn't a massive downer like the Apple Music show. Analysts won't like a duplicate of the current ATV with just Siri and a microphone enabled remote thrown in.
