It uses top quality - pro standard components. No way could it be £99. If you want cheap in every way, buy an Amazon device.
It's truly wrong to expect pro level performance for £99.
The amazon device is superior in every way (stated as an Apple consumer) and cheaper. The only place the AppleTV is better is being a HomeKit hub. I was blown away by what the FireTV 4K stick does for the price and I can airplay to it with an add on app

If the "one more thing" announcement is a tracker, it truly will be the most boring keynote EVER!

A12 makes sense if they want to save money and perhaps to reduce the size of Apple TV, removing the fan.
A12X makes sense if they really want to make it a gaming platform.

Neither are necessary for 4K HDR movie playback for 99% of the population. HDMI 2.1 would be a bonus, but unless you have a 2019 LG TV, you're out of luck anyway for now. However, adding HDMI 2.1 would be a good way to future proof yourself, esp. for VRR and eARC support.

There is also this twitter post:

https://twitter.com/never_released/status/1168934759877292034

"There is an Apple A12X refresh called Tinos (t8028/T0), with 4 performance cores and 4 efficiency ones."

However, s/he postulates the A12X refresh is for updated iPad Pros. If so, that would be a first, releasing two generations of iPad Pros with basically the same generation of SoC.

One more thing = Steve Carrell and Reese W. walk onto stage to officially launch AppleTV+ service. This is done with awkward banter and "ironic" jokes. Apple employees planted in first 100 rows fake laugh (also awkwardly).

What could the "one more thing" be? [...] We'll soon find out.

Maybe they've had an epiphany and realized that charging 2x the cost as competitors for products that are the same or not quite as good has gone on for far too long and they're going to align their pricing with the actual value of the products?

The AppleTV is really a fantastic product, however, it *really* needs to be cheaper. Much *much* cheaper. The 4K AppleTV should be no more than £99.

Agreed. The cost of the Apple TV is simply no where near the value it provides.

And the design of the remote horrible. Plus on my remote the Menu button has stopped working properly--requiring multiple presses to register--so I can buy a new remote for close to $100 or just get a Roku for $30. Given that primary use for the device is Netflix and Plex, it's going to be a hard sell to keep an Apple TV if this unit dies.

I was playing with my friend's Note 10+ last night and I was more and more blown away with that phone!

I know. I've been reading and watching reviews; the Note 10+ is simply an amazing device. I recently switched to an iPhone 8 Plus (from a XR) and while I plan to keep it for awhile I don't see myself sticking with iPhone in the future. The cost/value proposition is simply not there. It truly baffles me how Apple has been so stagnant with its development over the last few years--macOS, iOS, iPhones, Macs--most of their products and software have just been leapfrogged by the competition and the competition is charging much less for the same or better hardware.

Curious... which app is that? Anything about it you don't like? I also have a FireTV 4K stick.

If it's not the A12X I am not sure it will be significantly better for gaming. It would presumably run cooler though, maybe removing the need for a fan. Hope they sell a new sane remote separately.

If they're really gonna try another 'one more thing' thing, I expect it's either going to be:

1) a smaller apple pencil, to use with the new phones (as per those sets of rumors) or
2) A cheaper Apple TV, perhaps a dongle style, which might be the apple TV model mentioned in this article, so that they can push the TV streaming service to more people. I suspect it would have limited functionality, compared to the current ATV, so they can keep the current ones as their 'premium' options. The dongle might only have TV/Channels support and do away with full app lineup, for example.

And for the people complaining about the existing remote....

Typically, we don't use the remote. I have my Logitech Harmony setup to control it, and most of the time, just use that. For gaming, the kids use a set of SteelSeries controllers. But we don't use the harmony because the Siri remote sucks, we use it so that there's only ever one remote out on the table, and the rest are tucked away in a drawer. When I do use the Siri remote, like, if the harmony didn't get charged and is currently dead, I've never had a problem with it.

I upgraded to a 4K HDR TV in the past week. It has Roku functionality built in, but I can't seem to access my Apple ecosystem shiz on it so I'm keeping an Apple TV around. Mine is the OG app store model, so a new 4K Apple TV that is way more gaming-capable would definitely entice me.

My guess for the One More Thing™ is Apple-branded over-ear headphones and/or HomePod Mini.
Too bad we won't get a video where Jony Ive rambles on about how the headphones are exclusiviciously and carelovingly laser cut from a single block of 384 carat byzantinium with a circumferancization tolerance of only .00000000000000000001 nanomicroyards.

A10X scores much better than A12 in Geekbench Metal, both in Geekbench 4 and Geekbench 5. However, some gaming benches are faster on A12 than A10X.

But yeah, it seems pointless to go from A10X to A12 just for this reason. If they go with A12, it would be for the reasons we both mentioned or else some other reasons.

There are tons of AppleTV version strings in the betas and even in tvOS release... AppleTV12,1 AppleTV14,1 etc. etc.

Seeing AppleTV11,1 in a plist doesn't mean anything.

Not to mention why would they go from 1,1 -> 2,1 -> 3,1/3,2 -> 5,3 -> 6,2 to suddenly 11?

Except for what it is, it doesn't need "pro standard components". (What are "pro standard components" for a streaming media box, anyway?)

The only reason that makes any sense to have higher-cost components is gaming. And unless Apple is going to make a big serious push in to gaming, I don't see that going any better than it already has.

For media, the existing AppleTV 4K has all the components/power necessary to push the highest quality video any current TV can handle, and those components should be able to be made cheaper now. Maybe if they're going to make an 8K model... But they were late to 1080p, weren't a first-adopter of 4K, I can't see them being the first mover on 8K, either.

And with smart TVs being the standard now, they'd really need a standout feature to drive continued sales. Especially with iTunes and AirPlay integration moving directly in to TVs. I bought an AppleTV 4K before I had a 4K TV just to future-proof. But now that I have a 4K TV, I find I rarely use my AppleTV, since everything I need is built in to the TV's smart TV functionality. (Other than playing iTunes movies or AirPlay streaming, because my TV manufacturer isn't adding those to pre-2019 models.) Pretty much the only time I turn on the AppleTV any more is when I want to mirror my phone screen to the TV for some reason. Which is rarely.

My wife gives me the side eye for getting the Apple TV. We previously had a Roku and a Google dongle and both worked fine. But the Apple TV is kinda buggy and we all know about the remote. Needless to say she absolutely hates the remote. I try to console her by saying she “should have seen the previous one!”
It doesn’t help. But she goes along with it, since we already have it.

Change your life, buy a cheap cover for it so it's easier to hold, and learn how to "tap" the cursor area instead of swiping.

I had to replace my ATV 4k two months ago as it bricked itself on an update and was out of warranty. GRRRRRR..

Well, they went from iPad8,x to iPad11,x. Dunno why... except there are two new iPad lines coming this year... Hmmm... ;)

Are they iPad9,x and iPad10,x?

I understand the Remote and sensitivity of where the cursor lands, but you get use to it pretty quickly. At least for me. It hasn't been a sore spot to me. Maybe because I don't have giant hands? Occasionally I shoot past where I intended when scrolling. But I imagine that could be fixed with sensitivity adjustments? IDK.

I use Apple TV to get iTunes 4K and to get Dolby Atmos from Netflix 4K.

I have the Netflix 4K app on my TV, but I don't get Dolby Atmos over ARC. eARC would solve that problem, but that would require that I buy a new HDMI 2.1 receiver to support eARC, and a new TV as well.

Chances of the MBP 16” being revealed just doubled...

I’m surprised you didn’t mention this possibility in the news, since many rumors seem to point at an early release
