I'm sick of these narcissistic posts where personal preferences are touted as inevitable conclusions of the idiots at Apple design. If you had it your way, Apple would ship us monogrammed 25" MacBook Airs in boxes with black and white cow print. There is a reason why you aren't in charge.

And why are you so keen to replace the optical drive with components Apple charges such a huge premium for (i.e. internal storage)? Even if you don't need it, wouldn't you want the option to chose a less expensive computer with an optical drive?

You could put a better spec'd SSD in it's place and avoid the significant loss replacing the expensively-priced Apple internal storage while having additional flexibility for aftermarket mods.

Optical drives will go when their time is done - why the rush?

Lol man I was just listing what I hope to see. I never said I wanted to be in charge. I understand I have lots of money to spare so I understand my wants are not the same as say a college student.

The suspension in my Ferrari is fairly stiff with the 19/20 hres and my wife plays with the laptop on longer drives where I insist on taking the f430 instead of the cayenne turbo. The last time she tried watching a movie it skipped repeatedly. I haven't used an odd in years and a machine that has NO moving parts appeals to me greatly.

Removing the ODD would allow Apple to better optimize the space inside the MBP for heat, or for graphics, etc.

There is no guarantee that removing the ODD will lead to performance upgrades. How Apple use the space is pure speculation: perhaps it is for the improvements you suggested or maybe the profile will be slimmed a la MBA. Either way, removing the ODD eliminates known possible alterable real estate inside the MBP.

Also, yeah, aftermarket SSDs are faster than Apple's. But you have to consider that Apple's SSDs also have custom firmware optimizations that no other drives have. These optimizations combat SSD degradation, as well as other issues that some drives seem to have. The drives might be slower, but how fast do you REALLY need your drive to be? .

The issue is not Apple SSD vs other SSD or how fast I need my drive to be. The point is why are so many pushing to remove a component many use and those who don't can easily change for the better? It's not as if the prices crashed on retina displays and Apple is still using CRT displays; some people still want the convenience of an internal ODD.

And I also don't buy the idea that removing the ODD will simply allow Apple to offer us 500 GB SSD standard at the same price as last years MBP in an ipad-thin profile that stays cool even on a hot stove.

Simply pushing for a removal of the ODD in all MBP models with SSD standard would very likely:

a) Raise the base price
b) Limit aftermarket upgrades

that's odd, because in my 458 my girlfriend doesn't experience any of the issues you noted. no skipping, no problems. maybe you should get your 430 check out, or better yet, upgrade to a 458. i'm glad i did!

Its sad that you make all that money but you would still charge $500 for delivering Apple goods to a fellow board member on one of your four Caribbean trips as noted in one of your previous posts. *shakes head disapprovingly*

interesting...

Thursday is looking promising, just tried looking up the sku's on the Canadian site but no luck !

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have been able to officially confirm that the new line of Macbook Pros will be *drumroll* ENERGY STAR QUALIFIED!!!!!! I know that some people were very concerned about the possibility that Apple would be leaving this vital feature out, but they may rest easy knowing that the feature will in fact be continued. Now that that is settled, I am sure that the less pressing questions about the new specifications will come to a complete and abrupt halt.

*Raises outstretched hands to the sky, palms up*

Thank the Lord! Okay, now that my questions are answered I can disable this MacRumors account and get back to hosting Jeapordy.

Sorry, I'm a MacRumors n00b. Anyone know from past experience whether these Best Buy prices can be reliable? Or are they just placeholders?

I ask because I have exactly $1099 plus tax saved to buy what I'm hoping is a baseline $1199 13" MBP with the standard $100 educational discount. If for some reason, Apple raises the price of the baseline unit, could they drop the price on the current model? I know it's all speculation but was hoping maybe someone who had witnessed these refreshes before could say what Apple did in the past.

Okay, i've been doing some more research about the timing of information about announcements and the announcement dates themselves. They are as follows:

Back to Mac (Leopard and MBA's) - 7 days
iOS 4 event - 3 days
Apple 'Latest creation' (iPad) - 6 days
Apple iPod refresh 2010 - 6 days

These recent events all indicate that it's perfectly possible for Apple to release info about an event this monday and hold it on thursday or friday. The stars are aligning and it looks like we will indeed see new Macbooks this Thursday.

EXCITED !

I don't know a bout BestBuy prices and the reliability there, but I do know that when Apple has changed prices in the past, they have stayed close to the previous price. My guess? If they do change the prices, it will be +/- $100

thanks for this. brightened my day.

Looks like none of the new MBPs are going to be Energy Star Qualified.

Click on any of the links above and click on "Specifications".

EDIT = Nevermind, I think other than the first link none of the other links have Energy Star Qualified as "Yes". And obviously this is because the new MBPs haven't been released yet, so BB didn't take time to fill out the specs (except may be for the first link).

On a different and scary note, what if Steve Jobs comes out on his birthday and says, "No more MBPs for this year. The last one still works. K thanx bye."

^+1
The suspense is killing me. Actually, I'm sure that someone on here could definitively prove that this "yes/no, will they/won't they" is in fact responsible for actual medical conditions :p

Suspense killing

I must have refreshed this thread 1000s of times in the past week.

I think (hope) that this will launch on Thursday. The evidence is stacking.
