Is it really that tough to pull your phone out of your pocket?

This screams "Solution in search of a a problem"

I have a pebble. There are tons of notifications I get that do not need a response, but I need to read. Being able to have my phone on silent and stay in my pocket is not only easier for me, but I am sure those around me prefer it too :)

Stupid idea.

Just taking something that already exists without changing the core design but trying to fit in new technology to magically work together is wrong.
That’s the reason why taking Symbian phones in 2006 and slaping a touch screen on it, without adjusting the core system in a major way, didn’t work.

Especially the buttons on the side look pathetic. It’s just like the fake-leather calendar design of the former Mac App, with the bookmark symbol acting as a button that has completely different functionality than what it suggests.

Exactly. A Smartwatch can never work in the confined space of a traditional watch. This round design just says "I am a standard watch and I can tell time". Apple's design will say "I am from the future, this is how a watch looks and works now". And everybody will go "I need this!".

My current bet is on the already known Apple patent with continuous flexible display wrapped around your wrist with vertical, revolving UI controlled by swiping up and down. Only this could make the apps stand out and work and make the product futuristic and desirable. Remember, it's all about the apps. If they cannot sing, it's just a dead box. Also think of the skin customization. Kids will use Disney skins, girls can make it into a pink bracelet, other can view their bio data, control music, etc. A very inclusive product for everyone. I think the word "watch" restricts everyone in their imagination. My money is more on an "iBracelet".

It's quite exciting, 2014 will be like 2007 all over again. Just wait and see.

You miss the point that this first and foremost HAS to pass muster as a fashion item. Sorry geeks, but if this has every great feature on everyone's dream list, but looks like ass, it will fail. On the other hand, if it only does 2 or 3 things really well AND looks amazing, (but is capable of growing in functionality) it could be a hit.
The iPhone was really short of features when it launched, but did what it did well and looked cool.

But I REALLY hope they go with round. I've never seen a square watch that anyone with any self respect would wear in public.

Introducing an iWatch with a sheer number of functions that pretends to be a normal watch by imitating common design language is ridiculous. Do you really think Apple would like that no one can see that they have the new must-have product but a standard unspecial watch? (and no, I am not talking of making it stand out of the crowd by looking like a nerd gadget. just Apple's usual beautiful understatement.)

uh

the only recognizable achievement in these mocks is that circle with the 7 in it matches up so well with the angle of the watch face

Yeah... make sure you eliminate 50+% of the buying public by making it look like the wrist communicator from the Predator. :D

I think you eliminate 50% of the public by having such an effeminate watch, lol. No seriously, I'm just kidding, kind of. Although I don't mean any disrespect, I know some guys like those thin little watches. I don't like a huge watch either though, but that looks is just too girly looking for me.

I don't get people who say this. Yes, sometimes it really is that tough to pull my phone out of my pocket. How about when it's in my jeans pocket and I'm driving down the highway? Sure I can unbuckle my seat belt, shift over to one side, plunge my hands down my pocket, pull my phone out, press the power button then enter in my lock code. Or I could just slightly twist the wrist I have safely on the steering wheel and see what popped up or who is calling.

I definitely want a smartwatch, I just don't think anyone has made one worth putting on yet.

Yes, all this round design is like coming with a faster horse instead of inventing the car. Be prepared - the design will be radical, futuristic and so desirable that it will turn all standard watches into vinyl record players. They will still have their old classic charm but they will be so last century.

Remember - Apple will not improve the current watch by just adding few new functions, they will totally reinvent the product, just like they did with the iPhone.

Most females carry their phones in their bags and if its anything like my wife it takes here ages to get her phone out of that tardis of a bag.

There are many situations where I love having my pebble and can't take my phone out of my pocket or that its not in my pocket:
In the shower/bath
at the beach
when hands are mucky from working
when at the cinema
when in a meeting
when seated - those damn jean pockets
when I can't remember what the name of a song playing is

Geez. These highly unprofessional mockups that its authors saw in their wet dreams are annoying. Who cares how a completely random person imagines iWatch or any other Apple product? I want rumors not wet dreams!

During the iPad Keynote they focused a ton of time on iBooks and the iBookstore.

Oh yeah, I remember that now. As far as I know nobody I know with an iPad has read a book on their iPad. Apple may have intended for that to be the killer app, but that certainly isn't what people bought it for.

And why would you? It's like paying $400 for a membership to B&N, where membership grants you the ability to buy their overpriced books.

Apple needs to find a solution to getting my wallet out of jeans rather than my slim iPhone. Seriously, pockets seem to keep getting smaller and smaller.

Solution: fix passbook.

From what we've heard on the rumour mill so far the iWatch seems likely to be little more than a remote sensor worn on the wrist. I think it will have a very simple UI enabling you to do simple but useful tasks without having to take your iPhone out of your pocket like see who's calling, change the song playing, remind you about upcoming meetings, give live directions as you walk, heart rate monitor, pedometer, warn you if it's about to rain, etc. Useful stuff that developers could add to their existing iPhone apps.

The current smartwatch is like the mobile phone of old. The small display area allows for only basic functions like displaying simple text and numbers-based information. If you want proper apps, you need to "iPhonize" the product, i.e. add a larger screen and simple UI. The only way to enlarge the display on your wrist is to use a flexible display and wrap it around your wrist.

This naturally calls for a vertical GUI (similar to how you set time on your iPhone) and at the same time makes the product incredibly futuristic - suddenly you have an interactive bracelet! Johny will make it irresistibly fashionable and its interactive nature will support skin downloads. Want a flashing band for a night out? Or you prefer a support Africa theme? Add health, fitness, ipod, payments - all that makes sense on your wrist. Add an app ecosystem. You have a major hit.

Now the only question remains - is the technology there yet?

I don't know. Everyone I know has read a book on their ipad.

I suspect the focus was to just get the bookstore out there and more importantly how it would look to the education market.

Horrible idea, it better be more "band" like and not a "watch" like device. There is a huge luxury watch market it the world; Apple would not expect these people to put down a Rolex, Brietling, Hublot, etc in exchange for a computer watch. The Nike fuelband should be the start of the design process. Theis better be the reason why Apple hired the man that was responsible for the fuel band.

Also what female is gonna put that thing on their wrist.

A design student's concept is front page news?!

This is actually interesting and original content. So we should only expect the likes of 'Apple Releases Revamped iTunes Festival App' and the 100th iteration of the US smartphone market share data as worthy of the hallowed MacRumors front page?

Really? I think it's a great idea to try and invisage what wearable tech that is actually wearable could look like. This is the closest idea of a smart watch I would actually wear - it looks classical and not like some metal bracelet that looks like a Nike FuelBand. Even if you don't like the concept, retorting to calling it 'stupid' is a little childish.

And I just love how these are the other top comments, surely representative of the intelligent and forward thinking Apple user base of MR:

That's what I'm talking about. A modular design that goes into several different housings. I have several watches and I like mixing it up depending on the formality of the occasion and what I'm wearing...

And just for the record, I also use the WWE app on my AppleTV. I say that because so few of you thought Apple buyers would want that app. Well, I do and I'm also gainfully employed. It's a big world and there's an infinite amount of different personal tastes and preferences. I think this has to be modular to make it big, one of the iPhone's strengths with the fashionista crowd is that there's barely anything to it but the bare minimum required to make it functional. It allows you to customize it as you see fit with cases and sleeves if you opt to.

I don't want some black bracelet sci-fi movie looking thing on my wrist everyday. To me it's garish and ugly, I think a lot of potential customers would agree. The way they are ramping up they are expecting on casting a very big net. Those narrow bracelets don't fit that bill IMHO.

I wouldn't want to wear one of those flexible screen bands... Well, at least the mock ups I've seen thus far. And they're less female-friendly than the circular screen design.

The idea that they would forgo a speaker to save space and energy sounds like bull. A rotating motor with weight would take up more space. I find it hard to believe spinning a weight around would use less energy than a speaker beeping. My citizen watch has a low power (bad sound quality) speaker for the alarm and I haven't changed it's little battery in 3 years.
Apple might choose to go with a vibration for the sake of creating a new experience but not for space and power savings.

I also think the home screen redesign will be the most interesting change. I'm imagining a dial appearance like the old rotary phones. Except in place of finger holes there will be app icons to tap. The time will probably be in the middle with a background behind it.

This looks atrocious.

The site is named MacRumors, not MacMockups.

Think about what you said said.

You're on a site about rumors. Thus people discuss, talk, and speculate about future products. This speculation may involve mock ups. We've seen it many times before.

So build a bridge and get over it.

No MacRumors is a fine place. It's some of the users who are, ummm 'off.'

Yeah... seriously... WTF?

For real. I am appalled by this. How could they do such I think. I mean I come here by choice - oh wait nevermind nobody forced me to come here and read the article. I'm just talking non sense.

Hopefully it doesn't use the same display tech as the Motorola Aura did... That thing was freakishly expensive just because of the display.
