iPhone X
iPhone X Plus
iPhone X Edition

next year X2, then X3, then X4...

Could be a cool way to reset the naming system!

It could be iPhone X but there will be no iPhone "Edition" model. There is already an iPhone SE and whatever the next flagship is named it has to be perceived as being the best. If it's "Edition" that is lower in rank than "SE." (Apple has said the SE stands for Special Edition).

I have to disagree with this naming system for the iPhone. And the term "Pro" is not fitting for an iPhone at all. There isn't anything Pro about an iPhone that makes and receives calls. The numeric system will continue in all likeliness, But the moniker "Pro" doesn't apply to an iPhone.

I amended my post after thinking about it

iPhone X should be the new name for all 3 handsets, in standard, Plus and Edition (bezel-less). X for 10 year anniversary. All three with glass backs and wireless charging. Edition with no bezels and 3D sensing camera etc.

Few people know SE stands for Special Edition.

I could see iPhone X Edition being the name of the premium handset. The others will be the X and the X Plus. All glass-bodied, all supporting wireless charging, but with Edition featuring the bezel-less design.

Edition, as with the Watch, infers a premium quality. With the phone this means you lose the bezels. And you pay for the premium!

Enough with the numbers. I think they’ll fall in line with the iPads: iPhone (7S/+) and iPhone Pro (8). You can’t really do “Edition” because the SE.

That being said...who wants a 7S?? Fine for a mid-tier but it seems weird to have a 4.7/+ version and then 8 only in one size? And then what, releasing the Special Edition upgrade next year??

How does it apply to the iPad? The MacBook? When will the numbers be dropped then? iPhone 9, 10, 11? That starts to get out of hand.

I still don't understand what's the point of the 7s altogether instead of going full-on 8. Mostly same form factor since the iPhone 6 and way behind Samsung (and others) infinity screen game.

You're not understanding. The moniker or term "Pro" applies to an iPad Pro or MacBook Pro, those are devices that are meant to accomplish productivity tasks and or other work related programs. There is nothing "Pro" about an iPhone that makes and receives phone calls/notifications, it's a commodity device updated annually. The numbering system will be left up to Apple and how they continue to evolve or some other clever marketing term to follow.

Few people know SE stands for Special Edition.

I'd bet more than a few people understand SE stands for Special Edition. It's been used in marketing for decades. Regardless, Apple knows and has publicly stated it stands for SE so it would only take one (tech) journalist to write a head line that Apple has named it's new phone with a lower ranking name than it's 4", less technological, model. Not the buzz Apple is looking for.

It's a completely different situation with the AW as there is not and never has been a SE model. If there was I'm sure it would be more limited and exclusive than the Edition.

A lot of iPhone SE users believed that the "SE" represented for 'Steve Edition. 'That wasn't true. Phil Schiller stated it was indeed labeled "Special Edition."

Surely by that logic the iPhone SE would have been considered “better” than the 6S it sat alongside at the time, by virtue of being “special”?

Your idea that an “iPhone X Edition” would somehow be, as you put it, “lower in rank” than iPhone SE is ludicrous in my humble opinion.

With iOS 11 all the iPads will essentially have a similar productivity effort. The Pro supports Apple Pencil and other than the size of the device and internal upgrades, it’ll be the same as the iPad. Also, the iPad has been upgraded every year for the most part.

So if we’re to believe all the facial recognition, 4K video capabilities, etc. of the 8 (that won’t be given to the other models presumably) it seems it could be more work related for photographers, etc. I guess I’m looking at it from a marketing aspect where it would fall in line with their other devices and just take on the names (Pro/Mini/Air) like when they announced “the new iPad” and finally dropped the numbers.

I have an iPhone 7 plus, so I would like the newest phone but which one is bigger in terms of screen size ???? it almost seems like as if the iPhone 8 is smaller

Again, you'r off base here with me. I'm stating the MacBook Pro an iPad Pro are devices that are meant to be fluent with productivity and work development. The iPhone was never intended to be competing with desktop programs, coding for developers, extensive video/photo editing, rendering, etc. There is nothing "Pro" about an iPhone in terms of workclass development and productivity for certain Fields, as those devices are.

And as far as the numbering system goes with iPhone, I believe it will continue with numeric system and or perhaps with the OLED model, some clever marketing term to create a separation.

If these are true, then who will buy 7s and 7s Plus?
They pretty much look identical to 7 and 7 Plus..

They will have very different internals. They are a very tiny bit thinner, have a glass back, and a Stainless Steel Frame. Apple will be cranking the 7s+ out the door. The 8 will be a "Special Edition" type product for those willing to pay the premium for being first. The VAST majority of Q1 and Q2 sales will be the 7s and 7s+. IMO, many are going to sit back and evaluate the new ID System on the 8. If it works then you'll see an increase in 8 sales by Q3 2018 if supply allows. Personally, I'm just not feeling secure about the 8 and Facial Recognition until I 'See it' functioning in the Wild for a while. :apple:

They'll become the mid-tier range. Late adopters, people on a budget, parents buying for kids. Plenty of markets for them, businesses that supply employees phones. Not everyone needs or wants the latest and greatest. Those of us here are not market indicators.

People on a budget buy last year's model.

I like Grubers comment:

"These phones are sporting entire new designs. If these [claims] are legit, there’s no way Apple is going to call these devices “7S”. I suspect Apple will use one of these sets of names:
  • iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 8 Pro; or
  • iPhone, iPhone Plus, iPhone Pro
Either of these naming schemes would make all three new iPhones sound new."

I could agree, however IMO, we are still a little bit away from removing iPhone numbers. It will happen eventually. :apple:

So if wireless charging is in all 3 models, and the 7s gets new frame and body materials; why the rush to pull the headphone jack last year? I personally would have liked the 7+ body, camera, and screen but with a 3.5mm jack. They could've save the removal for this year with everything else. Would have made more sense.

No because the SE was a 4" that came out of the blue and Apple made no commitment to keep it as a permeant part of the iPhone like like the standard iPhone 6, 6s, 7, 7s rotation.

My idea that Edition ranks lower than Special Edition can be ludicrous in you humble option. It's your humble opinion. But Apple is savvier than you and I'm just relaying that I sincerely doubt they are going to cloud its message by selling an "Edition" phone and a "Special Edition" phone. Maybe if they discontinue and pull the SE before this falls announcement, but only if.

That's what they do not. But people on a budget that Apple want's to upsell to buy the next leg up OR Apple stops selling last year's model and there is only the 7s, 7s Plus, and whatever the new phone is called. Either way there is a demographic to buy the 7s and 7s Plus. Not everyone is going to want or can afford the new "it" model.

If the rumors are true, this will be the first iPhone I don't pre-order. I don't want to buy a 7s+ when the 8 is out, but I'm not going to pay some huge premium. TouchID also works so well, that I'm skeptical about facial recognition. I have used Androids facial unlock before and I did not like it at all.
