its turning into an android spec race phone, with iOS installed.

say what you want about iphones circa 2008-2011 'lagging' in specs, features etc relative to their android counterparts... those phones had sex appeal to them.

this just looks and feels like a nerd's toy. 'edge to edge display'. big deal.

this is why ipad pros suck. 'keyboard cover'...stylus...big deal. it sucks.
sure, theyre technical marvels....but who actually wants one?

I'll need a new phone this fall. I'll get whatever iOS phone is $600.

Calm yourself...

Not the same... does this have glass front and back with metal frame? Does this have equal-size bezels all around with unique cut out on top? Is this the same size, same camera solution, same speaker design? As far as these kinds of phones go, they both have large screens in common and not much else.

Seem like excuses to me. Also, the point of the pictures are to show that it won't necessarily blend to the point where it will be impossible to tell there's a bezel whatsoever. Symmetry will be contrived.
At least you could understand his/her gibberish. I have no idea what the hell s/he is talking about.

Good God that camera hump is flipping awful!! Looks tacky and stuck on.....
I hate to admit it, but I'm also disliking that hump more and more. It really detracts from an otherwise unblemished appearance. Would be so nice if Apple could get rid of it with this OLED, all new 'premium' design, or at least minimize it.

I realize it's the size of the camera(s), the laws of physics, but that fact makes it no less unattractive and a compromise so un-Apple-like.

Tim cook on September iphone 8 event " today we are taking the iphone to the next level. making huge leap"

Tim cook "biggest thing to happen to iphone since iphone"

Phil schiller "What makes iPhone 8 so unique is how it feels in your hand. The materials… the remarkable precision. Never before have we built a product with this extraordinarily level of fit and finish.”

Phil schiller " its the fastest and most advanced iphone that we made".

So predictable guys. Do something else
Let's go for something less predictable then.

How about:

Tim Cook: "we're taking the iPhone to a previous level"

Phil Schiller "Never before have we built a product with such a poor level of finish and imprecision"

"This is the slowest and least advanced iPhone ever made"

What would you rather they say?

I still really like this:

iphone-8-concept.png

I was never a fan of the rounded sides, that isn't making is much nicer for me to hold compared to an SE, but it makes it more slippery in my hands.

Back when steve came out and everyones lives stopped for 2 hours. People just stared with amazement. Steves gone, and the Apple decline has been in action for several years now.

There is no wow. But customers (especially seasoned ones like us) believe there will be a wow factor. They expect it. Problem is, people love PHONES. Unless there can be a practical replacement for the phone (cleverly implemented VR?) people will be bored with phones. Its hit a plateau in adverse development. First company which can substancial improve and move past the classic mobile phone will be king. Mark my words
I'm intruiged by this notion that Apple has declined since Steve's passing. Sales of phones and laptops have increased dramatically; the share price has gone through the roof; almost every metric has carried on improving except perception.

Phones are stagnating a little; you can only design a rectangular bit of metal and glass in so many ways; the biggest advances will now be in software and capabilities. AR kit is a perfect example.

And how would a VR phone work exactly?

Looks great! It does look kind of chunky though.

Especially with iPhone 6 being 6.9mm, and 6S being 7.1mm. This one being 7.5mm...
The clunky comes from the poor computer imaging. He didn't design this well. It looks as if there's a case on it that has lips around the screen.

I don't mark random people's words. Especially when they have no backing behind their insane idea.

Mobile phone market is saturated. That's why nobody is really innovating.

10 million people bought windows tablet pc edition too
[doublepost=1498715493][/doublepost]

So you're saying ipad, which has sold 360 million since it's first release sucks but windows tablet, which has sold 10 million, doesn't?
I think you're hanging out in wrong forums

Actually whilst I've been a little down on Apple in recent years, I've considered an iPad Pro for trying to get into some basic art / design work. I considered a Surface Pro but they're equally pricey and there's some decent apps available for iPad for not much money... problem is I'd quite like an extended 'try before I buy' but no real way of doing that. Bit of a dilemma to be honest.

I wish people would stop saying it'll have a screen similar in size to the plus models. If its stretched into an 18:9 ratio then the diagonal measurement might be similar but it'll still be narrower. I moved from 6S plus to 6S while waiting for the 8, and it feels too narrow for me when reading websites etc in portrait mode. I can't see the 8 being much better (apart from less scrolling due to the longer screen)

Don't you maybe think they would do that, if they could shrink the sensor packages at the top of the front of the phone down small enough to do that? You know Apple has like patents and **** on how to embed the camera into the screen itself, like the fingerprint scanner? They are working up to it, but basic engineering limitations don't just let them make an arbitrary decision like that. I mean the perfect execution of any smartphone would be an edge-to-edge display, or close to, that has no visible sensors anywhere. But it's the same reason there's a bulge on the back -- it's an exceptionally sophisticated sensor package they have to cram into there, with its own engineering limitations for how deep it needs to be, and that's just how it is. They could either reduce the bulge by increasing the entire depth of the device (giving us better battery life), or have a bulge but thinner phone, with not as good battery life. Apple has consistently chosen the latter for a long time now, so why would you be surprised at this point? I just hope that hump contains a 3D environmental scanning system.

Hence why I literally asked "I wonder why they didn't (or couldn't)"

Jeez, what's with the snarky response? I wasn't complaining about it, I was asking why it wasn't/couldn't be done. I know there are limitations and other factors to consider.

The only thing you need to know is that the display and cutout will be indistinguishable most of the time.
[doublepost=1498704034][/doublepost]
I agree. They seem upset that they have no concept how the device will actually look when it's on.
[doublepost=1498704520][/doublepost]
Here, this is what I believe the device will actually functional like:

Everything above and below the white lines—in pink—will be black areas. These areas will function very much the same as the Touchbar on the MacBook Pro in that, they will be mostly turned off pixels with some info inside the areas, shrouded in black off pixels to allow them to seamlessly blend into the bezels, specifically the top cutout.

I'm dreading this is true, but I hope they don't go down this route. I don't want 'more screen' only to find it reserved by the system and I actually have 'less screen' or the same screen. If you're going to innovate on hardware, let me use it.

I agree, if they go with this it's essentially just keeping the iphone 6 design, which was boring from the beginning.

But, if you look at Apple designs since the iPhone 4, they've all sort of been duds if you ask me.

I actually think it looks very nice, and I don't like the Samsung design at all (the different curves just look totally wrong to me). However, I agree that being edge to edge gives the Samsung a wow factor that the iPhone lacks (even if I don't see a practical use for those curved edge bits of display).

On the flip side you get comment after comment on this very forum where people want a thicker phone - so it'll have a bigger battery and some because they want it to hide the camera bump.

0.4 mm is barely noticeable IMO, and I for one will be glad to have more battery.

I remember when I was growing up (many decades ago) the same thing happened to me. I realised all these things are tools to accomplish a job. So well done, you can now look at your devices objectively and buy what you need. Rather than focusing on silly stuff like "sex appeal", it's a smartphone not a Playboy centrefold.

As an iPhone 6 owner I'm excited. Looking forward to better camera (especially optical zoom), taptic engine, less bezel/more screen real estate, water resistance, dual speakers, faster Touch ID, better responsiveness and power (especially for all the on device processing - like object recognistion), better battery life etc. etc. Also I'm hoping for some ARKit improvements thank to the dual camera setup.

I'm also one that wants (and has) an iPad. The iPad Pro is the biggest change to my working life since the introduction of the smartphones (Palm, Blackberry type email capable devices many moons ago - which allowed so much more freedom for office workers). I now take all my notes on my iPad. It's great having every single meeting note, scribble etc. with me at all times. Also means I don't need to go through reams of notepads as I did previously. Oh and they're all searchable. Plus with the cloud, when I'm back at my desk it's all sync'd to my ThinkPad. Perfect.

After 2 minutes of that music, I wanted to shove two pencils in my ears right to my brain.

I guess I am an old man now.

Haha, normally that's me. I actually didn't mind this one.

That's 3 minutes and 58 seconds I will never get back.

I have to wonder what kind of person watches the whole thing? Surely you realised after 10 seconds you'd seen it all. The video scrubber is your friend.

Sooo identical to the i7 plus except with vertical camera and less bezels... brilliant. way to keep pushing the ball forward

Yep, I love Apple's design philosophy. No need to reinvent the wheel. It's a great design IMO and these tweaks look fantastic. Shame you don't agree but I've learnt over the years there's always a section of users who will be unhappy (look at the top reply in this post of mine - some want thicker devices/others want thin). The one thing I would like to see a return of is flat sides (better when using the camera, and helps grip), but can see why they go with rounded, it's a better in hand feel.

Also, different wouldn't automatically mean "pushing the ball forward".

Every time one of these "dummy" phones come out before the launch... Tim Cook walks out expecting to surprise us with nothing more than exactly what we have already seen for months. I can't wait for it to happen yet again. There is literally zero surprise and delight anymore.

If I showed this video to my partner they'd be completely surprised. Not everyone follows the tech blogs like us.

Good God that camera hump is flipping awful!! Looks tacky and stuck on...

I hate to say it, but design wise in this shiny form, the Galaxy S8 looks better!!

Having tried the S8 it's not for me. As a person with an office job it only took 1 hour for me to realise that the fingerprint scanner on the back is very annoying as my phone lies on my desk most of the time next to my mouse. So design wise for me the S8 was a huge fail. Doesn't look likely, but if Apple follow suit I think I'll be upgrading my 6 to 7 until they manage to embed it into the screen.

Also why do you "hate to say it"? It's your opinion, own it.

My eyes and hands say a bigger screen in pretty much the same footprint as the 4.7" is a very big deal.

I have the 6, and was going to upgrade to the 7 Plus last year but held off. Hopefully these rumours pan out - having the bigger screen in a similar sized body is a big positive for me (along with the all the other improvements the 6s, 7 and no doubt "8" will introduce).

Camera bump or thicker phone. People while whine about either one. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Doesn't bother me any.

Well, their are camera bumps, and then there is Apples camera bump.... It's an awful design and their really is no excuse for Apple if this is what they do.
Everyone else has gone thicker by the way, they get bigger batteries as a result too. I think 1mm is not a massive ask, do you?

Do they sit around every year thinking of new ways to make the camera even uglier? :p

hehe.. I'm pretty sure this cam is for 3d/AR.. Good cams bulge, thats life :) samsung, and everyone else, is in the same boat

Although, these leaks or renders at least give us more insight of what we could expect as we get closer to the iPhone launch in September. As of now, it appears more that the home button will be embedded in the display, vertical camera and perhaps a cut out at the top of the iPhone. But nonetheless, it's all detective work to see what fits and what doesn't. I can appreciate these leaks, if its legitimate or not, as things tend to intensify with rumors as we approach closer September.
It's not a leak, it's a work of fiction and wishful thinking.
